I was kicked off the Bear Bench.
It was a wintery day in Green Bay in 1951 and the game was being played at the County Fair Grounds. A group of us drove 18 miles or so from our school in Appleton, Wisconsin, to the game. We were able to get in through holes in the fence. My roommate, who was with us, was a nephew of George Halas, the coach/owner of the Bears. As such my roommate got us seats on the Bear Bench. Some of our group was from Wisconsin and Halas caught them cheering for Green Bay. He immediately motioned to an assistant to get us out of there, including his nephew.

LOL @ Ruby, a new spin on an old joke...there's only one flaw in it though, Peyton IS god

Great story, NS.

So you have a team with a really good defense that's being told for two weeks they can't win...hmmm.

Should be a good game....if you like defense.

bears defense is slightly undermanned now that they lost one of their best guys

colts defense is much improved now that theyve got sanders back, and their offense is much improved now that clark is back

of the 4 games they lost, clark did not play in 3, and i believe sanders missed all of them

this colts fan likes defense

I like your story, NS.

While I posted Bears jokes, the truth of the matter is that I like both teams and have been following both of them all season. So I am going to be both happy and disappointed no matter what the outcome of this game.

I think this is going to be a great game. I'm not a big fan of either team but I can begrudgingly admit I do love watching a QB like Manning run an offense. there are few QBs like him playing. He's a QB with a coach's smarts. The two teams seem to be evenly matched so it'll be good.

maybe this is just my hopes talkin, but i really look for the colts to just destroy the bears...peyton's finally found his post season grove and i think if they go up big, early grosman won't be able to hand the pressure and start making mistakes

i agree though, it is very exciting to see these two teams go up against each other...maybe it's just locally but this seems to me the most popular superbowl in recent memory...i heard on the radio yesterday they broke the record for the two closest(geographically) teams to play each other...they only broke the record held by baltimore/NY Jets by a couple miles

If the Colts win will they dedicate their win to Barboro because he's a horse and the Colts are horses?

hey scrotchy have you heard the rumor? mcnabb to the lions for their first-round pick so they can pick up brady quinn. personally, i wouldnt do it. mcnabb is a proven quality qb (rush limbaugh be damned), and quinn is an unknown. if they were rebuilding, that would be a different story. but, theyre not

Too bad Bears fans, defense wins championships, but you've got Rex Grossman for a QB. No defense for that.

Oh, come on people. It's the day after the Superbowl, why was this thread at the bottom of the page?

It hadn't even been 10 hours since the confetti flew in Miami before the "experts" were asking the question, "Does Peyton Manning have to win 2 Superbowls to secure his legacy?"

Immediately after that the Colts quickly petitioned the NFL to hold Superbowl 42 on Lake Superior. The theory being that if Peyton can win the Superbowl WHILE actually walking on water, maybe his critics will be satisfied. I'm thinking probably not.

"SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer was fired Monday night in a shocking move by team president Dean Spanos, who cited a "dysfunctional situation" between the coach and general manager A.J. Smith.

Less than a month after San Diego's NFL-best 14-2 season was wrecked in a home playoff loss to New England, Spanos cited the exodus of both coordinators and other assistants in firing Schottenheimer. The coach had a year left on his contract and will be owed more than $3 million."

Wow, what have you done lately for us, Marty?

Weird that AP calls it a shocking move. People have been predicting it for some time because of frictions with the owner and GM. Schottenheimer also has a history of losing play off games.

Pittsburgh Steelers scout Mark DeWitt says he repeatedly caught members of the Detroit Lions scouting staff looking over his shoulder during the NFL scouting combine.

"It was really annoying and obviously quite unprofessional," said DeWitt. "I understand why they're doing it -- after all of the duds they've drafted under Matt Millen's tenure, they figure they'd be better off copying the evaluations of successful franchises -- but it's completely unethical."

Lions scout Charlie Green admitted to copying DeWitt's notes, and says he did the same to scouts from the Patriots, Colts and Ravens.

"I learned a lot, too," said Green. "For one, none of them had Troy Smith ranked as the No. 1 quarterback like we do -- which is kind of weird. I mean, he did win the Heisman Trophy. And the other thing is that no one else had Reggie Bush ranked as the No. 1 overall prospect. Turns out he was in last year's draft."

How sad is that!

Falcons' Vick indicted in dogfighting probe
RICHMOND, Va. - Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury on charges related to illegal dogfighting.

Vick and three others are charged with competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting and conducting the enterprise across state lines.

The dogfighting operation was named “Bad Newz Kennels,” according to the indictment, and the dogs were housed, trained and fought at a Surry County, Va., property owned by Vick.

If they charged him with "illegal dog fighting", does that mean certain types are legal?

If he is guilty put him under the Jail. Michael is a good ball player but he is nothing but trouble and I think (Auther Blanks owner of the Falcons) got out his check book and paid the accusers off
