I'd appreciate . . .
some prayers or good vibes sent my little sister's way. Some of you might have caught a few posts about her being pregnant w/ twins. Well, this wkend she was put in the hospital for pre-term labor. They started her on a high dose of magnesium sulfate to stop it, but so far it is only working off and on. The babies are only at 30 wks., and we are told that they would need breathing tubes and feeding tubes and at least a month stay in the neonatal intensive care unit if they were born now. My sister has been given steriod shots to develop their lungs though, just in case they can not stop it. To top all of this off, she began having grand mal seizures last night, which the dr. believes were brought on by high stress, lack of sleep, medication, and the extremeness of her physical discomfort at the moment. She has alot of pressure through out her stomach and one of the babies has actually moved into the birth canal, increasing the pressure. Anyway, I believe in the power of prayers and good vibes and I would appreciate it.

Both prayers and vibes.

We have twins, we had early labor an dwent through some of the same stuff (just not the seizures) but I understand most of what you described. Does she live near you, where you can go and be a support to her?

Thanks everybody! I really appreciate this. She's in a very good hospital, w/ a NICU right there, so that is good. It's 50 miles away, but we are taking rotations staying w/ her during the day and at night. Her husband is obviously about to lose it, so we've encouraged him to go home and get rest a few nights. I stayed w/ her Fri. night.

I guess I should clarify too. She had eplisepsy as a teen, but it had been so long since she had a seizure that about 2 yrs. ago her neurologist decided that she had prolly out grown them (which does occur). The seizures then were often linked to high stress and little rest, so I guess there just hasn't been a situation like that in so long and that is why we thought she had outgrown it. This sit. is just the right combo. to bring it back, I suppose.

Fritz, did your babies have to stay in the neonatal? Did they have any complications? How long were they able to keep delivery from occuring? Did your wife also get magnesium sulfate and if so, was it pretty costic going into the vein? My sister says it is quite painful and making her arm burn. Sorry about all the questions, I'm just trying to get lots of info. I'm one of those types that feels better when I know all that I can know about a particular sit.

Prowler, my sis had been on bed rest for 2 months leading up to this hospitalization. This preg. has pretty much been hell for her. My mom and I are kinda' worried that this could lead into a pretty serious postpartum depression. Fritz or Prowler, did your wives experience any postpartum depression after bed rest, hospitalization, and the stress of worrying over the health of the babies?

She'll be alright newgirl, so will the twins. Called positive thinking, and it works. (Religious types call it prayer.) Post some pics of them clones later.

Newgirl: Make sure you talk to the doctor. Thoroughly. Some doctors are bad at speaking with their patients and sometimes you need to force the conversation. Make sure they give you time and speak with you about all the procedures, what they mean, why they have the effect they do, other options, etc. Some doctors are great about interacting with the relatives of patients while others are very stand-offish.

Mag Sulfate - she had some problem with that, I'm not sure I can recall exactly because it was 10 years ago. I think it made her heart race? Whatever it was, she had one rough night then swore she'd never take the stuff again.

She was hospitalized for 10 days at one point, then had 4 weeks of bedrest at home. The goal was, make it to 36 weeks, one month shy of the due date but generally considered the earliest they would allow labor to continue without at least trying to stop it. They did give her some steroid to try to accelerate lung development of the babies. Right at 36 weeks, she started having serious contractions and the boys were delivered by C-Section. They were already 6.2 and 6.10 at that point, would have been a lot of pounds of babies if they had gone another month! Evan went to NICU right away because his lungs just weren't ready. Erik, they detected some kind of infection and put him into NICU the next day. Erik was home at 5 days, and Evan was home in 7 days, if I remember right.

No post-partum depression.

Aside from the seizures I think (though I am not a medical professional) what your sister is going through is very common. She should get through it fine, and it won't be long before she and her partner are looking back on this time and saying that it was rough but it was all worth it.

Oh, about complications. Both boys had asthma problems that were most likely a result of being born early. We had to do breathing treatments (nebulizer) on them both every four hours for the first 18 months or so. That was a lot of work and a lot of time but a small price to pay.

Thanks so much everyone.

Fritz, right now their goal is to get her to 32 wks., but I just can't imagine they can get her through 1 more wk. And yes, the Mag. makes her heart race. She says it makes her very hot and unable to focus too. The dr. thinks the babies are ea. at about 3 lbs. I find it unbelievable that they are able to keep holding delivery off. She told me at about 2 AM on Fri. night (I guess that is Sat. AM), that she felt the urge to bear down (all the women w/ kids will know what I am explaining here). It is amazing to me that she can be that progressed and they can still stop it.

Rosey, thankfully they (her OB, her neurologist, they called him in this AM, the neonatal doc. and the nursing staff) are all communicating really well w/ her husband and our parents. So far they have been very frank and forward and compassionate.

We have our whole hometown, all of both families, and now TTers from all over the country praying. I believe in the power of that and hope that things will turn for the better soon. Thanks again.

Newgirl,

my prayers are with your sister and the twins,

We're going through a similar thing now too, I've got a cousin with a son born on September 12th at 26 weeks, he weighed 1 lb 12oz at birth. Here's the note from my aunt:

Yesterday September 24 I saw Brandon at the hospital. He is so small but perfect. (Looks just like any newborn). Little head about the size of a hard baseball. He was laid on his stomach and was able to get his legs under him and move his body (about 7 inches long) and legs around. Has his mother's blond hair all over his body. Like a little newborn kitten his eyes are not yet opened. This should happen in the next couple of weeks.

While he is fragile he now weighs 2# 1/2oz. They have had to give him blood several times and antibiotics. Also morphine to keep his calm and sleepy. This saves energy in his tiny body.

Was able to put my hand into the incubator and touch him. He still needs lots of prayers but at this time things are looking good.

My older brother and I were both born Very prematurely, and each of us spent a lot of time in incubators. That was 27 years ago for me, 29 for him, and I'm sure they've come a long way with all kinds of technology to deal with the situation since then. Best Wishes to all of you.

As a seed lay restless on the blistered ground;
The wind picked it up and blew it around.
It was left in a meadow of morning dew;
What was its fate nobody knew.
The wind grew worse and began to gust;
the tiny seed was covered in dust.
The seed lay desperate waiting in vain;
Laying in hopes of a gentle rain.
With the coming of rain, life began anew;
For in place of the seed a flower grew.
If times seem harsh with troubles indeed;
remember the transition of a simple seed.

Your story and Tango's pic touched me, My thoughts and prayers are with you.
