I have a business trip to the Huntsville/Athens area next week. Any tt'ers live in that general area that could direct me to some good dayhikes, things to see, places to avoid, etc? I'll be there m-f, the job should be a piece of cake, and I should have time to explore the area some.
Thanks in advance...

le Subtil, the Monte Sano area is covered with trails and most of them are good. There are not a lot of views, but a lot of good hiking.
A good, moderate-to-easy loop would be the Stone Cuts trail in the State Park at the top of Monte Sano. You can get a map of the trails there for 25 cents at the Ranger Station near the hiker's parking lot in the park.

If you're looking for something more challenging, then the Alms House-Waterline-High Trail-Tollgate loop is a very good workout which includes a little bit of nontechnical climbing. It's about 5 miles.

Feel free to email me at the address on my contact page. And if you have time, there are a lot of TT'ers in the area who love to get together for lunch.

I'll be out of town next week on vacation (CRUISE), but Opie and others can help.

Well, I have dayhiked the Sipsey, but I didn't know if he'd have a whole day off to devote to it, otherwise I would have suggested it.

Thanks for all of the responses!

I won't likely be able to do lunch, I typically take only a half hour and bring something to eat in the plant, if I even get a break.

I'll have my evenings free, though. That's the part where I get bored. I hate sitting in motel rooms; I don't watch TV.

Gojo - my map shows Athens north of Decatur, lol.

ya, he'd have to take a whole day off, but it'd be well worth it for the sipsey. Monte Sano is great and bitpusher is out resident guru on it. Maybe the HMWHC could call an emergency meeting for lunch with you..we'd love to meetcha...you like hooters?...

oh..hey supertroll!!!!...missed seeing you around lately, we all have

Hooters? Lessee, purty girls in short t-shirts and tiny orange hotpants, with those lovely southern accents. I think I could tolerate that.

SuperTroll is an actual, real backpacker that occaisionally goes out with some of us. I've met him in the flesh, and he's not OPIE.

I always thought that he was a real person. That's why his post was confusing. It was written like the person typing was about another person instead of himself. That damn Deion Sanders...he has everyone refering to themself by name.

Oh My Gawd! Be careful Le Sub. I hear the SOUTH is real, real skeery.

Another thing, I thought all the TTers, except a few from Montana and Michigan were from Alabama. HeHeHe! I'm kidding.

Dang newgirl, how can redneck bubba's be any more dangerous than redneck cowboys. It's all the same, just with a different accent and shorts instead of down clothing.

Poor you Le Subtil! A business trip to Alabama! That really sucks! hehe

Huntsville's alright though..just nothing to do here.

Don't let them them con you into going to the HMWHC meeting at Hooters. They'll probably make you go to the strip club afterwards too! I bet you would hate that! lol

Well BAMA, I was hoping. I can hear Klink now "I KNOW NOTHING"

I am still going to take you up on a private tour of Sipsey. Sometime around Christmas or so I'll try to set something up for mid to late January to give you plenty of notice, if that's ok. Also, I went back and printed out all of your posts on the Sipsey thread to try and follow your route. If it's ok I was planning on emailing you with some questions. I don't have them yet, so it will be a few days. So many of the waterfalls in the pics I saw looked like falls I had seen on "Discovering Alabama" I had not seen any of them in person, except Falls Creek and Big Tree area.

Thank You for the kind words, they are muchly appreciated...when illness strikes you lose many things, time to post to TT was one of the things I lost for nearly 7 Months. Having been to a Hooter's in at least 25 cities, I can vouch for the fact that the Huntsville Hooter's is in first place. However, the Clearwater Hooter's runs a close second.

Dayhiker, I haven't met Supertroll in person but I know who he is. He is really a nice guy from what others have said about him.
Email me anytime for Sipsey questions - I will answer most of them but there are a lot of things about Sipsey that are not generally known. I will answer even these in time. I am still learning of some of the the Indian legends and sacride places myself. The best way to learn about Sipsey is to wear out some boot leather. I will give you a hint. Most of the "nice" places have signs pointing to them. Learn to read these signs.
