Heres the deal
I'm one of those people who realy leave the pavement and never thought I would do more then car camp but a good friend of mine has dared me to go backpacking with him. He's planning a trip for this weekend and I'm freaked about it. So I came snooping around to see if anything on-line would be useful...any advice for a first timer?

Hope you have a thick skin - you'll get plenty of "advice" here! Take it all in good fun - most people here mean no harm. :)

Welcome to TT! Make sure you brought your sense of humor and some thick skin if you're gonna hang around here- Any other advice you might want, it's helpful to be more specific- What kind of gear do you have? Have you ever done any kind of hiking before? What area will you be hiking in? Do a lot of questions get you mad?

Corporal Nasty
I'm borrowing all the gear from my bf. I've done some day hikes but nothing much. We'll be hikeing around some place called Round-Top in the Sierra. No questions don't get me mad (unless its one of those woman days).

Okay, so your bf has hiked before? If so, he's probably not gonna let you go out there too unprepared. Make sure you have some good waterproof boots that fit you well, make sure they don't slide around on your feet too much- You really shouldn't get any blisters from a good pair of boots. Other than that, make sure your pack fits nicely, have someone who's done it before help adjust it to your body, fill it with plenty of water, enough to eat, something to keep you dry, and some duct tape. Those are really the basics- Don't kill yourself, go at your own pace, and keep drinking that water.

Duct Tape?

Yup. If you start to get a blister, put duct tape on it, AS SOON as you feel a blister coming on.
That, and your boyfriend can use it to tape you up if you complain too much.

Duct tape is arguably the most versatile item you could carry.. use for blisters, cover rip in tent or clothing, gag your boyfriend's mouth if he gets too annoying, ect...

School is good, I'm really enjoying my astronomy class. Although FA still hasn't figured anything out, they've sent me two reimbursement checks (I'm not elligible for aid anymore). I havn't paid my tuition yet, not until they have their #&%!$ straightened out.

(Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

Sawry, blisty -
just doing a skin check. Hehehee!

Advice-
Mole skin... it'll reduce blistering.

Or does b/f stand for something we're not aware of?

Duct Tape
My recommendation: put it on your heels before you start the hike, don't wait for something to start hurting. Also, another possible situation requiring duct tape: Before and after.

Once you have packed your duct tape be sure to throw in a cap and gloves. It will be chilly - local weather said they had a dusting of snow at Tahoe this morning and Round Top is not too far away.

The hike from the trailhead to Round Top Lake is just a few miles. You should be fine if you are in reasonable shape, although the elevation may make things seem worse. Enjoy the scenery - its beautiful up there.

The best advice:
Stop worrying, have fun. It's an adventure. It will unfold. All you have to do is be receptive. It will not necessarily be easy, but it will be worthwhile.

A First Timer Ritual
Every First-Time backpacker must hike naked. It's a ritual that goes back in time. Everybody here did it their first time, and you must too.
