“U.N. Upholds Ban on 'Dwarf Throwing' Sep 27, 10:54 am ET GENEVA (Reuters) - A tiny stuntman who protested against a French ban on the bizarre practice of "dwarf throwing" lost his case before a U.N. human rights body, which said the need to protect human dignity was paramount. Manuel Wackenheim had argued the 1995 ban by France's highest administrative court was discriminatory and deprived him of a job being hurled around discotheques by burly men. In a statement Friday the U.N. Human Rights Committee said it was satisfied "the ban on dwarf-tossing was not abusive but necessary in order to protect public order, including considerations of human dignity." The committee also said the ban "did not amount to prohibited discrimination." The pastime, imported from the United States and Australia in the 1980s, consists of people throwing tiny stuntmen as far as possible, usually in a bar or discotheque. The stuntman wears a crash helmet and padded clothing which has handles on the back to facilitate throwing the human projectile. The Frenchman, who measures 1.14 meter (3 ft 10 inches), filed his case in 1999 with the U.N. committee made up of 18 independent experts who examine states' compliance with the 1976 International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.” 10:36:55 AM 10/02/02 “I believe the sport originated in New Zealand.” 10:40:25 AM 10/02/02 The headline: “U.N. throws out dwarf” 10:41:25 AM 10/02/02 “Blondes die out by 2202 By GRAHAM DIGGINES NATURAL blondes are an endangered species and will be extinct by 2202, say scientists. There are too few people carrying the blonde gene for the hair colour to continue down the generations. So women and men with blonde hair, blonde eyebrows and blue eyes will vanish from the face of the earth within 200 years, says the World Health Organisation. Researchers predict the last blonde will live in FINLAND which has the highest number of true blondes in the world. The problem is that blonde hair is caused by a recessive gene. A child has to have the gene on both sides of the family in the grandparents’ generation to get blonde hair. But blonde genes are rapidly becoming watered down. A spokesman for the WHO research team said: “It looks like their days are numbered.” And bottle blondes like singer Kylie Minogue and surgically- enhanced model Jordan may even be responsible for the demise of their natural rivals. The WHO spokesman added: “Artificial blondes tend to be blonder and possibly more attractive to men. “This could mean more and more men are selecting them as partners over their naturally blonde peers.” The number of bottle blondes is likely to soar. A German study has found fair-haired waitresses or barmaids earn 20 per cent more in tips than others. Whew...I was starting to get worried.” 1:06:49 AM 10/03/02
