Heavy packs
If you want to backpack and either can't give up the luxury of home. Or if you can't carry the extra weight of even a few extra items you should consider getting yourself a lama.

Lama
They are not that bad. I've smelled worse breath on dogs and some people.

They are actually better on trails and do less damage than people carrying heavy packs.

I have been told they are the equivalent of a 350 pound person walking along the trail.

I talked to a park ranger in Missouri who said that a lot of parks will allow lamas in areas where it is backpacking only because they do not leave tons of manure like horses do. Lamas produce pellet feces which looks like deer dropping. They do not bring in non-native seed in their feces because they can eat browse like deer do.They also have soft padded hooves that work great for climbing hills in South America but also do not tear up the trails.

Tis all true. They don't have hooves. Just pads and nails like a dog.

I don't think llamas should be packing - I'm against guns.

On a backpacking trip in CO a few years back, my buddy and I encountered these llamas who had escaped. Don't know who hauled all the stuff back to the trailhead....

FYI - You can see some pics of many llama trips a lot of us have been on. Go to Phil's Photo Page and check out some of the llama trip reports at the top. One of the TT regulars, Melanie (Mel).

I've been on three llama trips and didn't find the llamas objectionable. Horses really can mess up a trail if it is heavily used for packing.
