Doomed BP trip

“I know that anytime you get to go BPing is a good time... but I had a heck of a time finding the good things on this one. First it was suppose to rain all weekend and my don wanted to go. So I shelled out a lot of moola for a nice rain jacket. We packed up Thursday and the pack was a bit heavier than usual with all the rain gear. We head out Friday and hike out of Caledonia SP to Rocky Mountain Shelter. So far so good... Well get to the shelter and there is no place to pitch a tent so we opt to stay in the shelter. We are down to about 20oz of water between the two of us and I go to get water and the spring is bone dry! So we run a dry camp that night. Then some other hikers come in and start to drink a few beers and were so god aweful loud. In the morning we quickly pack up and notice a sping up the trail two miles away. So we head out to it.. Well Stick dawg ( my son ) trips and fall, bangs his head and arm and bends his hiking pole. I check him out and he seems to be alright, just a little banged around. we head off and find the stream bone dry as well... there was suppose to be another stream about 200 yards north of that... There was and there was water in it too! Unfortunately that in the water were two huge bags of household garbage! We look at each other and decide to head back to the road and head home.... I got home and dropped of Stick Dawg and I thought I would go back and finish it out.. I repack my backpack, get rid of all the rain gear I did not need ( since it did rain ) and I get my boots and I go to lace them up and my lace snaps... I think it was an omen... I pushed my luck as far as I could and I just hung my head and told my wife... get dressed we are going out to eat!

“Yup... it sucked. So today I mowed the lawn and spent most of the day cleaning and doing maintenance on all my BP gear for the season. I had it all over the place and taking is all apart and cleaining it and going over each piece closely. I even took Stick Dawgs hiking pole and I was able to straighten it back out with a bit of pressure and a small rubber mallet. So Stick Dawg is happy that his hiking poles are fixed. I think tomorrow I will head to the local outfitters to get me some new laces, brush off this trip and try again here soon.

“Yup.. Two bags... The stream made a fantastic little pool to get water from and at the bottom was two bags of garbage.. ug! I was a bit upset.. considering that our water bladders were empty and this was the only water we had seen all day.. Shaking my head!”

“Sift through bags of garbage...sure...with the kind of luck he had, he would contract, hepatitis C, gonnorhea, aids, or a rat would bite him. Sift through garbage.....OK”

“There are stiff penalties for contaminating a water source. It is worse than just dumping it on the ground.

“In the first post.. I mentioned it did rain... It should read DIDN'T rain.. So now Stick Dawg has a nice rain jacket for the next time.. and I agree with MountaintMaster... I was not feelign lucky... I looked up stream too and there was soda bottles and cans in the water and down stream was stagnant.. It was a sad sight. On the way back we walked the highway back hoping to catch a house that would give us water and about two miles of back tracking we found a place that was a boot camp for Juvies called vision quest. We yogied some water from them and walked down the road some more and there was this beautiful stream ( racoon creek ) We looked at each other again and shook our heads and kept on walking to the car.”

“You are right Biz.... I will get a hold of the rangers tomorrow ( Micheaux State Forest ) and let them know about it. I know the road it is on and it is the only stream with water in it. I too hate litterbugs!”

“AIDS doesn't survive that long outside the body. Hepatitis A & B are pretty hardy though. C can only be contracted through direct contact with an infected person.

Did you really light yourself on fire? Yup... First time out... I filled my fuel bottle over the 2/3 mark and wooooooom... It is funny now but at the time it was a bit scarey... Thus the name sparky...

Why the 2003 designation? 2003 is when I can retire from the USN with 20 years in...But I think I will stay until 2005... Then I plan on hiking the AT from GA to PA.

“Got a question. If you found garbage bags in the middle of a water supply, is there a reason you didn't remove them? As far as looking for stuff identifying who put them there, you're wasting your time. Even if you found twenty pieces of mail with a person's address, it doesn't prove they put the bags in the water.

Seems to me you could have at least yanked them out of the water.”

“It may not prove too much if items in the trash gave a person's name or address, but it would most likely warrant a visit from the cops. That may be enough to make them think twice about doing it again.”
