Tent Heater
Can someone help me with understanding a safe tent heater? How much ventilation will it require, the safest, the most reliable, etc. Thanks for your time!

Ventilation. Just fire that puppy up full blast. It should melt the roof of your tent before you could get carbon monoxide poisoning.

People die every year from using these things.

If you want to use an unvented heater, leave all the doors and windows open and use a carbon monoxide detector.

Better yet, carry appropriate sleeping gear and don't waste your money on a potentially fatal piece of gear.

I have reported on people who fired up space heaters inside the tent and never woke up. The question you need to ask yourself is, would I rather die of freezing to death or asphyxiation?

Violin's advice is accurate, much as it pains me to admit he's right. But he is in this case.

Ultimately, I stopped taking overnight trips in winter because I discovered that I just didn't like being out in the cold all that time.

But a good winter sleeping bag and a four-season tent with vestibule are minimum requirements for winter camping in my book. Not a space heater, unless you are looking for a painless way to commit suicide.

Violin and Geobeet, I suspect you fellers have just been reeled in by the latest troll...

But seriously, just build a campfire in your tent...

I didn't even know such a thing existed. Why would you winter camp if you wanted a heater, isn't that defeating the purpose of freezing your butt off and living to tell the story?

They're selling barrel stoves at the local Army-Navy store for hunter's tents. All you need is a string of pack horses and you're set!

Tent heaters...
I like the Camptrails "TrollFire 32." I got one for my ex-wife and it did the job nicely.

I'm always torn about how to respond to questions like the one from newbcamper. Should I give serious advice and potentially fall victim to the trollbait? Or should I just ignore it.

Usually I just ignore it. Too bad if newbcamper really doesn't know that heating your tent just isn't done much anymore (unless you're talking one of those huge hunter's basecamp tents which actually have a special hole in it for the flue of a stove to go through). But that's one of the costs of trolls...

mtnsteve, you're linking from protected pages - you need to go to your public community page, then to the photos, and get the link from there. If you have further questions, MrHyde can probably answer them.... :-)

I once saw a two-man backpacking tent with a wrod-burning stove that only weighed 6lbs.

Wish I could find the link. It looked pretty cool.

My advice now!
Soak the tent good with Girl Scout juice, crawl inside, get in the sleeping bag all nice and snuggy, and light a match.

A candle lantern will increase the temperature quite a bit.

They make chemical heaters for hands and feet. I suppose if you could carry enough of them...

My wife took some training to be a Girl Scout leader, and apparently there is a concoction known as "Girl Scout juice" which is not a petroleum-based charcoal starter, but will help you get a fire started quickly. It's probably alcohol or some such. Girl Scouts may not use charcoal starter to get a fire going, it's against their rules.

Girl Scout juice usually refers to Coleman fuel.

Exponent BP Lantern
Light and hang...adds heat as well as light, if the tent is 4 season, the heat difference inside the tent will be significant when compared to the outdoor temp. Three season tents with a lot of mesh let to much of the heat escape.
