I feel like taking a blow dryer out to the yard to start working on that snow....

If the weather holds steady for a while I can start some winter greens in the hoop house....I cant wait, real veggies!!! Hurry up spring!

I'm hoping to have a cold frame built by next fall. It's part of the dog and log side extravaganza. The priorities are stone work, some planting, and cold frame. I was hoping for that Johnny's code to double up my order. They sell mayapple, trout lillies and trillium and dutchmen's breachs, among other wonderful shade lovers, but for a pretty price. I'm tempted to find some state land in the middle of nowhere and take some from here and there. I don't think it's legal though. Maybe I'll check into that.

Sass, If I can find the time, I know where there is a small bit of woods that is destined for destruction that has a TON of mayapple on it...

When they start sprouting I wills ee if I can get over there and dig some up.

Funny, I was never able to grow regular spinach in Florida, so I grew what's called Malabar spinach, a tasty vine that reseeds itself like mad. I think I'm far enough north now that I may try to grow real spinach in the fall.

You can grow just about anything in a cold frame.

looked into what the State says about plant harvesting. Not allowed unless a site is about to be cleared for construction. They offered the name of a local greenhouse and pond supply store that propagates native plants and I also found that Michigan Bulb Company sells the wildflowers I want for less than most garden catalogues. Anyone have any experience w/ them?

Rats! no wonder they're so cheap. dead plants don't take much heat or water I guess.

Spirit, almost sounds like Springhill!
Thanks for the warning about the mayapples. Ab knows not to eat or touch any plant in the outdoors w/out checking w/ us first....birchdog on the other hand is a stoopid dog and would probably eat the entire lot.

I love that purple azalea though. Where did you get it?

We just out in 2 Japanese maples out front. Now all of the intense blue lithodora doesn't look out of place.

sass, I know they do. there is also Jansons, and Johnsons too, and I boought some seed taters from Jansons the other day, also some fat healthy fresh canna tubers as well for .50 each (not dried up and icky like you get at the box stores in packages) I am surrounded by these farmstands. Down county line rd too there are some private places that open up now and then to the public for selling---the flower lady for one who I discovered last year by accident who sells daylillies and hostas from her own gigantic garden which is breath taking to see but she only sells for a few weeks every year for 3.50 a plant (big huge healhty plants she digs up right there for you when you buy them). I am going to have to call her soon to find out when she opens again, I want more daylillies!
Then there is County line Greenhouse, which I managed to find open to the public once last year---they have all kinds of special hardy perrenials and alpine plants, with a very cool koi pond, demestration gardens and a Gnome garden that is way cool LOL

There's a bunch of places like that around here too, Sc. I just have to find them all. :P

There's a big storm system coming this way, so I may hold off on planting much this weekend. Actually, I need to get up and find out how much of a gift certificate my aunt Carolyn got for me at a local nursery that's the total bomb!

We got 2-3 inches of rain last night, and our problem drainage spot is going to get excavated as soon as HPM gets back from his haircut. We got 3 pots, one large purplish one, a smaller white one stamped with Chinese characters, and a small black one, that we are putting out over the area that will get dug out and backfilled with gravel. We're working the front yard over in a Japanese theme, and we already have a series of viewing triangles going. Coolness. I need to learn to post pictures here.

Treebait, does it freeze hard in NC? Up here we have to move our pots inside for the winter or they end up broken into little bits by the end of winter. =(

Hope you'll post pictures when you're done! It sounds cool.

No idea about that, Sass. I move the softer terra cotta pots in no matter what, but high fired ceramics should be fine.

Concrete and plastic are all that's safe up here. Its a bummer when you spend $45 on a pot and find it in shards come spring. But it doesn't usually get as cold down there does it? I bet you're a couple zones lower than us. Yep, you have about ten degrees on SE MI, on average. We get a few freakishly cold days most winters.

I'm near the southern edge of zone 7. THe general rule of thumb is if it freezes, empty the pots and store them in the garage stacked upside down, unless, you're bringing the pot and plant inside.
