Scary, yes. Flash floods are scary as hell (or so I've heard, I've never witnessed one myself) But yeah, you're lucky the water didn't rise quicker and higher than it did. 6 feet is a decent barrier, I'd be worried anywhere near a drainage during a thunderstorm in canyon country!

sounds like a helluva storm - there's nothing quite as awesome as watching a storm rage away from a safe distance. Another Zion trip, we were up on the west rim watching a real brutal thunderstorm hit the east rim. What was really cool is you could hear the wind coming from miles away as it raced toward you...

I read an account of John Wesley Powell's Colorado River expedition and portaging sounds like absolute hell. I've been wanting to get into some boat-related trips (specifically, a Green River float) but I can't get anyone with enough time up to go with me...
