“Hey Mapes! Just got back from the annual beach vacation. No turtle babies yet. It's too early in the season. I helped some other volunteers help get a huge mama loggerhead out of a big hole in the sand. Some kids dug a huge pit in the sand and never filled it back up again. She must have come onto shore to lay her eggs and somehow got herself down in the hole and could not get out. They are good swimmers, but not good on land. Loggerheads move along the sand with their flippers, unlike land turtles who have feet.”

“No, it was really early in the morning, so no pics. I was out for a walk on the beach when I came upon the volunteers. The turtles usually nest at night. The mama had been there all night and the turtle people were worried about dehydration. The good thing is that she made it safely back to the water and she was able to lay her eggs before she got stuck.
