tAngered, the crazed corporal lashes out a more inanimate objects. "Take that, you cursed bedpost, Eat my shorts you slimy broomstick!"

But they fight back, and the corporal reels from their combined onslaught. Stricken, wounded, the corporal struggles. He grinds the broomstick down to sawdust, loses his footing on the sawdust and goes down again.

The bedpost, sizing up the situation, tries to take advantage, but the outnumbered corporal refuses to give up.

He kicks at the bedpost, and breaks his toe. For now, the bedpost has won as an uneasy truce descends on the bloody battlefield, the late afternoon sun glinting off equipment scattered around the corporal's muddy foxhole.

He looks over to his nearest comrade, Maple Leaf. Maple has just been attacked by a dead turkey, a cold, heartless bird that assaults mindlessly. Maple also goes down, holding her hand.

The patrol planned for Saturday is now down to a few pitiful wounded vets who will have to carry the load for the stricken corporal.

The Battle of Belleau Wood hangs in the balance. Geobeet will have to limp his way out of the field hospital to lead the final assault on Hill 2200 in place of the wounded corporal.

"Don't worry corporal," he shouts. "We'll win this one for the Gimper."

Yeah, for awhile there I was wondering. I saw a photo of Maple falling, and a photo of Chelle climbing a rock, and then I thought, "Oh, I get it. He fell off the see-saw."

That toe almost qualifies to be part of Violin's left foot. And the broomstick really put a shiner on you.

At least my injury came out in the field at the hands of a real rock.

Shaking has pretty much stopped, with the last recorded quake about 6 hours ago. Now we won't have anything to talk about around here....

PTL, Post Tectonic Letdown.

After going through quakes in the Philippines, I would feel very uneasy about the earth under my feet for a week after. That feeling of standing in a giant vat of jello was unsettling.

Glad to see no posts on this thread over the past few days.

I increased my jog-time up to 7 minutes per jog today with no ill effects. I did do a 45-minute bike ride (moderate speed, no hills) on Saturday, which made it a bit sore, but it was nice to get in a decent workout. The only down side of increasing the time I get to jog is that the time is approaching that I will perspire enough to warrant a shower - that won't fit too well with my routine, since there is no shower in this building. Have lost a little weight - only a couple pounds - so hopefully more will start to come off soon.

I'm doing pretty well at holding back and not trying to run fast, even when really out of shape people pass me (grrrrrr!). Also, two friends have set American records in the past few weeks at somewhat obscure events (50k and 30k (for 44-year-olds)), so I'm eager to try to run a little faster....

Good to hear it, Marty. I'll be going on the Revenge at the Catskills trip, broken toe nonwithstanding. Other than that, it's healing well.

Geobeeten, You are keright-
I'll say it even before the trip starts. No doubt about it- If I was smart, I'd take your warning, and make it through the year with ten toes. I'm just looking forward to revenge on dem mountains way too much to let the toe (or intelligence) stop me.

corporal nasty...
schmuck!!! go and do more damage and be longer on the recovery, or wait a bit and get healthy and never look back...

Only fools play foolishly.

Geo...good that you waited it out, and look at you, it still hurts. CN...learn from others instead of being a dolt.

Almost there
Myu orthopedist cut the cords this morning, said I am doing well, and recommended that I walk on my toes a little while each day to strengthen the foot.

Two more rehab sessions - tomorrow and Friday - and I am officially off this list.

The doc says it will still take about three months before I am back to normal, so short hikes will be the rule, hopefully getting longer as time goes by.

It's been slightly more than three months to this point.

You are on your way, Geobeet!

Where is Artex? Isn't he on this list again? How is your neck, and yes, we do want all the details on how you hurt it while on vacation. But not quite as much detail as Mapleleaf gave us. I'm still blind from the bugs bunny reference.

It's still a bit stiff and sore, and that will continue, lessening over time. When I overwork it on a walk or series of exercises, it tends to tighten up the next day or two.

Geo, I'm not equipped for the winter onslaught Maple & Co. are undertaking. Plus, I don't suspect my heel will be sufficiently healed (no pun intended) to be able to accomplish everything these guys will do on the hike in January. If you want to get together for the day part of the outing with them, I would be willing and could use the company. Let me know sometime what you think.

Next month is just too far off for me to make up my mind right now. It would depend ultimately on the weather. I just need to survive this month and Christmas. Maybe after the new year I will come to grips with reality again. Sorry to be so noncommittal.

That's ok. Wasn't looking for committment right now. Got so much on my plate at the moment, this thing is not exactly on the front burner. Just food for thought, that's all.

I'd like to think I'm officially off this list, but still have a Doc appt next week to have it checked out to make sure I haven't done any real damage to the knee. I went skiing last weekend and it didn't start hurting till afternoon, then it was just a little strained from the all day pushing hard so I wouldn't fall and get hurt again. But, unfortunately I had a new developement on my right foot(heal actually), the tendon that wraps around the heal is shortening and causes pain when pressure is put on it(sucks getting older)...still it's NOT gonna stop me from doing the things I love!!!! I WILL still ski, hike, and do whatever else I can when I feel like it. No pain, no gain.

Martyb, good luck with the running, awesome your on the road to recovery.

Corporal Nasty, just don't insulate your feet too well this weekend, let the cold numb the pain. Then, of course, you run into the problem of getting frostbite on your other toes and then they all may fall off. But ah, what the heck. Evolution is making them shorter each generation anyway, so your just speeding up the process.

From Geezr: "You want exercise, get out here and shovel all this d@mn snow."

From Yahoo: Current temp in Billings: 16; and: "Snow will fall across much of South Central and Southeast Montana into North Central Wyoming through this evening. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches are expected."

C'mon Geezr, with those temps and that amount of snowfall, you oughtta be able to use your leaf blower on that stuff! Should I call my mom and have her come over and shovel for ya?
