“Cottonsocks, sorry to hear that, but it's best to just chill out for the time being. Do whatever it takes. In the long run, whatever happens, you will be better off not trying to do something and then making things worse.

I know it sucks. I had to shut down for about six months when I broke my leg. So I know what you're going through. I had to check in on peoples' hikes on TT and hike vicariously through them.

Then I fixed the date in my head when I would be able to get the cast off, when I would be through rehab, when I would take my first spring trip, etc. Then it took most of last spring and fall to get to the point where I could hike without being in pain the next day. The main thing is this: if you try to overdo it, you will be worse off and the time away from hiking will be even longer, or perhaps forever.

So, repeat after me, "It takes what it takes!"

“Went to the doctor for low back and hip pain last night. They ordered an MRI. Said she thinks it's some kind of disc problem. :-(”

Not everyone gets to the top of Everest...strengths and weaknesses are assessed and those that risk the team, stay behind...my suggestion, is that during the time of rehab, stay home and rehab. Asking others to help is selfish and risky...no offense, but thats the way it is.

What if somthing happens and you have to be evacuated FAST...it puts others at risk and diminishes the enjoyment of everyone. Stay home, be safe, be smart and live vicariously through others.”

I "tweaked" my back this morning and so now I'm on my way to the chiropractor to see if he can't "straighten" me out, again.”

I had my MRI this morning. I knew the tech so she got me in to see my charts before they go to my doctor tomorrow.

I have a herniated disk in my L4-L5 region (low back) that's pinching nerves and putting pressure on my spine. The herniated disk in broken loose. Although the doctor there wouldn't go into options in any detail because he's not my doctor, he did mention things like metal pins and screws to pull things back into place. He called it a "pretty involved surgery." He also said it would have to be done by a neurosurgeon because it involves the nerves and spinal cord in that region.

I'm a little scared. I don't know what all this means or how serious it is. I'm just praying that it isn't something permanently dehabilitating. I guess I'll know more tomorrow after I see the doctor.”

“That sounds similar to what my mom had. She didn't require any pins though. The surgery was pretty complicated, and the only problem she had was that she's one of 5% who grew back scar tissue in the area, hence a 2nd surgery. I hope everything goes well for you IJ.”

“Get a second opinion about any hardware they propose to install. I had a friend who had some screws inserted into his spine and it screwed him up worse than he was to start with. Get a second and third opinion before going ahead with that stuff.”

“eewww, i hope you don't have to get the pins! my dad had those, didn't sound like fun...they didn't work, so they eventually took them out. if the doc tells you you need pins, i would get a second opinion if i were you! i guess that's pretty obvious, but it seems to me like most back doctors are quacks. my dad's most recent one has cut back his pain medication (that he's been on for years) so much that he can hardly sleep at night.”

“I will only do surgery as a last resort. Man, I'm only 28, I'm too young for this crap. My fear is taht it will be something that will demobilize me now or in the long term. I'm an active person and I'd go crazy.”

“Had to go into the Urgent Care Clinic on Saturday because of the pain. Now my lower back feels fine, but there is obviously a pinched nerve in there somewhere. Can't feel much of my right foot right now.

I'm hoping the chiropractor can get things "realigned" to stop the pinching on the nerve. It feels like when you freeze your feet, and when they start ot unthaw. You get that tingling feeling and it hurts to walk on it.

Otherwise, it sounds like surgery.”
