She will be down for the count for awhile. 1 rod and 4 pins.” 8:07:00 PM 10/26/02 “YEEOOOWCH. I knew I got off lucky! My sympathy to her. Are they doing something to prevent clotting? That is what they didn't do for me and that created a serious problem. How old is she? Wow Tango, the fibula was more than enough for me to handle. Tell her to hang in there. It does heal in time. Just not as fast as we want. And my next step will be rehab. What fun! When people ask me how I broke min” 8:14:33 PM 10/26/02 That got away on me! “when people ask me how I broke mine, I've started telling them "Tonya Harding!" A sense of humor helped me through it. I wish her well.” 8:16:42 PM 10/26/02 “That's the weirdest thing she broke the tib not fib, usually it is the other way around. I don't know about the blood thinner. I know she was on a morphine pump, that she controlled. Then they gave her oxycontin (sp). She has a boot and not a cast. She is in her mid 60's and had never broken a bone before. Thanks for your good thoughts, I appreciate them.” 8:19:22 PM 10/26/02 “Well my Mom pulled a Coporal Nasty on a curb! So she has to think of a good cover story too!!” 8:20:47 PM 10/26/02 “My son bailed Nasty out. Counter attack and ground assault. I made up a ditty to sing for people: I broke my fibula But not the tibia I ain't a-kiddin ya I broke my fibula All she has to do is turn it around. Those drugs are just pain killers. If there is no family history of clot problems, she might not need it. My doc had me taking one aspirin a day, but that obviously was not enough. They probably won't cast it until the swelling goes down. I waited more than a week, and it was still somewhat swollen then. Sure did screw things up. Easy things became difficult, moderately easy things became nearly impossible, and difficult things became totally impossible. And time drug by so slowly. The 10 days in the hospital actually broke it up some. The Tonya Harding quip works well. They look at me wondering whether to look serious or what and then they get it and crack up.” 8:33:11 PM 10/26/02 “LOL, I'll pass on the ditty!” 8:35:31 PM 10/26/02 “What, it's a perfectly good ditty. Used less than eight weeks. It has plenty of mileage left.” 8:39:07 PM 10/26/02 “I told my Mom to tell everyone she was giving a vicious check into the boards!” 8:40:39 PM 10/26/02 “That would be one heck of a check.” 8:49:05 PM 10/26/02 “I broke everything worth breaking, well, almost. I had compound fractures to both ankles and the right one was severed and only hanging on by a chunk of skin. I`ve been through the pins, plates and screws many, many times already and need to go have it done again. They did bone graphs, (sp) for the better part of a year and a half rebuilding them. I can walk enough to do day hikes again now, but no backpacking in the near future:( And it`s only been a little over 4 years, but they told me I`d never walk again, but they`ve been wrong about everything so far:)” 9:23:47 PM 10/26/02 BF “How did you get compound fxs of both ankles? It's amazing what dedication and the human spirit are capable of!!!” 9:28:15 PM 10/26/02 “Wow Big Foot, that is what determination will do. Remind me never to tell you that you can't do something. My hat's off to you. I've had enough with the little bit I got. I wish I could rip this cast off myself. Two days and a wake-up! Then I learn to walk again.” 9:37:24 PM 10/26/02 “I`m sorry,...car accident.” 9:38:30 PM 10/26/02 “I`m not bitter about it at all, because of that wreck I took stock in what`s actually important to me and I`m a better person because of it all. I was a little over two years before I could stand on either one of mine. It took a lot longer to learn to walk again than I thought it would, but it`s going good now:)” 9:43:04 PM 10/26/02 “You know, in all the time they were working on me they never once put my ankles or legs in casts. Guess they knew I couldn`t get up on `em anyway.” 9:47:22 PM 10/26/02 “Geez, and I thought the Achilles surgery I had last January was a pain....actually it has been, but you guys are my heros coming through what you've come through without killing someone simply out of misery. Heal well....and the best to your mom, tango.” 8:38:52 AM 10/27/02 “I thought of killing someone, but then I thought about it and decided, it's been done before. I need to come up with a new act. We do go through bumps in life, and despite misery or agony, these things happen to lots of people. The key thing to remember when injured is that it happens to other people as well, and they survive, so shall we. And it does help provide perspective as to what handicapped people go through every day of their lives. If I am appalled over the way people treat me with my temporary handicap, how must those who go through life struggling with some issue feel? And I am surprised over the number of people on this board who have checked in with broken bones offering sympathy and good wishes. A good percentage of active posters. And, as I have said, it could have been worse - a lot worse, as Tango and Big Foot have testified. And for all the misery they must go through, their injuries could have been worse. We tend to overlook the risks of just living an everyday life, and the overall fragility of health. Truly, we never know. So we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and find out what we need to do to go on. And there is always my friend Rick. They can't glue his real leg back on, take the shrapnel out of his other leg, or cure the other health issues that arose from his Vietnam injuries. That man spends more time in a hospital in a year than I have spent in the past decade, a decade that includes two major life-threatening illnesses. The only thing that keeps that man going is his sense of humor, and his wonderful wife. So, we all have to put in our time every now and again. Besides, JUST TWO MORE DAYS!!! I think I've almost made it through. I'm ready for me next big excitment: REHAB. YEAAAAAAAA! And, as soon as I can swing it, a walk, however short, along the Canal. Woohoooo.” 8:54:37 AM 10/27/02 “Tango, I hope that your Mom's leg heals up quick. Geobeet, good luck with your leg coming out party. Bring baby wipes with you. :)” 9:04:03 AM 10/27/02 “Thanks LyndyS, MM2003, BF and Geo. I have to tell you I thank God every day that I am healthy! I live by the motto: You may think you have it bad but there is always someone else that it worse off than you.” 9:14:23 AM 10/27/02 “My feelings are hurt cause I can't go to Tc2,been planning a year. But it gets put in perspective reading these posts. I'll get some cheese & fruit to go with my whine.” 9:38:16 AM 10/27/02 JM “Don't forget the baloney.” 9:46:29 AM 10/27/02 “<ZING>” 11:10:29 AM 10/27/02 “Battleground TT. Ya'll are making me nauseaous (is that how you spell it?)” 3:01:44 PM 10/27/02 “No” 3:12:41 PM 10/27/02 “My medical Dossier: I was born with something wrong with my intestines, so they flew me to NYC and I spent the first couple of months in There with a couple of surgerys I lost MOST of my left foot in a lawn mower accident when I was 3 yrs old. That took a while to walk again I had surgerys on both my eyes and ears before I was 6 When I ws 12 I had a major spinal fusion at Dupont institute in Delaware. That took a while before I could walk I broke my right femor in 1/2 when I was 16. I was actually walking a lot sooner than you would think on that one. Since then (knock knock) no major problems........... except 3 weeks ago I hyperextended my elbow so bad that I thought I broke it. First thought that came to mind.........yep you guessed it>>I CAN HIKE WITH A BAD ARM!!!!!!” 3:20:07 PM 10/27/02 “After all that, are you still you? Now I know what you mean by sir pete of mill work. You've worked your way through the mill!” 3:44:48 PM 10/27/02 “Hey those are only the highlights! the whole game was quite a show!” 3:51:57 PM 10/27/02 “You and Evel Knievel!” 4:46:43 PM 10/27/02 “Sirpete man that is alot of shi! to go through! 8o” 4:48:54 PM 10/27/02 “Nothing but history man, ain't nothing but a thing, you know what I mean. Had to go through that to get where I am and who I am today, and I like it here. Wouldn't trade it if I could.” 5:05:30 PM 10/27/02 “Very pimp way of looking at it! 8)” 5:07:56 PM 10/27/02 “I hate to pop your bubble Sirpete, but nobody is gonna offer to trade for all that, LOL.” 7:07:14 PM 10/27/02 “LOL. You got a point there. BUT, just in case there was anyone thinkin of it.......I still won't. cause I know there are a lot of sickos out there in TT land” 9:36:19 PM 10/27/02 “trade? no you misunderstand.... we just want to take your liver... :P” 4:09:40 AM 10/28/02 “I'm astonished, SirPete. With all that, and you can hike 20 miles in one day with a backpack on. I've known people with backproblems requiring spinal fusion that still could barely stand the pain afterwards, nevermind wearing a pack and hiking on rocky trails for miles.” 6:00:36 AM 10/28/02 “I think Lyndy, the operative phrase is Use it or lose it. Besides being a remarkable person, Sir Pete has taken the only correct path to recovery. Pete, I'll keep your example in mind when the cast comes off tomorrow and the rehab begins. The fun is about to begin.” 8:47:02 AM 10/28/02 No pain no gain! “Good luck Geo!! Give 'em heck!!!” 8:59:21 AM 10/28/02 “I'll give it more than that. Thanks Tango. I plan to hit the canal in the next couple of weeks, if only for a little bit. That will be one small victory, but it will feel great. The danger will be over-doing it. I did that Friday and Saturday, but managed to rest yesterday. The plan is to push the envelope outward at every chance, but not bust through just yet. My Mom finally is recuperating from her long illness. She got her cell phone, so she drove down to McDonalds for a pancake breakfast Sunday to celebrate regaining her freedom. Her longest drive in two years. We've had to push her to exercise; she hates it. But she's reached a milestone at long last.” 9:22:30 AM 10/28/02 “As planned, I ran for the first time in 4+ months at noon today. Two half-mile jogs sandwiched by 10 minutes of easy walking before, after, and between. Felt weird, but at least I didn't seem to have any pain, certainly none like I was having when I stopped running. Now, assuming the pain stays away, I have to re-learn how to run with a body that is not the same shape it was a year ago. Periodic updates to follow!!” 3:18:00 PM 10/28/02 “Great Marty. So there is life after rehab. As of tomorrow I will be on my way!” 6:34:19 PM 10/28/02 “Good luck Geo! Minor point re: me (and it IS all about me, you know): I consider myself to have just STARTED rehab today. I won't be doing and "real" running for several months, probably.” 6:39:13 PM 10/28/02 “BTW, now that I'm running again, I just know aero's going to call me up and offer me a scholarship, despite my age....” 6:40:22 PM 10/28/02 I'm a biped again - WOOOHOOOOO! “Just got back from getting the cast off. I have to schedule therapy, and on Dec. 3 get my final visit to the orthopedist. Maybe I can come off the injured reserve list by then. The ankle and foot are sore as all get out, but I am able to walk on it, ... just slower than normal. Like a friend says, "I'm kicking, but not high!"” 11:43:36 AM 10/29/02 “What, you think you can sneak in ahead of me for one of aero's scholarships? Think twice, dude!” 12:11:27 PM 10/29/02 “Relax martyb. If you saw me walking you'd laugh your arse off and never would make it for Aero's scholarship. You are quite safe if you are running already. Take your time. No rush. HeHeHeHe!” 1:40:02 PM 10/29/02 “OK beet-man, I challenge you to a race, mano a mano, pierna a pierna, gimp to gimp. Winner gets a scholie to run for aero. (Do ya' think we need to let aero know about this?) GO!!!” 2:39:46 PM 10/29/02 “Go? Yer kiddin, aintcha? Ya gotta be kiddin. I'm too damn sore to go anywhere. Still have two trips down to the laundry room. Dang foot is throbbing worse than the day I broke it. You take the scholarship.” 2:43:02 PM 10/29/02 “Ha! I knew I could beat ya! Note to self: part of winning is careful selection of the competition.... Sounds like this thread took two steps forward and one back, though....” 2:46:04 PM 10/29/02 Jump to Page << prev
