“Wow Chili, how was the hike out?! What'd you do for it?

Hope you heal up quick!”

Took two Aleve, laced my boot up tight and gritted my teeth for a mile.

At one point, I thought I was going to pass out.

Dang, now I really feel bad. Many moons ago I broke my ankle jumping out of a chopper on an airmobile training exercise. Granted I was 19 at the time but I remember having to hoof it out (okay I did have some morphine on board). BUT wow...sorry as heck dude.

Jeeze Chili. That bites! Get better soon. How'd it happen?

I broke a big toe about three weeks ago on a week-long backpack. Slipped off a rock fishing and pile drove the toe into the rocky stream bottom. BUt I was only a one day hike from the trailhead and was able to limp it out.

I go to the orthopaedic clinic tomorrow. This mother#&%!$er hurts way more now than it did over the weekend. I had to get up at 6 AM and pop a vicodin. I was in misery.

I told them no more vicodin. Once I found out that was Hydrocodone, I wouldn't take anymore of it. Bad vibes on that stuff lately.

Anyway, they put me in a walking cast and told me to walk on it for a week. He wants to xray it again Tuesday. If it is a stable fracture (and he thinks it is) he will keep me in the walking cast which is cool because I can take it off to get in the shower.

If it is not stable, he will probably put screws in it.

Soooo, I am just limping around to find out if I am going to get "screwed" by the doctor.

Hey Chili, there are great vinyl and rubber thingies that fit over casts and are water proof. They work great and my insurance covered mine. I could actually go swimming with it!

Good news. The leg will not require surgery. The fracture is stable an the ankle joints all look good. I must have been in some pain at the ER, because I sure thought they said tibia. It is actually the fibula. Saw the fracture today and while it wasn't pretty, at least it is stable.

I stay in the walking boot until after the first of the year. He evaluates me again on the 3rd of January and said that he thought mid March was a good estimate on when I could plan a real backpacking trip. he said that with some luck, I might be able to take a short trip in February.

When I see him again, I can plan the "chili returns to hiking trip"!

I don't know what set it off, but bygod, I have hurt more in the last 24 hours than I have since I broke the damn thing.

It has been constant pain and as much as I haven't wanted to, I have had to take the pain killers.

Well wishes to you, Chili. And welcome to community of folks who find it difficult to stand and/or walk. At least you still have a chance of healing. The rest of us, most likely, will have continued troubles and even have to limp on our paths to Heaven or Hell.

Does a bloody nose that won't stop count? I won't gross you out with the details but it's a doozie and still going. I just peeked at the washcloth I'm pinching my nose shut with and a 5 inch long chunk of clot slid out.
