Why would you apply heat Sticks? That is bad advice.

Ice the first 24 to 48 hours of an acute injury...unless you are doing doing rehab or hard physical exercise.

Then heat...not hot heat just warm heat...there is a difference and soaking your feet and ankles in warm epsom salt solutions is wonderful.

Warm heat helps loosen and increase blood flow before exercise...ice afterward.

Good advise from one that has been there and done it.

epsom salt bath sounds wonderful, think i'll go shopping later.

i'd love to be completely off of it, but life doesn't work that way. no one has taken turbo more than 50ft out the door since i did on thursday night when i sprained my ankle. i think i'm going to try the dog park today with him today, he is desperately in need of exercise. i really pray that there are dogs there for him to play with because obviously i'm not running, LOL!

the ankle is about the same, it looks worse at night of course.

i'm getting up and getting ready to take turbo out to the dog park now, see ya all later. i do think i will wrap it this time as he sometimes pulls me when he gets nervous. then i'll stop and buy a hard brace for the times i have to walk like this.

I don't know anything about sprained ankles but I can tell you that when I broke my ankle the damage to the ligaments and tendons was worse than the break.

It took a really long time for those to heal. Additionally, it seems as though my achilles tendon shrank (is that a word?) so that I still cannot flex the foot as much as before and going downstairs is a different experience too even now three years later.

Treat the sprain seriously to avoid long term damage.

Sandy, there's such limited blood supply to tendons and ligaments that they take MUCH longer to heal than bones and muscles. That's why ice is such a great thing for such injuries....brings massive amounts of fresh blood to the area quickly. I had the same experience w/ my tendinitis. 6 months off my foot.
Some great massage work would help your Achilles tendon.

Sass is right about the blood supply, that's why they have a long healing time. i don't know if you can stretch out an Achilles tendon or not, but i would talk to a physical therapist about it because if you can, it would definitely be worth the effort.

i'm back. the joy on turbo's face was worth the little pain i suffered. he ran and ran and ran. no little dogs to play with and the big dogs were huge and very boisterous, so we stayed on the little dog side. eventually turbo decided to race up and down the fence with one of the big dogs on the other side, they both had a great time with this. then he and i played fetch for another hour.

i picked up a brace. they didn't have a hard one, just one with velcro and elastic. it's not very tight, but it's better than nothing. this is more than the usual twist, but not anywhere near as bad as that one sprain. i'll live, LOL! darn, i forgot the epsom salts. crap.

i have a couple VA appts in a row and i get to spend 24 hours away from my family beginning tomorrow evening and completely off of my feet if i wish. this time is my favorite time, they can't piss me off. ROFL! of course if any of you want to call me, that would be very nice.

be sure to talk to a therapist before stretching your Achilles tendon. You can easily overstretch it and cause more problems than you solve.

Since I broke it three years ago I really don't think there is much more I can do to stretch it. I backpack and hike in the mountains regularly. It certainly doesn't hinder me but I do need to think of foot placement especially on trail like the Mist Trail.

Ice does not increase blood flow
http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4778472_ice-bring-swelling-down.html

http://www.drug3k.com/forum_health/Injuries/Why-do-we-put-ice-packs-on-swelling-114257.htm

http://www.pulled-muscle.com/muscle-strain/treating-muscle-pulls.php

Gentle moist heat before exercise to loosen and increase blood flow and ice afterward reduce blood flow and swelling. Ice no more than 15 minutes because it can cause cold injuries to soft tissue.

I can almost guarantee a soak in a warm epsom salt solution will make it feel better and help reduce swelling. Do this when you know you are done for the day with all of your activities.

from http://www.spinalhealth.net/ice.html
Grandma's Magic Home Remedy - Epsom Salts!

This is one of the best things you can and should do for your body. And it costs next to nothing. Soak in a hot bath with about 2 handfuls of Epsom salts added to the water. Epsom salts have magnesium in them and this helps draw inflammation out of the muscles, joints, etc. This may be the one exception to the "Always ice when you have a new injury" rule. I often recommend a hot bath with Epsom salts after a long run when the muscles are just aching. I also recommend soaking once a week as a treat to your legs, just to keep them happy!

Epsom salts can also be used more locally. A bucket of water works well to soak a sore plantar fascia, a face cloth soaked in water with Epsom salts can be wrapped around a sore Achilles tendon to decrease swelling. If you use the face cloth method, use a sauce pan with a half handful of Epsom salts, soak the cloth , wring it out, place it over the sore spot, wrap a plastic bag around it to keep in the heat, and then wrap a towel or tensor bandage around everything to hold it in place. It works wonders!

Sprains are not muscle injuries. And yes, ice constricts vessels....and then what happens when the ice is removed? Magically, blood rushes in to warm the area and you get a bit extra, along w/ reduction in swelling and pain. Not gonna argue about it. Ultimately Pamela should consult a Dr, not Sticks or Sassafras (or Ehow.com).

fell on my damn tailbone in my hockey game Sunday... hurts like hell to walk. I'm just hoping I'm all mended up in time for Zion in a couple weeks.

My wife bruised her tailbone pretty bad in Vegas a few years back (we were going down an escalator and the horrendously trashed dude in front of us fell at the bottom, there was a pileup and we all ended up on the ground) and was in pretty moderate pain from it for a few weeks.

Fingers crossed

My wireless computer has created a maze of wires on my bedroom floor. Two weeks ago, while trying to get to the bathroom during the night, I tripped on the wires and tore off one toenail. I had to get medical attention from a doctor.

Euro hike - The battery only lasts an hour. So I hsve a wire connecting the computer to an extension cord. The cord is long and has several clumps on the floor. I tripped on one of those clumps.

BTW, The computer was a gift from an x-wife.

Not sure where you are hiking, but we will be in southwest Virginia this coming weekend, returning on Monday. Let me know if you need a shuttle or a ride.

Take care of yourself and tell Karma she is not a real thing. Our futures are, for the most part, determined by the decisions we make today.
