You're our rock. You CAN'T go down. Say it's just gas or something. Criminy, the way everybody is dropping, I'm afraid to go out the door.” 7:09:47 PM 11/04/02 martyb “that's good, that extra muscle will start eating the weight you don't want in no time” 7:20:59 PM 11/04/02 “Awww quit your whining...at least your not dead and rotting!” 1:34:18 PM 11/06/02 “Are you Violin's left foot?” 1:47:08 PM 11/06/02 “No, i we do not smell THAT bad Lyn” 1:48:45 PM 11/06/02 “Oh thank goodness!” 1:51:25 PM 11/06/02 “Tomorrow morning I report to Gunny for my tortu, ... er, ... therapy, that's what it's called, therapy.” 2:56:33 PM 11/06/02 “good luck geobeet!” 4:05:29 PM 11/06/02 What? No Gunny? “So instead of a Marine Corps DI I get a pretty woman who is pregnant and afraid of hurting me. Is this a crazy, mixed-up world or not? Twice a week for the next four weeks we do such fun things as stretch the foot every which way but loose, plus a series of stretching exercises to do several times a day every day. I think most of the trouble I've been having has been due to taut muscles. Getting them loose this morning seems to have helped, at least with freedom of movement. Also cold compress to help the swelling go down. I think this will go quicker than I thought. One of the stated goals for therapy is to get back on the trail. Wooohooooooo! Spirit Coyote, there is life after broken bones. Hang in there and remember, I'm pulling for you. We're all in this together.” 9:17:44 AM 11/07/02 “Good deal Geo!” 9:59:35 AM 11/07/02 “Too bad about the therapist, Geo - woulda made for lots of good stories. Wait a minute! "Pretty woman...pregnant...hurting me..." Naaaaaahhhhh....” 10:18:15 AM 11/07/02 “Alas and alack, it's not THAT kind of therapy.” 10:46:04 AM 11/07/02 “Glad to hear you got a kind nurse. Stretching exercises can hurt like he11 after the cast is removed. Been their, done that. Good luck. I got a "kind" nurse the inital trip for my kidney stones. I was in intense pain so the Doc ordered a pain shot. It had to be given in the hip (BIG injection). A little "kind" very cute student nurse that didn't want to hurt me came in to shoot me. As I was leaning bare a$$ed on a table, she carefully marked the target with tape, made several inital approaches before she finially stuck me. Due to her delaying, I was surprised and jumped, pulling the needle out. The poor kid was embarrassed and quickly left the room saying something about finding a smaller needle. An older less "kind" nurse can in later and proceeded to drive that injection home. Ouch. Anyway, hope your therapy produces results.” 10:46:05 AM 11/07/02 “In my 25 years of working in healthcare, cute PT's far outnumber DI types.” 10:55:05 AM 11/07/02 “There were male therapists there as well, but they also seemed to be gentle types. Stove, I don't think I'll be trading places with you anytime soon. What I've been through has been a piece of cake compared to your journey.” 11:02:09 AM 11/07/02 “Thanks Geo, but you will still be on this list and I hope I will be off it in a week or so. Maybe even go backpacking in a couple of weeks.” 11:12:06 AM 11/07/02 “Good for you. I won't be more than a few weeks behind you in coming off the list. I will be doing day hikes when the weather permits over the winter.” 11:16:24 AM 11/07/02 “Thank god StoveStomper has stopped using the phrase, "stent removal."” 11:23:05 AM 11/07/02 Martyb “That comes Monday! I'll be sure I email you a blow by blow account. :)” 11:25:26 AM 11/07/02 “Hopefully that was an accidentally poor choice of words. Can't wait for that trip report....” 11:30:29 AM 11/07/02 “if it dun get any worse... I just cut the tip of my left middle finger while cutting fabric for a quilt, down to the bone....ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!” 10:32:01 AM 11/08/02 Spirit “Dang girl! You keep this up and you will surpass mapleleaf for bad luck! ;)” 10:46:57 AM 11/08/02 “Hay I resemble that remark!!!! But hay I got off the list when the Dr took out that banana chip of my finger!” 10:50:07 AM 11/08/02 “Spirit: Find a straight jacket. Put it on. Lie on the bed for about a month. Report back to this thread when you get up.” 10:56:22 AM 11/08/02 “man Martyb, what is up with you? first you blow up our Yellow Bus then your putting people in straight Jackets?” 10:59:00 AM 11/08/02 “oopps ok its my turn to turn RED, Sorry, it was rosymonster (i think) hay is there room in that thing for me?” 11:00:21 AM 11/08/02 “I don't know nuttin' about no yellow bus. Clearly, Spirit Coyote needs extraordinary measures to keep her from hurting herself again. The straight jacket was my only idea....” 10:58:33 AM 11/09/02 “Well I am on this list today. For some reason my knee is inflamed. I'm hoping that it calms down soon.” 7:56:03 PM 11/09/02 Skeetah Bait too “Her knee is agravated from some of the hikes recently. The doc said no leg machines at the gym or hiking for 2 weeks. 1 week to go... Lots of ice and little red pills ;p” 8:24:59 PM 11/09/02 “Sorry to hear that, UK. I hope that her knee feels better soon. I know that my kneecaps don't sit quite right, and I have to be careful not to have a lot of side to side movement, but I haven't had the inflammation for about 15 years. I'll have to be more careful. I forgot my hiking pole last weekend and I'm sure that contributed to the problem.” 8:37:07 PM 11/09/02 “What thread was that straightjacket on? Oh well, it's around here somewhere. A roll of ducttape will do in a pinch. Noooo, not a roll with ducttape, a roll OF ducttape. And sharp implements are Off Limits, okay? (who knew QUILTING was so dangerous?) I don't know anything about stents. I had an experience with 'catheter removal' about 10 years ago when my appendix turned on me, that ungrateful SOB...” 9:32:41 PM 11/09/02 On the trail again, wooohooooo “It was more a moral victory than a hike, but managed 2.2 miles on the Delaware Canal towpath today. Good day to be out. Warm, breezy, fall in the air, river up to normal level from recent rains. The ankle is sore and swollen, but it is worth it. I'll spend the afternoon and evening with it elevated and on ice. Stopped off for cider and apples on the return. Mmmmmm. To those just recently injured, hang in there. It's a long road back, but you will make it. Laugh a little, and keep a positive attitude. That is good medicine.” 1:38:09 PM 11/10/02 “I did it again! :( Maybe i should stay in bed and keep all my doors locked... i was trying to take a stroll with my crutches and didnt get far...the steep driveway was plastered with wet leaves from our recent storm and i slipped!!! :O well, my tail bone hurts and its yet another reminder that 2 feet are better then one!” 4:54:34 PM 11/10/02 “Ouch! Be careful on those crutches. I never did get used to them, although if I had space I could get going for short sprints on them. You can do more damage than you already have. Keep that in mind.” 9:30:17 PM 11/10/02 “This is what happens when you don't take my advice. tsk, tsk, tsk,.... Somebody go lock that woman up!!” 9:09:30 AM 11/11/02 “I suspect that could only be accomplished at great personal risk, like ending up with a crutch stuck in the ear or another convenient body cavity.” 9:32:38 AM 11/11/02 “I suspect that you are right Geo.” 9:39:17 AM 11/11/02 “Heh Heh, me and my big mouth. That would have been fun to watch.” 10:37:37 AM 11/11/02 “Crutches are not fun...used them last year when I pulled a muscle down hill skiing....hummmm....not another year of that? My daughter asked if we were gonna whimp out this year skiing and trying snowboarding.....I said NO WAY, ain't no way any of this is gonna stop me!!! Maybe skiing, but not too sure on the boarding, though....don't feel like getting hurt anymore.” 1:26:10 PM 11/11/02 “Getting hurt sucks, no question. There are reasonable precautions and there is the stupidity of changing your life for fear of an injury. I hope I'm a bit more careful on wet rocks and logs, but I expect I will go down again one day, hopefully with better results. Resuming hiking was never the question, but when. Yesterday was the first tentative walk, ... more to follow. In the next month I want to get up to the AT, hopefully when the leg feels more comfortable. Like yesterday's walk, even a couple of miles will be a moral victory. By spring I should be back to my normal reckless self again.” 1:31:35 PM 11/11/02 “Well, I'm looking over this thread again... and I'm wondering whether hiking is really this dangerous, or are we just a bunch of spazmatics? Keep a Low Profile, Spirit! (at least you won't have as far to fall!)” 1:35:00 PM 11/11/02 “Being born is the greatest cause of death there is. Living is hazardous to your health. Nobody gets out of this world alive. Once you accept all that, you just have fun in between the bumps and bruises while you wait around to make your exit. It will come soon enough; the trick is to look back on a life well lived when the time comes. As for the bumps and bruises, we just put our time in and wait impatiently to get back on the trail. Hiking has its risks, but do does driving to work every day. The broken leg camping was at least earned. The broken rib from a car crash was not fun at all. And there are the germs that we catch at work or our kids bring home from school, any of which can put us in a hospital for an extended stay. You can't live life in a bubble, and if you could you would quickly bust out.” 1:44:05 PM 11/11/02 “Well put Geobeet....doesn't it suck when our bodies get older, but the rest of you refuses to. Don't make me do it!!! I don't wanna grow up, I will never wear a tie, or a serious expression, or a moment of a sigh, cuse growing up is awfuller than.....” 6:06:03 PM 11/11/02 “I'm crowding 60 and still don't see any percentage in growing up. I'm just a slower kid than I used to be.” 7:02:04 PM 11/11/02 “Went back to the Doc Monday. Let's just say I'm still on this list for awhile. The Mt. Rogers trip is no longer an option. Go back for focused x-rays Wed. and then stent removal or another lithotripsey (#3). StoveStomper-the home of the never ending kidney stone.” 8:40:59 AM 11/12/02 “Sorry to hear that StoveStomper! That sucker's gotta go eventually. Geobeet -- that's why one of my all-time heroes is Jonathan Winters.” 8:58:02 AM 11/12/02 “EEPS! I just found out it is a pain in the ass to ride public transportation with a broken foot, on crutches and trying to carry a guitar all at the same time!” 9:49:55 AM 11/12/02 “Geo - glad to hear you're getting closer to getting off this thread! StoveStomper - there you go saying "stent removal" again.... Sorry to hear you are still "here" - hang in there.... Spirit - your experiences w/crutches are an inspiration to avoid getting hurt again!! Me - I'm typing this while sitting on one of those big rubber exercise balls, as recommended by my chiropractor to help w/my hip problem. More updates to follow! (can life get any more exciting!?)” 10:23:00 AM 11/12/02 Jump to Page << prev
