Little River Canyon, Alabama

“Anybody hike Little River Canyon, Alabama near Fort Payne? I'm thinking of going there next week but want to backpack and can't find any info on the web re trails. Are there backcountry trails, especially along the rim, and if so how would you rate them? Any info appreciated.”

“My understanding is that all of the "trails" are in the canyon. You aren't supposed to camp in the canyon either. It amounts to one long bushwhack because there really aren't any trails. I have never attempted to hike there, so this is just info I have been told.”

“Along the eastern rim, the road is the route along the western side.

The canyon bottom is not just a bushwack, its a rock hop as well, many boulders are the size of houses and cars and get moved around by the river when it floods.

Once in, the canyon has few exit points, take a rope so when you climb out, you can leave the pack at the bottom to haul up when you reach the rim.

Don't let this put you off, just plan for a rough hike, carry as little weight as possible, and have fun...One more thing, the nights in the canyon will be COLD. In July, I nearly froze because I thought I could get by with a ponch and a liner...WRONG!”
