I've done some sewing,... you need to use a synthetic thread. Any thread with cotton will shrink in different ratio to the non-cotton fabric. Depending on the size of the tear, you might also look for "iron-on" patches, but you have to be selective in matching the patch material with the original fabric.

Nylon Repair Tape
Repair tape is sold in the camping section in wal-mart...peal and press...used to repair tents, parkas etc...put it on the inside of the material if the color doesn't match...I've used it to repair small burn holes in tarps and sleeping bags made when sparks fly from campfires...hold up in the wash pretty good, if it comes lose...add a new patch.

I am going after work to a thrift store. It's a hit or miss kinda deal.

I used to use - and still have - ripstop nylon repair tape, but now I pretty well just use duct tape. Duct tape even stays on (my sleeping bag) in an industrial, front loading washing machine. If you do want to sew, use dental floss - nothing beats it. I learned that trick from Horace Kephart's 'Camping and Woodcraft' first published in 1916. Of course, it was silk back then. I have an Eddie Bauer Karakoram down parka that I bought in 1974. It has nylon and duct tape patches all over. I sew the patches around the edge with floss and intend to take the parka caribou hunting in the sub-Arctic at Christmas.

Reduce, re-use, repair, recycle is my motto.

I hit thrift/secondhand stores in Missoula, MT two summers ago. I scored crampons and an ice axe. $25 each. Either is $75 retail. Not bad... both were in tip top shape.

I've bought fleece at thrift stores, too. Fleece is next to nothing at those places.

I've bought other used clothing online, but I won't get into that right now.
heh!

I have to check those thrift stores. Someone at the TC2 told me to check marshals (think it was bbinkley). Never thought of that. I will this tomorrow and see what I'll find. I will probably be out of luck because those columbia people don't seam to like hiking, thus won't have any gear or clothing that they are giving to thrift stores.

rosey,
i live near 3 thrift stores and i check em out almost everyday. My last score was nearly 2 months ago(officio shorts)so the scores are relatively sparse.
What surprises me is that the hiking clothing is almost always new (seconds,i guess).
