Which is better???
For undergarments, which is drier and warmer, silk or synthetics?

I use the patagonia mid-weight capilene as a base layer. This stuff works great. It's pretty thin. I hiked out 10 miles in about 30 degree weather in the snow/sleet/rain and I just wore the shirt out and it kept me warm. You could see the moisture come to the top of the fabric and stand on top. It wicks very well.

They make some nylon stuff that is as thin as pantyhose for a base layer. It just looked to thin for me. That's why I recommend the mid-weight..Oh and the fleece-weight is too much unless you are going to be in sub-zero conditions.

As a female, I can't tell because the sports bras don't wick enough perspiration away. I might as well pour a bucket of water down the front and be done with it.

Silk gets saggy and tends to fall apart in the wash at the end of a season. The new synthetics don't stink if you keep them clean with regular washing.

Get your filthy paws off my silky draws
Its all about synthetics for me. The silkies that I have tried on in the past have always been to confining and lack the support need. And I just hate having to shop the granny section in order to find to right size.

I tried silk but don't like the feel of it and thought it was cold against my skin.
I like synthetics or wool.

I use a silk bottom sheet then a silk top sheet then a blanket no special kind then a down quilt this combination always keeps me warm and I can remove or add layers accordingly. I hope this helps.

I've been using Capilene for about 10 years and love it. Wouldn't use any other synth. That said, I picked up a pair of silk cheapies from STP about 2 years ago and I like them. They are sooo lightweight and dry in a flash (great for washing if your're gonna be out a while and on the go all the time). So, my general principle is bring 'em along b/c the weight is negligible and at a minimum, I can sleep in them. They layer nicely also.

I don't think the silk wicks as well as synth. Silk is more work to clean because you can't throw them in the dryer. They shrink like you wouldn't believe. My wife threw my last set in the dryer and they came out sized for a skinny 8-year-old.

I think they sold me on capilene. Now I have to find a place that offers what I want in capilene. Sounds like it oughta be some kind of pasta, doesn't it?

Capellini?

I don't know if anyone else makes capilene or if its only a Patagonia thing, but I've been using the same set (Patagonia)pretty extensively for nearly a decade and it's still going strong (except for where I caught a crampon on the calf of a pair). Shell out the extra bucks and get Patagonia. It's worth it.

Found it
REI has the Patagonia mid-weight capilene tops and bottoms for $81 total. When my stupid employer gets my back paycheck to me, that will take care of part of it.

Thanks for the help bbinkley rosey, twig, violin, briar, gremlin, nivram, and trolls.

Looks like a warm dry winter with which to rehab. Less than a week to go, knock on wood.

Geobeet, darlin', they might have the Capilene tops and bottoms at the EMS 20% sale, so if you get a chance, check there first.
