dude, its across all cultures, (I would say it is more a subculture) and not just specific to Michael Vick's. Crash was arguing that we should excuse or at least recognize it is a cultural thing for them similar to the way Muslim culture mistreats women. Are you also saying that women are like dogs?

I never said that there wasn't a culture of dogfighting. I just said that there is no comparison between a subculture of dogfighting that the majority of society finds disgusting and a society that has culture supported by laws that subjugate women.

Do you think that the two are a fair comparison?

Dogfighting is not a cultural thing while muslim mistreatment of women is.

actually, it doesn't. It is exactly what I meant.

There is sub culture that enjoys dogfighting, but it is not supported by the vast majority of the people in the US. We have laws against it that even bring down the rich and powerful.

Mistreatment of women in Muslim countries is not a subculture, it is a MAJOR factor in their culture. Their laws protect rapists and even encourage it against their enemies.

So, I have not misrepresent what Crash was saying. He asked why is it ok to to take in account the Muslim religion when a large group of muslim men rape a woman and not take into account the "culture" that allows dogfighting when discussing Michael Vick's case. I say that they are not even remotely similar enough to allow a comparison between a poorly supported subculture and entire religion. The other alternative is that he is comparing women to dogs. Which I don't think they can be compared equally either.

LOL, come on. There is no one on this site that actually thinks Crash thinks women are like dogs. Everyone knows that part is a joke or at the worst a misstatement. I think its more that he knows there is no comparison between the two issues he mentioned and refuses to acknowledge that.

hyway, its more like you missed the point of what i was saying, and refuse to admit it, even to yourself

i was smirking at the way conservatives say we shouldnt "blame the culture" in the michael vick case, but when it came to the muslim rape case, they were quick to "blame the culture". why is that hard for you to understand?

my position is that we shouldnt excuse either case, and hold the individuals responsible. vick and the muslims should know right from wrong, despite the cultural influences surrounding them

crash, you just stated exactly what I said you said. So we are both in agreement on what you said. I am saying that the two cultures have nothing in common to base a comparison on so I disagree with your premise. Why is that hard for you to understand? It was then that I asked you, since there was nothing in common between the two cultures, if you were instead comparing women to dogs.

I also said that I didn't see anyone NOT blaming the men ALONG with their culture. So that part of your claim doesn't hold water either.
hyway

i wasnt comparing the two cultures. jesus christ. however, the COMMON ELEMENT is the mistreatment of X, as well as the fact that youre dealing with culture/sub-culture.

when youre making an analogy, there only needs to be one or two common elements.

here. ill draw a diagram

LARGER SOCIETAL INFLUENCE .....VICTIM

Islamic chauvanism..............................women

Ghetto dog-fighting culture..................dogs

CONSERVATIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS MICHAEL VICK

dont blame the culture

CONSERVATIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS MUSLIMS

blame the culture
--------------------------------------------

i just think its funny that we're supposed to blame the culture in one case but not the other.

I also said that I didn't see anyone NOT blaming the men ALONG with their culture

i'll give you that. you got one thing right

crash, you are so wrong. Just live up to it and move on. How can you not see the difference between a cultural action that is supported by a culture's law, religion, media, and most of its population, and a cultural action that is only supported by a minority of a minority class, is punished by law, is against nearly every religious and societal creed, is repudiated by the media, and shocks the majority of the population when they discover it?

I only did that because you are so damn cute when you get riled. Besides you were totally refusing to see my point that the two situations can't be compared. Then it just got funny, because you knew I was trolling you with the women are dogs argument, but you kept swallowing more line. I was really surprised to see you getting so upset because there is no way anyone would believe that you were really arguing that. But by then you were getting ugly with me and its just not my nature to let go at that point.

Like I said on another thread, most times this place is all fun and games not to be taken seriously, until someone puts an eye out :)

To bad bb didn't know this at FYAO
http://www.livescience.com/mysteries/071218-tongue-flagpole.html

Will Your Tongue Really Stick to a Frozen Flagpole?
December 19, 2007
The next time someone triple-dog dares you to stick your tongue to a frozen metal pole — don't. Your tongue will be joined to the pole, and you'll have plenty of time to ponder the thermal conductivity of metal while you await the rescue squad.

Your tongue is covered with moisture, which beings to freeze if its temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Your body counteracts the freezing by pumping warm blood to your tongue.

Heat from your blood warms the moisture through a process called conduction. Heat energy from the blood excites atoms in your tongue. The atoms absorb energy and vibrate. The more they vibrate, the more their temperatures increase. This incites vibrations in neighboring atoms, which take the energy and pass it up the line like a hot potato and eventually warms the surface moisture.

So why is the Fire Department on its way?

"It's because of the high thermal conductivity of the pole," explains Frank J. DiSalvo, director of the Cornell Center for a Sustainable Future and co-director of the Cornell Fuel Cell Institute. "The metal is a much better conductor than your tongue (up to 400 times more powerful). The metal takes heat faster than your body can replenish it."

The atoms in solid metals are packed tightly and transfer thermal energy more readily. They also have free electrons that boost conductivity. Free electrons are free to move from atom to atom. The electrons absorb heat energy and move through the flagpole, stirring up other atoms.

As your tongue touches the flagpole, the moisture on your tongue is robbed of heat. The temperature of the moisture drops. Water freezes inside tiny pores and surface irregularities on your tongue and the pole. You're stuck.

So now your thinking, "Maybe if I just pull hard it will come off." Yes, it will — a piece of your tongue, that is.

Kent Sperry is a 911 dispatcher at a place where people know about cold and snow — Boulder, Colorado. He offers a less painful alternative, assuming you happen to have the necessary remedy at hand: "Pour warm water on the area where the tongue meets the pole, and the tongue should come free."
