For all my food fans and critics
As I hike with more and more people, it seems like people are in awe of my food bag and cooler and the contents inside of each. So, I have decided to start a thread with updates each trip as to what I will packing this week to eat and drink.

My last trip consisted of a 12 pack of miller lite in the plastic bottles,8lbs of ice, 2 six packs of Johnsonville Cheddar Brats, a thing of squeeze parkay, strawberry cream cheese for my bagels, tortillas,a bottle of reisling auselea wine, tuna fish in a pouch(quantity 6),smuckers peanut butter and jelly with crackers(5),rice krispie treats, gummy snacks(10),Lipton Butter Noodles(3) and a couple of packets of lemon-lime gatorade. That was for about a 3 night trip.

Oh yeah, we stashed a 12 pack at the campsite for saturday night. That way we would have beer when we got to camp the next evening.

Have you ever done a trip where beer was not on the menu?

binkley, what does your pack weigh? How far do you carry it? That looks like a car camping food list to me.

At the Jordan River trip, his pack looked bigger than him. It was huge. But, he carried it and he never complained. And, he was one happy man at camp each night.

Brats smell AWESOME when you're eating a dehydrated meal.

Damn son, your food alone weighs more than my pack plus gear.

He'll blow his knees out, by age 30. I checked the Jordan River thread and didn't see and distances or elevations. You sure he's not car camping with lizs?

Nope. No car camping. First evening we hiked 'bout 3 miles. Day 2 was about 10-11 and day 3 was about the same as day 2.
Not much elevation gain cause this is Michigan. But, there's some pretty good hills.

well, he ain't kidding around...
got any sauerkraut? can't have a brat without sauerkraut, man!
You are the epitome of smoothin' it instead of roughin' it. You still don't compare to the dudes I ran into at Laurel Gap shelter. They had pumpkin pie, roasted corn, potatoes, marinated steak, boneless pork chops, boneless skinless chickie breasts, calamata olives, Canadian Mist, and apple brandy. They gave us bites and sips of everything while we were feasting on.... rice.

I saw a man get off the ferry for N. Manitou Island w/ a whole watermelon. Talk about heavy. He actually carried it in his arms while carrying a pack on his back.

Unfortunately sauerkraut is not on the menu this week or will it be on the menu any week. Don't have the extra room in my food bag nor does my taste buds agree with that.

Walkindude-The answer to your question is no. The menu always includes a few miller lite's for camp after a long hike. One of the finer pleasures I get from being in the backcountry. You should try it sometime. It's well worth the extra weight and your pack the second day is extremely lighter.

Have you read my book?

LOL!
Y'all need to hike with Towndawg - he is amazing! His pack is huge - i think its over 7000 cu. He'll make you a pita pocket with barbecued chicken (pulled off the bone with his own hands the night before), lettuce, tomato, and mayonaise. I've seen him pull a stick of butter outta his pack in the winter!

I'm glad to see you've gotten rid of the weight from the squeeze parkay and are trying butter buds. Now, get rid of the snack packs and take instant pudding with dry milk already added, mix it up in your coffee mug. MY GOSH MAN, DON'T YOU EAT ANY VEGETABLES? ;)

Sass, Veggies is not a high priority when on the trail. If I wanted to eat veggies I would still be living at home with my parents. Part of growing up is not having to eat veggies.

j/k I actually get them at Cracker Barrell all the time.

I couldn't agree with you more. That's why you eat and drink on the trail, burn all the food up from hiking.

I like food but not that much. I whip up some pretty good food without all that weight. B is a good example of what I have said about pack weight. The trip is suppose to be fun so you take what is needed for it to be fun for you. B is no Spartan but it sounds like he enjoys his pack trips. That alone justifies the weight. Good for bb.

Yes I do enjoy my trips. Setting up camp and preparing a meal is one of my favorite parts of the weekend. Pack weight is definately something to be considered when going on a trip. But I agree with you mtn gal, if packing more weight in the backcountry without complaining gives me the little things I enjoy than it is all worth it to me.
Example:
I take a thermarest with me and I have never even slept on it. I use it as my camp chair. Thanks for the support.

I was wondering the same thing. Although there was a place about a half a mile from where I live that one could just take a container in and have it filled with beer. Had signs on the outside of the building saying the same. Ran into someone who live quite aways away and knew about the place. Never had the chance (or desire) to do that. It was "Gil's Beer."

Repeat after Unca Gremlin.
Put aluminium wine flask into sleeping bag to thaw wine at least to slush. Fire up the headlamp. Stick head and shoulders out of bag(s) making sure to keep your elbows on the mattress. Without taking off your poly liner gloves, fire up the whisperlite and pour in some water then keep adding snow. Empty freeze dried food packet into oversized, insulated cup. Pour in boiling water and screw the top on the cup. Add more snow so that the water is not uncomfortably hot, pour it into the Nalgene and put it into the sleeping bag. Retrieve the wine and shake some onto you buddy's hand and your own. Scoop the food out of the cup with your LEXAN spoon and eat the wine. Read and talk and go to sleep the sleep of the godly.

Failing this, my favourite trail meal (I posted this on another threa) is hard salami, peanut butter kept in an inner pocket and pita bread knee-deep in snow, hiding behind a rock out of the wind.

Still TunaBoy to me....
He used to ry and go lighter. On a trip with hem he actually didn't take beer but Lime Vodka and mixed it with Cherry Sundrop. That be one 5th of Vodka and two liter bottles of cherry Sundrop.

I agree with him on being comfortable on the trail. And KatyBug will witness that he DOES pick up his cig butts. AttaBoy TunaBoy, make me proud!!!!
