Hey Matt...regarding trolls

“Greetings, I've posted under a couple of aliases, but never typed a hurtful statement - always just trying to be funny at no one's expense. Also, none of my "aliases" mimick someone else's handle. I hope that that kind of "trolling" can remain, but I understand it might be tricky to weed out what is good and bad. Just my 2 cents....”

“Some of the trolls/torrls are malicious but most are not. Whatever happened to creativity? And haven't you ever heard of 'buyer beware'? If anyone gets fooled by a torrl it's because they weren't observent. And if they let themself be drawn into an argument with a troll then they have only themself to blame. After all, it was their decision to make. I've been fooled a couple of times but I didn't go running to Matt. I'm not a child that needs to be protected and sheltered in this world. Maybe others are. So be it.

I think Matt does a fine job of allowing this board to run its own course. There must to be times when that's not easy. There have been times when we have all skirted the limits in one way or another and yet are able to continue posting.

I also think Matt does an extremely good job of correcting those that go too far. He enforces the Terms of Participation but he can't be omniscient and delete every violation as it occurs. If I see something I can't ignore/overlook/live with, I send him an email about it. His email addy is at the bottom of the screen and it always has been. And his response is usually swift and appropriate.

I think a lot of the life on this board would be lost without some of the wit and creativity that is expressed best through fictional personnas (trolls). Of course, the malicious trolls should burn for all eternity in a sulpherous lake of fire.”

Actually trying to guess who the trolls are is fun, to me anyway, although it is maddening when they don't come clean and reveal themselves. Of course some people get insulted when they are wrongly guessed to be the troll, and that is the risk I run when I name someone.”

“I agree with Skully that Matt does a superb job overseeing a dysfunctional group of unruly school children. When somebody does go over the top, an email to Matt usually does clear it up, and as Skully said, rather promptly.

In the past two days we have had some unfortunate things posted, and Matt says he's dealt with them.

We can draw our lessons and go on.

What happened to Lizs was blatantly wrong, as are racial slurs.

I've been had by Violin more than once. I spent a week or two arguing with Psycho Squirrel. I mentally fenced with Svetlina. That was all in fun. I'm a big boy. I can take it. But the things in the past two days just don't fit the bill.

I can tell you that if things like that appear in a newspaper, the courts will be in business for months. Libel laws could very well apply to things said on internet boards, so certain people should be advised that it is not in their best interests to be saying things like that here.

Free speech does have limits, or as we say in the business, the right of your fist ends at the point of my nose.

As I said in another post, someone has made fun of my weight. If it makes them feel better, I really don't care, but if what they say about someone else who is fighting a weight problem hurts that person, then I get angry.

We decided that we liked the appellation of rude anarchists. It does fit, but it does not give carte blanch license to hurt or libel someone, or to use racial or sexual slurs.

It goes even beyond the realm of board regulations. It's a matter of decency.

“I guess I missed something yesterday. Its unfortunate if someone wasn't playing nicely. I've trolled (and torlled) but have gone out of my way to not give the impression that I was truly the "torllee." My two principal log-ons are well known and usually are indicative of how I'm feeling at the time. Flyguy6x is the nice guy, Limpy has abit of an edge due to either his feet aching or cause life sux. Its almost like Darrell and Nigal, my hero(es!) I never intended to hurt anyone with torlling and haven't done it in over a month. I think there is (somewhere) a line differentiating teasing and being malicious. I think if everyone posted as though they may indeed meet each other it'd be a more amiable board.

“I have posted under a few different aliases only because it wouldn’t have been funny under my own name. I think Mountain Roamer’s ultralight thread was fun for a lot of people. I torlled as PedXinq and thought it was pretty funny when he retaliated by torlling me. I torlled a couple of others and have usually come clean. This was only for fun and I don’t think overdone. I think it has gone beyond fun when people get mad or hurt or is overused. Matt doesn’t have to post may aliases. I have made up a page listing all the names I have ever posted under.”
