What I Learned Over the Weekend

Here's what I learned:

Your MSR Whisperlite stove will work a lot better if you clean it now and then.

Yes, I did a pretty thorough cleaning on the thing for the first time (probably about 15-20 or so trips since I got it). It was actually quite easy. The performance was suffering a bit on the last couple of uses, so I thought I was in for a half day of taking stuff apart, forgetting how it goes back together, etc. But I only spent about a half hour, and voila!, instant roaring fire....

PS: Barry should've gotten the Series MVP....

Those "Whisper" lites are like the pits of hell. On the MTpalooza I thought that we were about to enter Satan's gates when those things got fired up.

WHAT DID YOU SAY, NG? I STILL HAVE MY STOVE ON - HUH???

Heh heh, you shoulda heard my tentmates's XGK Shaker (MSR?) on the winter trip I went on. That thing sounded like a freight train!

I didn't know MrHyde was a ventriloquist! Cool.

I take mine apart and soak the parts in new Coleman fuel, then put it back together. I use the shaker jet, in fact I retrofitted the shaker jet and have never had a problem.

mine is roaring, but the flame has a little yellow in it even with a new jet. I think I'll clean it top to bottom tonight.

I think mine had a lot of gunk inside the fuel line. The part of the cleaning where you pull out the cable, then reinsert it and use it like a pipe cleaner to scrape out the inside, then force some pressurized fuel through it, seemed to be the key step for my stove. I also let the jet soak in some clean fuel, then toothbrushed it a bit to make it like new.

PS: Nice "stove" Tilt!

Yep, that's the ticket. Did the shaker-jet retrofit and periodic white gas soak, too (with a little toothbrush action before the rinse cycle). The little bugger always fired up just like new.

I Love the roar of my Optimus 99 in the morning, except I no longer use it for backpacking.
Homemade alcohol and esbit stoves have replaced my beloved 99.

Opps, sorry about the size of that pix. I'll be more careful next time.
