THere is an account written by a black journalist of his stint in Africa. Spending time there will bleed the romanticism of being "african" american out you pretty quick. Watching his fellows africans murder each other with machetes, bricks, knives, guns and dash babies heads out on walls was what did it for him. Somewhere along the time he was watching the bodies of massacred Tutsies and Hutus floating down the river he decided that maybe just being a plain old american made some sense.

FACT: Blacks were captured by other Africans for the slave trade

FACT: It is STILL going on today

OPINION: I would venture to say that over 90% of black descedants of slaves are WAY WAY better off today than had they stayed in Africa and eked out a living there today.

FACT: While my Irish ancestors had their freedom (a big consideration, no doubt). They lived a poorer, less well fed, existence in this country, and were discriminated against for all but the most menial of jobs at every turn.

FACT: While it is true that large portions of the back people in this country are still living hand to mouth existences, in horrid conditions, with little hope (a situation that we should all continue to work towards remedying) . . .it is also TRUE that the black middle class is growing, and may be larger at this point than the black lower class.

While slavery was not pretty, and certainly cannot be condoned by today's standards, it was, for its time, a perfectly acceptable way of finding a workforce for Brazil, the Carribbean Islands, Cuba and the Southern US (as well as within the interior of Africa, as it continues today). When the US populace decided that it was no longer a morally acceptable practice, a war was fought in which huge huge numbers of white boys made the ultimate sacrifce (of their lives) to end slavery. (yes, gojo, the war between the states was about a lot more than just slavery).

What's done is done. The first clown that even attempts to get in my face about reparations is going to get an earful.

If my children have to deal with some sort of racism, I talk to them and make them understand why those people have the opinion they have.

My kids made a friend a couple years back. They got along great, but then the big sister (or brother? I forgot) came over with the little boy, my friend heard them talk and say the "n" word. The child never came over again. I confronted the parents, but of course did not get a straight answer. They moved shortly after.
