I just got sick and tired of feeling sick and tired.” 8:02:45 PM 10/28/02 Well.... “a)I did quit because I wanted to hike b)I started again because I couldn't hike (elbow injury) c)I smoke now while hiking d) I hate smoking I guess my answer does not help and trust me, it hasn't helped me either.” 8:03:22 PM 10/28/02 “I smoke cigars and I don't inhale and I spit all the time while I smoke cigars and I use a mouth wash to lower the cancer of the mouth. I love cigars. 8)” 8:05:08 PM 10/28/02 “I may should say that I do smoke, but I don't smoke while I hike with non-smokers. Hard, but I can do it, and I know how it feels if you don't smoke and hike next to a smoker. and yupp, I hate smoking too. Wish I could stop completely.” 8:07:10 PM 10/28/02 “I smoked for 10 years, and its been 20 years since I quit.” 8:12:01 PM 10/28/02 “You can stop smoking but you will never not crave another cigarette. It is willpower and mind over matter. At this point, I have no mind to matter so I smoke...hiking or not. I quit everyday and start every night. It's a neverending battle I fight everyday. I have a friend who went and got "lasered" in Canada today. Will let you know what that is all about when I hear from him. If he is still alive (LOL)” 8:13:26 PM 10/28/02 “Cigars rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8)” 8:14:24 PM 10/28/02 “Cigars last a lot longer too!!” 8:15:12 PM 10/28/02 an occasional cigar “I smoked cigarettes early in life. I did a lot of things early in life. Life is not a rehersal, but I thought it was for a long time...” 8:17:04 PM 10/28/02 “wolfeyes - have you considered hypnosis? Both my parents smoked for 30 years and quit cold turkey on the same day. My dad had no problems but my mother did, until she got hypnotized. She was a skeptic but it worked great for her. BTW, I don't smoke but every once in a while I enjoy a good cigar.” 8:18:53 PM 10/28/02 “No doubt!!!!!!!! And they taste so good! 8)” 8:19:14 PM 10/28/02 “The craving for tobacco does indeed pass with time. It took a few years, but it did pass. I got help to quit. Best $25 I ever spent. When I go to a store and somebody orders a carton of cigarettes, I love it when I hear the price. That $25 has been repaid so many times I have no idea how much I saved.” 8:21:07 PM 10/28/02 Pennsy Hiker “I have tried it all. I have tried hypnosis, the patch, the gum, the inhaler, the "don't talk to Mother for a month" plan, I have tried it all. I am waiting to see how this supposedly "laser" thing workd in Canada. That is the only thing I have not tried. Ironically, the only thing that has worked for me two times (don't ask why I started after those two times)was COLD TURKEY and WANTING to quit.” 8:22:25 PM 10/28/02 “I buy a box each week of cigars and it can cost me between $35 and $62 each week. 8)” 8:22:59 PM 10/28/02 “I smoked for 43 years, and I quit 5 years ago. The second best decision I ever made. I certainly did it for health reasons, and living in California made it much easier. It's rare to see smokers here...especially on trails.” 8:23:31 PM 10/28/02 Okay MM2003 “What was the FIRST best decision you made?(had to ask)” 8:24:57 PM 10/28/02 “Oh, that's easy. He joined TT. ;o)” 8:26:47 PM 10/28/02 “I don't smoke. I did smoke. I quit when I got pregnant. I hike regardless of smoking. It doesn't bother me if others smoke... just don't smoke in my house or my car. :)” 8:30:47 PM 10/28/02 “i smoke while i hike. but while i am around non smokers i go away from them to smoke. and i pick my cig butts off the trail.” 8:34:26 PM 10/28/02 never heard of laser.... “what does it do? I had eye laser surgery, but that's all I know about...Hmm, and a couple removed tatoos.” 8:36:15 PM 10/28/02 “I will have to let you know what the laser is/was and what it does and all that when I hear from him. No one has heard from him all day..hopefully tomorrow we will all know what went on.” 8:40:19 PM 10/28/02 “I smoked for 20 years and quit just over two years ago. I still can't believe how much better I feel.” 8:43:03 PM 10/28/02 “Quit last year after 37 years, got too hard to breath at 10,000'....way harder then quitting drugs and booze. Do miss it though.... Miss the drugs and booze too......... Damn, it's hell getting smart........” 8:43:41 PM 10/28/02 “A good Cuban is alright with me anyday! 8)” 8:55:39 PM 10/28/02 “I do not smoke; so . . . I do not smoke while hiking; and . . . I did not start because of hiking; but . . . hiking with cmb has tempted me at times.” 9:00:30 PM 10/28/02 “LMFAO!!!!!!! Not me!!!!!!!!!!! 8)” 9:02:14 PM 10/28/02 “The technique I used was a clip in the nub of the ear, which according to the anesthesiologist who did it is an accpuncture point. It took away the craving for the first week, after which the clip came out. The last thing he told the group was to remember that if we picked up a cigarette and started smoking again, "It is not Dr. Funk you will hurt by doing that silly little thing." In the first five years I craved a cigarette exactly three times. I could taste it after lighting it. And each of those times his words came back to me as clearly as if he was standing there saying it. After five years the craving has never returned. The fact is the tobacco companies manipulated the amount of nicotine in cigarettes to virtually assure addiction. I learned that years after I quit and it still made me angry. If I had not quit at that point, I surely would have after learning that.” 9:08:24 PM 10/28/02 “oh boy, give me a couple month, I am going to try this darn hypnosis thing. I just need to stop. Quit for 6 month and then I was stupid enought to start again (gained a couple pound..IDIOT!!) < 9:12:10 PM 10/28/02 “...or the accpuncture! I need help, can't do it by myself.” 9:14:43 PM 10/28/02 “Well that is not a sign of weakness. The addiction of nicotine is powerful. Getting help a good idea.” 9:16:58 PM 10/28/02 I Had To Hide Them On My Butt “I quit smoking when I started using the patch. I was up to 3 patches a day when I quit them.” 9:29:05 PM 10/28/02 “it's all in your mind. I think if you (I) really want to quit you can. I think back then when I've tried to quit I maybe just wasn't ready, and did not really want to quit. (without realizing it). anyway, just see how many pregnant women can quit from one day to the other without a problem and then after 9 month light it up again. Because they really want to, because the baby is more important. (I know about 5 of them)” 9:29:37 PM 10/28/02 “With the money spent on one pack of cigarettes a day for a month, you could buy yourself some really nice gear and have more lung power to get you to the top of a mountain. Nothing more needs to be said.” 9:33:13 PM 10/28/02 “very very true.” 9:34:43 PM 10/28/02 “buddhur. 3 patches?? did it make a difference? I mean one or 2 what's different? I tried the patch, did not do anything for me. I still could kick my self in the butt. I started to late, think I was about 23 or so. In germany that is pretty late. I was a non-smoker when everyone around me did smoke. Talking about being dumb.” 9:36:48 PM 10/28/02 “i smoke, wanna quit. smoke while hikin too.” 10:09:00 PM 10/28/02 “I like Redman chewing tobacco. I'll quit when my wife quits.” 10:35:46 PM 10/28/02 “I was up to 2 packs a day, quit 16 years ago, using the American Cancer Association plan. A 30 day program. Day 31 I tiled the bathroom floor to keep my hands buzy. Haven't smoked since, but there are times I enjoy the smell of someone lighting one up.” 11:04:50 PM 10/28/02 “I smoked from 16 to 19. I was up to a pack a day and enjoyed them thuroughly! But, I really wanted to start running and backpacking again and smoking was making me slow and sickly. I quit not because I hated the smoking part, but because I hated what it was making of me. I could actually see the changes in the mirror. Cigs were ageing me fast! Since quiting I've gone on solo hikes, lost 15 pounds of flab, and I feel great! I sell cigs at a gas station, 5 bucks a pack now. I don't even spend 5 dollars a week on lunches. Cigaretts polute, waiste, kill, go hand and hand with SUVs, and enslaves you. QUIT!” 12:13:31 AM 10/29/02 Jest Kidding “buddhur. 3 patches?? did it make a difference? I mean one or 2 what's different? Gemini 09:36:48 PM 10/28/02 I was joking 8)” 3:32:49 AM 10/29/02 “smoked 40 years have not smoked for 7 months YEA!” 4:59:32 AM 10/29/02 OK, OK!! “First, "anyway, just see how many pregnant women can quit from one day to the other without a problem and then after 9 month light it up again. Because they really want to, because the baby is more important. " THAT WAS NO EASY TASK AND I WAS HORMONAL! Talk about complicate the issue. But yes, having another life to worry about was a big motivator. Mr. ULTRAPecker, "I like Redman chewing tobacco. I'll quit when my wife quits."" Yeah, That's what my ex husband said, until I quit. He still smokes today. Stop putting your problems on your wife and do something about it!” 5:05:11 AM 10/29/02 GO BEAR!! “You can do it, jerbear! You can do it!! I might even send you a picture when you make the three month point. Yo bare! ;o)” 5:11:15 AM 10/29/02 “I quit 3 or 4 years ago after smoking for 20 years. It was the hardest thing I've ever done, but also the most rewarding. The urge to smoke does indeed go away. It just takes awhile.” 6:24:31 AM 10/29/02 “I have never smoked. I grew up watching my mother trying to quit smoking. Those shaking hands will scare you bad!” 7:04:07 AM 10/29/02 “tobacco kills you gotta get off the cigs guys” 7:14:26 AM 10/29/02 “SMOKE WEED” 7:15:06 AM 10/29/02 “ 7:23:46 AM 10/29/02 “wolfeyes...the BEST decision I ever made was to ask the bride to mattry me in 1979...then quitting smoking. The money saved and my ability to sleep on my back without gurgling is great. Every once in a while I get a notion to go get a pack, but that only lasts a heartbeat. Iused the patch in combination with the Zyban for a week. I didn't like what the Zyban did to me, so I quit without them. I even surprided myself. You have to have a really good personal reason to quit, or it is too easy to continue to smoke and continue to quit week after week. A physical exam and an honest doctor convinced me. My lungs were fine, but he said there was scar tissue from smoking, my cholesterol was very high, and I was about 55. At that point I quit and the bride and I started to hike. We still hike, only for much longer distances, and we both run to stay in shape in order to hike. If you want to quit, your entire life style has to change including your diet, or you will put on weight. Running, hiking, eating healthy, and working out takes care of the weight and adds years to your life and a sparkle to your life. I can't stand to be around cigarette smoke or perfume for that matter.” 7:26:32 AM 10/29/02
