And this will be the first time my wife has ever gone backpacking with me.

We're going with my Recreation class at CSU Fresno.

Almost let the trip pass us by due to the $120.00 cost that my car could use....but screw the car! We're going backpacking!

thinair,
thanks for posting those links!! Did you have any trouble making reservations for camping/lodging? This looks like something I could definitely be interested in.

I didn't have to make the reservations, just had to pay the teacher, he set everything up. I don't think it was too difficult.
We might do some snorkeling or kayaking.

I have camped this island. You should definitely bring snorkeling gear and a wet suit as the water will be chilly. I don;t think is much backpacking to do. Mostly base camping with day hikes.

Hey cool! I just read about the backcountry camp site. The main sites aren't bad, just open. Both are dry camps tho, No biggie. Bring two or three 3-gallon containers (heavy but only 3 1/2 mile hike in). I think I slung a couple if the water containers over a long piece of driftwood in a balanced fashion. Maybe ditch the snorkeling gear somewhere in the woods near the beach? I don't know. Have fun.
