You may be entitled to keep it, but that's doesn't make it right to do so. Look, you are young, so I will cut you a break. Just be careful about being so glib about keeping government handouts that you don't need. There are plenty of people who do need the assistance. last edited: 12/17/07 3:05:59 PM” 3:03:44 PM 12/17/07 “Well that is the excess of my tuition and book expenses but if I wasn't such a cheapskate and had just bought the books on campus about half of that money wouldbe gone and also if I wasn't such a cheapskate the rest would have been spent on other "college needs" so no need to worry whatever I do end up spending it on will be worthwhile. right now I'm thinking about a bike (a.k.a the most energy efficiet form of transportation) and a heck of a lot of fun. oh yeah and I'm a taxpayer too so there.” 3:12:46 PM 12/17/07 “umm why not send me the money and then you can OWN me?” 5:48:49 AM 12/18/07 Rockymountaineer “You have no idea of the #&%!$field you are marching across. There are folks around here who will get upset with you for taking government loans for school. I would not be announcing that you are putting free money in your pocket unless you're ready for what you're gonna get.” 6:08:43 AM 12/18/07 “silly ductape, he already found a good place to put the unused gov money. in my pocket...right rocky!!!” 6:10:15 AM 12/18/07 “Question.. can you apply for more then one Scholarship? or is that a big no no” 8:05:41 AM 12/18/07 “LMAO if i was left handed I could appy for a Scholarship” 8:38:51 AM 12/18/07 “Weird College Scholarships You've researched all the typical scholarships and funding opportunities available to you through federal and state providers, as well as colleges, universities, and private sources. However, you are still looking for additional scholarships for which you may be eligible to further cut the out-of-pocket cost of attending an institute of higher learning. You may qualify for a weird scholarship that most people have never even heard of, depending on your hobbies or field of interest. Do you skateboard? Consider applying for the Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarship, available to high school seniors who are US citizens maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA and planning on enrolling in a two- or four-year degree program at a college or university. Four awards are disbursed yearly one for $5000 and three others to the tune of $1000 each. Perhaps you are interested in psychic phenomena and are studying parapsychology or conducting research in the field. The Parapsychology Foundation offers the Eileen J. Garrett Scholarship for undergrads and graduates to help complete such a degree program. If you can knit, sew, or crochet, you can enter the Make It Yourself With Wool Contest, sponsored by the American Sheep Industry Association. Winners may receive either $1000 or $2000. Believe it or not, the Kor Memorial Scholarship is offered by the Klingon Language Institute for students who are devoted to some sort of language study it does NOT have to be Klingon. A $500 scholarship is awarded annually for a student looking toward a degree program in the study of languages or linguistics. List of Weird Scholarships NCTA Help Santa Find the Perfect Real Christmas Tree — $5000 to $10000 awarded to ages 6-16 for winning essay. Potato Industry Scholarship — Up to $2000 awarded to two senior undergraduate or graduate students in potato-related field of study. The FBI Common Knowledge Challenge — $250 awarded each year to two high school students who can win quiz contest about FBI.” 8:57:19 AM 12/18/07 “Here is a good resource, mapes. fastweb.com There's a fair amount of money to be realized there. I received the University President's merit based at Wayne State when I went there. 3,000 doesn't as far as it once did. Check into the college's you would like to attend and make an appointment with the FA department. I have a little more than half of my student loan subsidized The F.A. departments at both my community college and university's I attended suggested fastweb. Let me know off thread if you need any more help. Good luck!” 9:14:19 AM 12/18/07 “LQ great site. quick question. can you apply for more then one at a time?” 11:25:50 AM 12/18/07 “As many as you want Mapleleaf.” 6:27:06 PM 12/18/07 “You can always go to elf school, maple :) http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071219/lf_nm/christmas_elves_dc” 6:45:04 PM 12/18/07 “OMG I so want to do that.. An elf needs to know how to make a fire in the snow ... also the local nature and animals, because you never know what the clients or kids are going to ask," he said. LOL I can already do most of that. I want to be an Elf” 4:17:11 AM 12/19/07 “You want to be Will Ferrell?” 4:25:20 AM 12/19/07 “She just wants an excuse to wear tights with no skirt over them. ;')” 4:48:37 AM 12/19/07 “oh heck i do that all the time. just ask tree” 5:12:42 AM 12/19/07 “I am fairly capable of answering questions posed to me, Joy. mapes -- Once you sign up for the site, you'll have access to the information about procedures to realize funding. Another thing, I've seen that Lesko fella on the tube pitching his book. I've never checked into it, but it might be something to look into for additional funding sources. Some of the scholarships listed on fastweb take some work -- like writing a paper on a subject matter --, so be sure that you can block out time to fulfill the requirements. As I advised earlier, check with the school F.A. department. They will have additional information on funding resources that you might qualify for needs-based type funding. Good luck.” 6:26:58 AM 12/19/07 “LQ I spent hours on that web site already. great great info and it is just what I am looking for. thank you so much. now I need to start writing essays.. 5 are due by Dec 31. I do plan on appling for many different ones. thanks everyone fingers crossed” 6:30:53 AM 12/19/07 “Not a problem; you're welcome. I have some time off in between semesters. If you would like any help with your papers during that time, please let me know. last edited: 12/19/07 6:37:28 AM” 6:37:13 AM 12/19/07 “then get to it, start writing those essays!!!” 6:43:19 AM 12/19/07 “I HATE TESTS. I THINK MY HEAD IS GOING TO IMPLODED!!!” 12:54:14 PM 12/28/07 “what kind of test are you taking?” 1:52:48 PM 12/28/07 “word, excel, powerpoint” 1:54:37 PM 12/28/07 “GNM youz gots mail” 1:56:58 PM 12/28/07 “did you send it to my "real" address or that new yahoo address in my profile?” 2:00:56 PM 12/28/07 “nm..gotcha. changed my address in my profile .now I've got to train myself to actually check yahoo. thanks for the heads up!” 2:03:36 PM 12/28/07 “you gots more!!!” 2:12:35 PM 12/28/07 “I got more what? email? nope..just looked.” 2:46:39 PM 12/28/07 “again!” 2:49:33 PM 12/28/07 “got it...uggg...it was in the "bulk" box...don't know why. hate yahoo mail!! hate it!!! be sure to save my "real" one.” 3:13:54 PM 12/28/07 “im thinking about going back to school and getting a teaching license. its been 11 years since i graduated college. would my old credits still be good? i really dont want to start over again taking freshman lit 101” 10:06:17 PM 3/22/08 “I had to take a "accuplacer" test to start taking college classes again. It was to prove I could read, write, and do basic math. The amount of credit you get for your past fluctuates wildly from one institution to another, so you'll have to shop around. Lots of government mandated stuff to take for a teaching certificate, or so I've heard. My brother claimed he couldn't get a decent education for all the required classes he had to take. I'm assuming you are talking about doing this in the U.S.A.” 4:58:35 AM 3/23/08 “yea” 4:59:06 AM 3/23/08 “I've decided calculus sucks mostly because of the way it's presented. My stupid $300 textbook is trying to make Isaac Newton out of me by deriving and proving each concept. The beginning of each chapter throws you in over your head and lets you wallow in despair before getting around to explaining the problems at the end of the chapter. What are they thinking? I'm never gonna use this crap - I just need the credits so I can get a pay raise.” 5:05:05 AM 3/23/08 “Hey Crash, you might be able to find a program that has distance learning. You could get started while you are still in Korea and your time in the classroom now might count towards any classroom hour requirement. Just a thought. I don't really know much about this since I am not a teacher.” 6:32:26 AM 3/23/08 “CB, the easiset way to find out if your old credits are good is to start contacting prospective schools and check transferability.” 6:52:51 AM 3/23/08 “already emailed one school. im waiting to hear from them” 6:57:36 AM 3/23/08 “At both of the universities I have attended, 7 years is the rule for UG. Masters you have to complete within 5 years. Teaching cert, depending on where you go, will require Student Teaching time that will probably not be replaced by your time already spent in the classroom. 10 years would be a stretch for a full transfer. I would caution you on any institution that would offer a full transfer; however, you should be able to transfer some credits. You might be able to "test out" in areas of subject matter to quicken the process. There are a lot of diploma mills that specialize in distance learning; be careful about those as well because the diploma will not be worth chit and you'll be out a lot of money. Also, you risk dismissal if the place that hired you finds out after the fact that your diploma comes from a mill.” 7:58:34 AM 3/23/08 “My daughter has been out of college for almost 10 years and was recently certified to teach by NORDA, a non traditional program that is recognized in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. She had a semester of fairly intensive classes and a semester of student teaching. The price was about 5K. In her case the student teaching was waived because of her extensive back ground in substitute teaching and full time in Montessori schools...also because she's worked full time in her field since graduation.” 8:08:49 AM 3/23/08 “Nimble brings up a good point. You should look at the requirements to be certified in the state you would like to work in. Some states will honor a cert. from out of state; which ones I have no idea. I would suggest looking at relative States board of Education to see if there is an honoring system. It would stink to get cert in one state only to have to get re-cert (potentially at your own expense) to work in other.” 8:17:43 AM 3/23/08 “7 years is the rule for UG thats what i was thinking, but like you said, maybe i can test out of some stuff There are a lot of diploma mills that specialize in distance learning; be careful about those im defineitely not going that route, anyway. too risky” 6:15:53 PM 3/23/08 “Crash, I recently went from a manager position with an oil company to a math teacher... You need to check with your state's department of education. Depending on what your original degree is in as well as your work experience, your state may count it. I had an accounting degree and an MBA and all I needed to do was pass a couple tests and take 5 education courses. This is in VA and was for a math position, so your state may be different. Good luck to you!!!!!!!!!! 'fool” 6:24:21 PM 3/23/08 “i have general bachelors in english. i want to be an english and lit teacher. hopefully, theres some crossover” 6:40:04 PM 3/23/08 “One other thing you might want to concider. If you go back and get your Masters, you could teach at a junior college; at least that is the way it works here in Michigan. The pay is quite nice and might be less hassle for you than trying to get into a K-12 context.” 7:28:59 AM 3/24/08 “I took my calc 1 final last night. It sucked so bad I don't even feel glad it's over. I got a 90 cause it was multiple choice on the internet, but I don't know anything about it. I need a shower.” 3:25:37 AM 4/30/08 “Calculus II is great for insomnia. Or maybe I couldn't sleep because I just wanted to get the first chapter done. Aced the test at 2:00 a.m. and off to dreamland. 5 more tests and I'll be done!” 5:48:30 AM 6/11/08 “Woo-Hoooo! Just took my Calculus II final. Got a B but have an A overall in the class. I might actually get that degree now.” 10:40:25 PM 7/29/08 “Taking a class today on Excel....UGH....” 6:19:11 AM 10/07/08 “a class on Excel? ohhh-kay Gunna be spreadsheeting, huh? Whatcha gunna spread?” 6:22:38 AM 10/07/08 “wow THAT WAS COOL :) excel is fun once you understand it...” 11:59:59 AM 10/07/08 Jump to Page << prev
