Look, you are young, so I will cut you a break. Just be careful about being so glib about keeping government handouts that you don't need. There are plenty of people who do need the assistance.

“Well that is the excess of my tuition and book expenses but if I wasn't such a cheapskate and had just bought the books on campus about half of that money wouldbe gone and also if I wasn't such a cheapskate the rest would have been spent on other "college needs" so no need to worry whatever I do end up spending it on will be worthwhile. right now I'm thinking about a bike (a.k.a the most energy efficiet form of transportation) and a heck of a lot of fun. oh yeah and I'm a taxpayer too so there.”

I received the University President's merit based at Wayne State when I went there. 3,000 doesn't as far as it once did. Check into the college's you would like to attend and make an appointment with the FA department. I have a little more than half of my student loan subsidized

mapes -- Once you sign up for the site, you'll have access to the information about procedures to realize funding.

Another thing, I've seen that Lesko fella on the tube pitching his book. I've never checked into it, but it might be something to look into for additional funding sources.

Some of the scholarships listed on fastweb take some work -- like writing a paper on a subject matter --, so be sure that you can block out time to fulfill the requirements. As I advised earlier, check with the school F.A. department. They will have additional information on funding resources that you might qualify for needs-based type funding.

“I had to take a "accuplacer" test to start taking college classes again. It was to prove I could read, write, and do basic math.

The amount of credit you get for your past fluctuates wildly from one institution to another, so you'll have to shop around. Lots of government mandated stuff to take for a teaching certificate, or so I've heard. My brother claimed he couldn't get a decent education for all the required classes he had to take.

I'm assuming you are talking about doing this in the U.S.A.”

“I've decided calculus sucks mostly because of the way it's presented. My stupid $300 textbook is trying to make Isaac Newton out of me by deriving and proving each concept. The beginning of each chapter throws you in over your head and lets you wallow in despair before getting around to explaining the problems at the end of the chapter.

“Hey Crash, you might be able to find a program that has distance learning. You could get started while you are still in Korea and your time in the classroom now might count towards any classroom hour requirement. Just a thought. I don't really know much about this since I am not a teacher.”

“At both of the universities I have attended, 7 years is the rule for UG. Masters you have to complete within 5 years. Teaching cert, depending on where you go, will require Student Teaching time that will probably not be replaced by your time already spent in the classroom.

10 years would be a stretch for a full transfer. I would caution you on any institution that would offer a full transfer; however, you should be able to transfer some credits. You might be able to "test out" in areas of subject matter to quicken the process.

There are a lot of diploma mills that specialize in distance learning; be careful about those as well because the diploma will not be worth chit and you'll be out a lot of money. Also, you risk dismissal if the place that hired you finds out after the fact that your diploma comes from a mill.”

“My daughter has been out of college for almost 10 years and was recently certified to teach by NORDA, a non traditional program that is recognized in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. She had a semester of fairly intensive classes and a semester of student teaching. The price was about 5K. In her case the student teaching was waived because of her extensive back ground in substitute teaching and full time in Montessori schools...also because she's worked full time in her field since graduation.”

“Nimble brings up a good point. You should look at the requirements to be certified in the state you would like to work in. Some states will honor a cert. from out of state; which ones I have no idea. I would suggest looking at relative States board of Education to see if there is an honoring system. It would stink to get cert in one state only to have to get re-cert (potentially at your own expense) to work in other.”

“Crash, I recently went from a manager position with an oil company to a math teacher... You need to check with your state's department of education.

Depending on what your original degree is in as well as your work experience, your state may count it. I had an accounting degree and an MBA and all I needed to do was pass a couple tests and take 5 education courses.

“One other thing you might want to concider. If you go back and get your Masters, you could teach at a junior college; at least that is the way it works here in Michigan. The pay is quite nice and might be less hassle for you than trying to get into a K-12 context.”
