How far will you drive to hike?

“How far will you drive to go on a weekend TT hike?
I'm considering driving 650 miles one way to do a TT hike.
The more I think about it, the crazyier it sounds.
Am I nuts?

“Dude, not that far. I'f make sure it was at least a week long trip is I'm driving 1300 miles. I usually drive about 150-200 miles RT, usually about 2-2.5 hours each way.”

“How long is the hike for?
If it is for only an overnighter, then it might not be worth it. But if its for a good couple of days then I'd go for it.
I think the longest for me was 3 1/2hrs.”

“Wolfman's Brother and I did the 9 hour drive to Baxter State Park in Maine.. Pennsy Hiker, LyndyS, and Fritz drove even farther... and Gforce and Cow Pattie drove even farther still, all the way from Michigan and Indiana!”

“The last two Eastern Sierra hikes I went on were 5.5 hour drives to reach the trail head. The last trip was just an overnighter...so I guess I'm willing to drive quite a ways for a trip!”

“650 is near what I drove to go to roaring plains for a 20 mile weekend hike. It was worth it. Like bbinkley said, it depends on the company.”

“6 hours drive one way is my limit and it better be for more than an overnighter. Anything more tahn 6 hours means that I'm flying. If any hike I'm doing is more than 2 hours drive away, I'm staying overnight as well and most are.”

if my family is gone to grandmas for a couple days I am willing to travel more :)”

“SnowDude and I drove 2200+ mi r/t for Montanapalooza. 1000 mi r/t for the the Frozen Fanny BP near Lake Tahoe. 1000 mi r/t mtnsteve's New Years Tipi BP at Lassen NP.

And my weekend trips are 440-650 mi r/t.”

“This last Eastern Sierra TT trip was about a 500 mile round trip for me. Of course my mode of transpartation I chose got me about 13 MPG, but it was fun.

Generally my round trip mileage is around 250 for a weekend or day a hike.”

“8 miles across a dry riverbed...4.5 hours for a weekend gig...unless its a the bufalo river...thats a min of 5 hours, but worth it.”

“I drove 1000 miles for the ALDHA Gathering/AT trip a couple of weeks ago. If we hadn't gone to the Gathering, it would have only been about 400-500 miles. For a weeklong trip, it was well worth it.”

I get a call at 4:00 pm on Friday. It's Crazy Mike. "hey, guess who this is! We're just now heading through Chicago. Man, this traffic sucks! Hey how fast can you drive through the Dakotas and Montana?"

“Over 700 miles to CMB's house and then another from there another 5 1/2 hour drive to somwhere in Iowa..was just about a too long of a drive and not hardly worth it..”

“I would consider driving all the way back East if it was a wk. long trip. I really want to hike back there. I would have to a partner from the West heading in the same direction though, I would be too freaked out about driving through major cities. I couldn't handle the LA freeway in a cab and I can barely drive through Denver.”

It really depends on how bad I want to hike. If the urge is strong enough I go. Treebait and I once did about 600 miles to the smokies and only dayhiked and then came home. It seemed very silly to do so but we had fun doing it. Good company (and cinnamon rolls) make it worthwhile.”

“newgirl, my sister has a very big problem driving in big areas. i remeber her driving once and closeing her eyes because a big rig was driving on the other side toward her. I made her pull over and I drove home. She is very scared of driving and I feel very bad for her cause she lives in the middle of nowhere and her girls are off to collage and her husband works all the time. She drive to Ny once. ONCE”

“I've done 1000+ miles RT (plus a boat ride) to go to Isle Royale. Definitly worth it.”
