How far will you drive to hike?View Messages“How far will you drive to go on a weekend TT hike? I'm considering driving 650 miles one way to do a TT hike. The more I think about it, the crazyier it sounds. Am I nuts? Crazy I'm crazy for feelin' so lonely I'm crazy Crazy for feelin' so blue I knew you'd love me as long as you wanted And then someday You'd leave me for somebody new Worry, why do I let myself worry? Wonderin' what in the world did I do? I'm crazy For thinkin' that my love could hold you I'm crazy for cryin' And crazy for tryin' And I'm crazy for lovin' you Crazy For thinkin' that my love could hold you I'm crazy for cryin' And crazy for tryin' And I'm crazy for lovin' you” 1:20:19 PM 11/07/02 “Dude, not that far. I'f make sure it was at least a week long trip is I'm driving 1300 miles. I usually drive about 150-200 miles RT, usually about 2-2.5 hours each way.” 1:24:57 PM 11/07/02 “How long is the hike for? If it is for only an overnighter, then it might not be worth it. But if its for a good couple of days then I'd go for it. I think the longest for me was 3 1/2hrs.” 1:34:30 PM 11/07/02 “Wolfman's Brother and I did the 9 hour drive to Baxter State Park in Maine.. Pennsy Hiker, LyndyS, and Fritz drove even farther... and Gforce and Cow Pattie drove even farther still, all the way from Michigan and Indiana!” 1:36:57 PM 11/07/02 “Crazy Mike and G-force drove about 1,500 miles to Montanapalooza. It only took them 6 hours!” 1:40:00 PM 11/07/02 “It all depends who's going on the hike.” 1:42:23 PM 11/07/02 “The last two Eastern Sierra hikes I went on were 5.5 hour drives to reach the trail head. The last trip was just an overnighter...so I guess I'm willing to drive quite a ways for a trip!” 1:50:35 PM 11/07/02 “650 is near what I drove to go to roaring plains for a 20 mile weekend hike. It was worth it. Like bbinkley said, it depends on the company.” 1:51:18 PM 11/07/02 “6 hours drive one way is my limit and it better be for more than an overnighter. Anything more tahn 6 hours means that I'm flying. If any hike I'm doing is more than 2 hours drive away, I'm staying overnight as well and most are.” 1:51:49 PM 11/07/02 “i think I'll drive around 150 miles one way for a dayhike. Overnighters: hmm, I think I would drive around 250 or 300 miles. if my family is gone to grandmas for a couple days I am willing to travel more :)” 1:54:58 PM 11/07/02 “SnowDude and I drove 2200+ mi r/t for Montanapalooza. 1000 mi r/t for the the Frozen Fanny BP near Lake Tahoe. 1000 mi r/t mtnsteve's New Years Tipi BP at Lassen NP. And my weekend trips are 440-650 mi r/t.” 1:59:06 PM 11/07/02 “I have to give myself at least an extra hour becasue i have never fund the trailHead on the first try. lol” 1:59:45 PM 11/07/02 “Crazy Mike is going on this trip and I figure the entertainment value from him must be worth at least 450 miles based upon what I read here, LOL. (No offense CMB)” 2:02:37 PM 11/07/02 “This last Eastern Sierra TT trip was about a 500 mile round trip for me. Of course my mode of transpartation I chose got me about 13 MPG, but it was fun. Generally my round trip mileage is around 250 for a weekend or day a hike.” 2:06:07 PM 11/07/02 “Stovestomper, r u going on the Mt Rogers trip?” 2:13:21 PM 11/07/02 “I'm going 500+ miles next week to Mt Rogers which is a 3 day hike. I've also driven 180-200 miles into the Catskills for day hikes.” 2:15:31 PM 11/07/02 “See pennsy, that would be worth it. travling that far just for a day hike is a bit much thou...” 2:18:27 PM 11/07/02 “Right now the farthest I've driven is around 600 miles r/t for 3 days.” 2:18:41 PM 11/07/02 “Mt Roger's is the trip I'm thinking about.” 2:20:57 PM 11/07/02 “Cool, I will see you there. I just checked mapquest and it is only 350 miles for me, plus I have to go pickup walkindude which will add on another 30-40 miles.” 2:24:11 PM 11/07/02 Driving “I've driven 325 miles for a weekend trip. It's always worth the effort. We seem to always have some kind of adventure along the way too. Drive safely and have fun!” 2:27:33 PM 11/07/02 6.5 hours so that I could drag my canoe “8 miles across a dry riverbed...4.5 hours for a weekend gig...unless its a the bufalo river...thats a min of 5 hours, but worth it.” 3:24:37 PM 11/07/02 “I drove 1000 miles for the ALDHA Gathering/AT trip a couple of weeks ago. If we hadn't gone to the Gathering, it would have only been about 400-500 miles. For a weeklong trip, it was well worth it.” 3:28:26 PM 11/07/02 “Montanapalooza: I get a call at 4:00 pm on Friday. It's Crazy Mike. "hey, guess who this is! We're just now heading through Chicago. Man, this traffic sucks! Hey how fast can you drive through the Dakotas and Montana?" "Oh, 110, 120, whatever," I tell him. "Cool! Pimp! We'll see ya later!!" he says. The next thing I know they're pulling into my driveway in Montana!” 3:30:59 PM 11/07/02 “Over 700 miles to CMB's house and then another from there another 5 1/2 hour drive to somwhere in Iowa..was just about a too long of a drive and not hardly worth it..” 3:37:40 PM 11/07/02 “I would consider driving all the way back East if it was a wk. long trip. I really want to hike back there. I would have to a partner from the West heading in the same direction though, I would be too freaked out about driving through major cities. I couldn't handle the LA freeway in a cab and I can barely drive through Denver.” 3:57:22 PM 11/07/02 “Drove from Bham,Al.to Valley,Wy.2000+ one way for a two week adventure.More than worth it ,have plans to go to the Winds this summer.” 4:00:43 PM 11/07/02 “newy, you better avoid Knoxville, Chattanooga, or Atlanta then.” 4:01:17 PM 11/07/02 “Avoid Nashvegas for sure.” 4:06:00 PM 11/07/02 “The longest was about 600 miles for three mights. It really depends on how bad I want to hike. If the urge is strong enough I go. Treebait and I once did about 600 miles to the smokies and only dayhiked and then came home. It seemed very silly to do so but we had fun doing it. Good company (and cinnamon rolls) make it worthwhile.” 4:11:59 PM 11/07/02 “newgirl, my sister has a very big problem driving in big areas. i remeber her driving once and closeing her eyes because a big rig was driving on the other side toward her. I made her pull over and I drove home. She is very scared of driving and I feel very bad for her cause she lives in the middle of nowhere and her girls are off to collage and her husband works all the time. She drive to Ny once. ONCE” 4:12:20 PM 11/07/02 “I've done 1000+ miles RT (plus a boat ride) to go to Isle Royale. Definitly worth it.” 4:12:58 PM 11/07/02 “That's why I would need a driving partner. Someone calm, who can handle it.” 4:13:33 PM 11/07/02 “I'm not afraid of driving in general. Christ, I drive 100 miles RT every night for school on a lonely highway. I gone to WA by myself, etc. I just hate going into huge metro areas in a car.” 4:17:40 PM 11/07/02 “If you come out east ng, the only major metro area from montana to here is chicago, and even that isn't as bad as LA or Denver.” 4:33:53 PM 11/07/02 “2,000 miles is my cut off limit! 8)” 4:34:54 PM 11/07/02 “You think Denver is worse then Chicago?” 4:38:46 PM 11/07/02 “yes, because if you take 80, you miss most of chicago, ya get nailed in east chicago/gary though.” 4:48:23 PM 11/07/02 “My real issues for making a hike are money and time away from Newergirl? How much money (I'm mainly talking travel expenses, not gear) and time (away from job, kids, etc.) are you willing or able to spend? (Hmmmm. Maybe this is too personal?)” 4:49:00 PM 11/07/02 “Gary sucks!!!!! 8|” 4:51:36 PM 11/07/02 “Way off subject here but Crazy Mike how far are you from Ft Wayne?” 5:01:59 PM 11/07/02 “Okay, I guess that was too personal. Sorry!” 5:02:05 PM 11/07/02 “2 hours from Ft Wayne! 8)” 5:03:01 PM 11/07/02 “newgirl, I may be hiking in MT either this winter (holidays) or next spring (memorial day). I'll let ya know how brutal the drive is.” 5:04:35 PM 11/07/02 “Cool! Got some realitives in Ft Wayne and would like to do some backpacking in that area. It seems like in that area of the country you can make it anywhere quickly.” 5:06:48 PM 11/07/02 “Seriously Buddha!? You have to let Aero, Geezr, and I know if and when you're coming. I won't be doing any "freeze the tits" hikes, but I'd love to meet another TTer.” 5:09:25 PM 11/07/02 “I'll let you guys know for sure, plans are not set yet.” 5:10:48 PM 11/07/02 Hmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!! “You might get a lot of takers for that freeze the tits thing.” 5:15:29 PM 11/07/02 “No, Chief, I WON'T be doing that. I'm not down w/ winter hiking. I was trying to sound like a guy saying "freeze 'yer balls off."” 5:19:14 PM 11/07/02 newgirl “My real issues for making a hike are money and time away from Newergirl? How much money (I'm mainly talking travel expenses, not gear) and time (away from job, kids, etc.) are you willing or able to spend? (Hmmmm. Maybe this is too personal?)" newgirl 04:49:00 PM 11/07/02 Who are you asking the question to?” 5:26:27 PM 11/07/02
