“Well are two days were a adventure in a lesson we have learned before DO NOT listen to weathermen... We left on Wednesday morning at 5:30 to hit the Smoky's. Weather when we went to bed was clearing in the morning partly cloudy etc etc. We drove in some rain to Gatlinburg to get our premit and in runs a ranger "Just got a call from the top extreme winds and sleet, ice on roads by tonight" Well we didn't want to hear that. But being the nuts we are drove on up to the top. When we got to Newfound Gap my gosh what wind...blowing the car around sleet hitting everything. I got out and walked down to the bathrooms came back up and had to fight to move each leg forward! Wind felt like pins hitting your face. Well I am thinking no way I don't like this much cold. And my gear is not for that kind of COLD. We sit there awhile hoping things will blow on out but didn't. We drove back to Cosby and thought well we could start the other way and tomorrow will be better. But was no better there. We drove back home and went to the park here. Cumberland Gap National Historical Park. Had to get some where before dark. Rented the cabin at Martin's Fork and hiked up the road to Hensley Settlement. We started a little after 2pm. After 8 miles in the fog got there around 5:30. Ate dinner in the bag by 7. It was cold but great to be out. We hiked out the next morning by White Rocks. Around 10 the sun won out over fog and was a lovely hiking day. I guess we will finish those 30 miles in the Smokey's another time. It will be there..... We just couldn't waste the two days we had not hiking. Barbara” 8:08:51 AM 11/08/02 “Glad everything turned out OK. Sure feels good when the tent is all setup.” 8:28:46 AM 11/08/02 “Serendipity in disguise? Maybe next time will work out better for those wanting to hike with you? Keep us posted, please.” 4:16:44 PM 11/08/02 “Fog? At Hensley? You're kiddin'! <G> Well, it's just after breakfast I'm in the road And the weatherman lied... Paul Simon "Papa Hobo"” 12:31:14 PM 11/09/02 “Will keep everyone posted. Gee Mark I just can't think of there ever being fog at Hensley! You do need to come back when there is no fog....... Barbara” 5:06:01 PM 11/09/02 “I need to get this scanner working that I inherited. I got some Great foggy photos at Hensley that time. If it had been any foggier we would've needed a GPS to walk 20 feet, <G>.” 7:55:07 PM 11/09/02 “It is so cool sitting here in Arizona having some idea of where you were and what you were doin. Cindylu and I bailed because of high winds and rain. We spent the weekend at my house working over a bottle of cheap merlot and solving the world's problems.” 2:06:35 AM 11/10/02 “So, how far did y'all get? <G>” 6:21:32 AM 11/10/02 “Ummm as far as my living room?” 6:32:45 AM 11/10/02 “I was thinkin' y'all might've made more progress with the merlot than with the Problems of the World, <GRIN>” 6:45:01 AM 11/10/02 “Chuckles--well we polished off a pretty big bottle. Problems of the world included discussions of gear and wayward children.” 6:59:40 AM 11/10/02 “Gee Mary to bad I would have just come on out there and help you finish the bottle and solve the worlds problems.....:) But hey I am planning on being there in April if nothing happens. Barbara” 10:47:23 AM 11/10/02 “I'm going up to get a permit on the first. Robert says he will come and Janet says OK to Katie coming so we will have lots of little girls. We could have used your help with that bottle--would have felt better yesterday morning ;)” 11:03:53 AM 11/10/02 “I forgot to tell you--last week we ate that enertia cheesecake you left here last summer--bring some more!!” 11:05:42 AM 11/10/02 “Ok Mary that stuff is good:)” 9:56:15 PM 11/11/02 “Hike on!” 5:00:49 AM 11/12/02
