in mountain bridge wilderness sc... “anyone hiked this one before? I saw the trail on sctrails.net and I kind a got curious. Seams like fun, but of course I would like to hear from someone experienced...” 2:42:02 PM 11/08/02 “gee, I thought this was going to be music for healthcare workers.” 3:03:57 PM 11/08/02 “I thought it would be something I could trip over at a convenient location for treatment, sort of like one-stop shopping.” 3:14:46 PM 11/08/02 “geo, I thought you already hiked it! yuk yuk I would love to hear the history of the rock.” 3:56:06 PM 11/08/02 “so no one knows a thing....all too chicken or to easy for ya?” 4:05:36 PM 11/08/02 The history “The rock I slipped on? It was laid down on the floor of a shallow sea roughly 290 million years ago as sand and gravel were deposited in an estuarine environment, uplifted about 50 million years later, and only relatively recently exposed to air. Freezing and thawing during the ice ages shattered the bed of rock that it was in, and slowly into smaller fragments over time. In the past 25 or 30 years, somebody picked it up and placed it on top of a rock dam they built to dam a small stream. Water eroded around the dam and left the rocks lying where they had been placed. People cut a path through the campground and used the old dam as a bridge over the small stream, which trickles under and around the rocks. Meanwhile, lichens and fungus had grown on the rock, making it slippery when wet. On Aug. 25, 2002, dew was still coating the rocks just after 8 a.m. when I tried to cross them on the way to the outhouse. Left leg slipped and right got caught between two rocks. That's as much of their history as I can recount just now.” 4:06:24 PM 11/08/02 “link for it is here: http://www.sctrails.net/Trails/ALLTRAILS/Hiking/Upcountry/HospitalRock.html sorry, am too lazy to type the html. (i do that all day long at work)” 4:06:42 PM 11/08/02 “oh yeah blame it on something that is 290 million years old....” 4:09:43 PM 11/08/02 “so this is the trail you got your booboo from?” 4:09:57 PM 11/08/02 “what I want to ask is, do you recommend it? nice trail? (but slippery?) nice view?? Come on now!!!” 5:03:44 PM 11/08/02
