“That NPR piece was nice. The flight attendant in that story was an angel.

I've been to several funerals at Arlington.
Those guys really know how to do a funeral.

We had a two man Army team do the flag and all that at my dad's funeral last November(not Arlington).
At the end of it all a friend dressed in kilt played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes.
There was not a dry eye.

“I took over membership at my Legion branch from a WW II vet. I decided that I would get the remaining (3) WW II vets Life Membership Awards that did not have them (2 have).

The paperwork was a bytch and the bureacrats were their usual pig selves.

Well, we got the e-mail Friday that they would have their Life Memberships and we were able to announce it in their presence at the Remembrance Day dinner Saturday evening. I'll do the official presentations when we get the certificates.

Our ceremony was Sunday at the village cenotaph and, as usual, was quite moving.

I watched the Canadian ceremony to-day on CBC TV at the Ottawa monument. It was a shock to see that the honourary mother of fallen soldiers was Mrs. Stachnik. Cpl Stachnick was one of the first caualties in the war in Afghanistan and the buddy of a young friend - a son of a rugby buddy of mine. My young friend is a Mcpl in the 3rd Bn Combat Engineers and has served in two tours in Afghanistan and is scheduled to reurn soon.

It sort of brought it close to home.

They shall not grow old as we who are left grow old,

“I think there would be a lot more than that. There were dozens in Ottawa thus morning and the US population is ten fold ours.

Our branch has five out of 200 members.

There is only one WW I veteran still alive in Canada and you might have heard 11 WW I vets.”

“No, there are loads of WW2 vets still; although they are disappearing quickly. It's the WW1 vets who are so limited now. Most of them were sneaky and joined up at a younger age than allowed.”

“so I am sitting here in my CHU (containerized housing unit).Chillin with some of the best men I have met, jeff, travis, nate and steve. Remembering what we can and trying to forget what we cant. The list of names that we wear on our wrists, johnson, casiewicz,hilton and volmer. Our Brothers we have known and loved liked they were kin. Trying to come to terms with what we have given and what our families must cope with. Steves boy lives in a hotel with his mom, a broken home. Trav, a stunted man-boy 100yrs old and 19 all at once. Nate and jeff old warhorses trying to come to grips with what they know. Everyday that I get up I after a fitful sleep (the sleep meds the doc give me are marginal at best)I think about, nates folks and kailey, and jeremiah, aisan, gabriel, jeannie, abby and liberty. I think about my brothers and their families. I think about what each of them has given (most on their second + deployment one on number 7) and am humbled by standing in their shadows. I am greatful for who they are and what they represent. I am privileged to call these men my brothers. May God bless their families”

Veterans day seems bigger than ever this year. Inexplicable wars I guess. Im a bit ashamed to be named among veterans. I really dont measure up. I joined the military after failing at my first shot at the American dream. I wasnt one bit proud of it. I went with my tail between my legs - a loser who blew his chance at college.

So when people say we owe veterans a debt of gratitude, Im thinking I owe the military. I got out of the Navy a hot commodity on the job market and have lived a cushy life ever since. I joined a peace-time force for my own gain and complained about it the whole time. But I did work really hard to keep a ship running and I learned that I was capable of a lot more than Id previously given myself credit for.

Its nice to be lumped into the same group as those who actually fought for our freedom, but I really dont compare. Aint America great?
