What did you do, catch Herpes off'n them rocks?" Tom Terrific 11:59:24 AM 11/13/02 That's the coumadin (warfarin) to thin the blood to prevent clots. Gotta take it until mid-March. The Cats have some big bumps and rocks, not quite as bad as the Daks, but apparently enough to put a hurting on people who take them lightly. Both the Daks and the Cats are results of glacial geology, which the southern Appalachians are not. Glacial geology scours out some steep grades, particularly in cirques, the hollow bowls near the peaks. I have not been to the Cats, but from what I have seen in photos they look like mini-versions of the Daks. Artex might be able to shed some light on the issue. Maple, did see the Tom Jones thread. I will have to see what the weather looks like closer to the event. I am not going to camp out in sub-freezing weather this winter, if ever again. I expect my first overnighter will be in April, hopefully fully recovered and rehabbed. I seem to be walking normally after this morning's PT session. Must be magic or something.” 3:50:55 PM 11/13/02 “then meet us and hike for a little while. you can still do day hikes..” 3:56:01 PM 11/13/02 The Thirteenth warrior can be no northman... “That's why we got chelle, I guess. This one's gonna be nuts.” 4:42:28 PM 11/13/02 “LMAO @ Corporal Nasty!” 4:43:25 PM 11/13/02 “Hmmmmm..... Uncle Pennsy? Old Coot? a real life Pennsy troll (Pansy Hiker)???...... It's a darn good thing I am getting ready to leave for the Virginia Mt Rogers trip tonight, or the Catskills wouldn't be the only things getting kicked.” 4:59:29 PM 11/13/02 “fight fight fight im selling popcorn @ $2.00 a bag” 5:00:37 PM 11/13/02 “The Thirteenth warrior can be no northman... guess you're outta luck then - 'cause this morning I was informed that this trip is only supposed to be for you guys...so I guess I've been booted off..... :( :( :( :( :(” 5:13:53 PM 11/13/02 “:( Chelle, I seem to have lost your number, would you mind sending it? sling120@hotmail.com Thanks!” 5:20:07 PM 11/13/02 “Don't take that! Go anyway. Tell Goretex that if ya don't go his st*sh is getting sold to the highest bidder!” 5:21:58 PM 11/13/02 legal footwear “Can we fight 'em with forks duct- taped to our boots? or is this not legal gear cleared by the International Federation of Mountain @ss Whipin' (IFMAW)? If not, I need some snowshoe/crampon advice!” 5:31:48 PM 11/13/02 “Same here, any advice on those things would be really cool. I'm thinking about renting some since they're so damn expensive, but which ones do I try to rent?” 5:43:50 PM 11/13/02 Snowshoes for Rent “I just called EMS here in the city - they will be renting out snowshoes starting next Monday - as far as crampons are concerned....they don't rent 'em - but I will call Tent & Trails to see what their story is...” 5:51:36 PM 11/13/02 “I wish I could offer more advice on crampons and snowshoes, but I'm learning myself. I already have a pair of crampons, and depending on the weather they could pretty much be a necessity. BUT, like I said, I'm pretty inexperienced at winter hiking, so don't take my word for it. Chelle - trip only for us guys?!?! Bullmalarkey! It's open to any TT'er who wants to come! We'd love to have you along.” 6:16:06 PM 11/13/02 “Cpl Nasty, you have mail!” 7:18:23 PM 11/13/02 “I'll have to plant the seed here at home, maybe since I'm not going to Mt. Rogers this weekend she'll feel bad for me and say ok..... Hummmm, I am dumping her for a trip right after Thanksgiving dinner. This might be tough but I'll give it a try anyway.” 7:31:51 PM 11/13/02 “Cool, it'd be awesome if you could make it SirPete.” 7:40:23 PM 11/13/02 “Thanks Geo! back at ya-” 7:43:39 PM 11/13/02 “What's the itinerary for this quest?20 years ago a porcupine got my boots on Slide. VENGENCE IS MINE.” 8:01:05 PM 11/13/02 “chelle, please tell me this is not true? If they wont let you play then they will have to deal with me!!! So then if you cant go then you can hang with the girls at the Aquarium.... mapleleaf” 8:02:04 PM 11/13/02 “Maple...can you believe it? Girl, we need to talk 'cause I'm running low on patience...but thats okay - 'cause I made a vow today to learn how to kick some serious mountain ass and one day make it up Everest!!! (i've lost me mind) Anyway, I'm still planning on going - and if the boys don't like it - its only because they fear having their butts kicked BY A GRRRLLL!!! nah...they are actually afraid of not being able to do all the disgusting men things they do when us ladies aren't lookin! ;) its all goooooooooooddddddd” 8:12:57 PM 11/13/02 “but they do that stuff here!!! I cant bring myself to crap in the woods..thread started by a guy so you go with them and do your GIRL stuff...that will teach em... GORETEX. have I taught you nothing! we need to talk mister!!!” 7:49:43 AM 11/14/02 “Now 'e's bloody gone and done it up right. 'E's about to find out that the bloody snakes and crocs are nothing compared to th' likes uv Maple Lyfe gone bloody mad. Run fer yer life Myte! Goretex, Australian for road kill!” 7:56:44 AM 11/14/02 “How did this turn out to be that none of us allegedly want Chelle to come along because she's a girl? Not true at all! There have been nothing but welcomes on this thread.” 7:59:05 AM 11/14/02 im on to you!! “good way to cover that butt of yours Artex” 8:03:15 AM 11/14/02 “you guys aren't going to tc2?” 8:04:54 AM 11/14/02 “Buddha Bear, too far of a drive, it'd be a 12-13 hour trip for me, one way. Mapleleaf, covering my butt? I have no idea what you're talking about. :-(” 8:06:27 AM 11/14/02 “Shucks Geoboot, alcohol is a great blood-thinner. What you need is some Trail Talk Physical Therapy. Covering one's butt? Yes please, keep your mudflap on!” 8:29:49 AM 11/14/02 “Well guys, sorry this chick has to bug out way to far; 17 hour or more drive for me. Have a good time! Chelle show 'em how it's done girl!!!” 3:13:15 PM 11/14/02 “Chelle will be the least of their worries if Maple gets ahold of them. Somebody's ears are gonna look puffy after she's done!” 3:19:54 PM 11/14/02 “so is there anyone else that dosent think chell should go???” 3:20:40 PM 11/14/02 “This has been buggin' me ever since chelle posted asking if anyone minded if a girl came along. Sounds like issues on the home front to me. I doubt that Artex & co. would even think once about it.” 3:52:05 PM 11/14/02 “Twigeater, I'm a bit bugged by it myself. It'd be great if Chelle could make it. Tango, that is quite a haul!” 3:59:08 PM 11/14/02 “all right all ready - yes, if i can get my hands on the cold weather gear - then yes, i'm coming... besides - after i vowed to do Everest in the next 5 years - I have alot of experience to gain... i'm doing it for all the TT ladies!!” 4:55:22 PM 11/14/02 “cool! chic's in snow bunny suites” 7:39:35 PM 11/14/02 “Hey, I really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really want to come on this trip... But I don't think my schedule is going to allow it. :( If things open up, I am THERE!” 7:48:32 PM 11/14/02 “That'd be great, Fritz- clear that damn schedule out.” 7:58:09 PM 11/14/02 route “Can someone post the itinerary so I can start to plan my 'illness" for work. I have about a 3 1/2 hour drive....but I am already there.” 7:40:35 PM 11/15/02 Hello folks “I was invited to check out this trip... I'm interested but I'm unclear as to the whens and what's: My details: based in NYC, I can get to anywhere in the Sugarloaf to Indian Head- Devils Path area by public transit, arriving Friday night 12/6- likely arrival time 9-11ish. I'll need to be back in NYC by Sunday night, I can manage that myself, but rides accepted. I've been to this area several times, I've got some "group" gear if there's need- I can share a stove, tent or more likely, a tarp.” 7:59:27 PM 11/15/02 “As far as the whens and whats go, I think that's a little up in the air at the moment- I'm going to look at my maps and see if I can figure something out. I had also been thinking about possibly heading up there that Friday night and camping out near the bottom of Indian head- My email's in my profile if anyone wants to get ahold of my number or anything.” 8:18:32 PM 11/15/02 “I think for the trail we have been planning on doing - Indian Head to Hunter (correct me guys if I'm making stuff up) will take at least two full days of some serious trail bustin'! I still think three would be best for that particular hike - with snow and ice - I suspect the going might be a bit slower than normal. Corp' - I think its a great idea to have a camp set up Friday evening - then if we get up early and hit the trail - I think we'd be in good stead. Anyone know what the notches between Twin and Sugarloaf and Sugarloaf and Plataeu are like?” 10:12:34 AM 11/16/02 “THe notch between sugaroaf and Plataeu is flatish andnot so rocky compared to the rest of the area. The Lean to area has some cleared areas for camping and there is a "spring" that is likely active this time of year, though by going north down the old trail, or heading up Plateau there are better and more reliable sources. The Twin and Sugarloaf notch is rougher, rockier. I've not camped there, though my impression when going through was a small tent was needed, preferably one that could be set up on a large rock. I may be confusing the Twin-Sugarloaf notch with the Twin-Indian head notch, so I limiting my comment to shared qualities. Indian Head-Twin-Sugarloaf was one of my earlier hikes. We managed the traverse in a day, in snow on the trail conditions, with full packs. Elevation gain and loss will be the biggest pain of the walk.” 8:03:19 AM 11/17/02 “chelle2- What kind of cold weather gear is needed?” 11:51:06 AM 11/17/02 “i'm just a beginner - I recommend asking Goretex but goretex and down have proved to keep me nice and toasty - a 0 degree mummy bag from Mapleleaf also kept me warm at night (i tend to be a cold sleeper), I recently picked up a pair of gloves from EMS - they're great - but stay away from their jackets that claim to be windproof - 'cause they suck there has been some discussion about needing snowshoes and possibly crampons - EMS rents snowshoes - and I done some research on EBay - and there are a ton of crampons available for very little cash other than that - the usual waterproof/windproof layers - and I have a down vest/jacket that recently proved to incredibly toasty - a fleece hat, good gloves, and warm socks! My appendages always feel the cold - even in summer - so I am looking into getting down booties for around camp - heard they are great for us ladies best of luck - are you coming on the trip?” 12:55:04 PM 11/17/02 “Goretex and down have proved to keep me nice and toasty- I bet he has Chelle, but I don't think boyfriends are considered to be cold weather gear.” 12:58:04 PM 11/17/02 By the way... “What's the deal with the stove you want? Are you baking the cookies, or did you want the pocket rocket?” 1:06:40 PM 11/17/02 “I want the stove that Goretex has. Should be great for cooking, and it doubles for interplanetary travel.” 1:10:05 PM 11/17/02 “cheeky bloody bugga'! actually, I heard about the pocket rocket offer - was so excited by it! - but....I have a whisperlite internationale 600 coming in the mail from Oregon - as a xmas present from a fellow BP'er!! - I can't wait until it arrives this week - so I guess the much cherished pocket rocket will need to find a different home :( and by the way - was that a hint to bake some cookies for the next trip??? you better watch out with your request - or we might all end up with food poisoning from my cooking! hahahaha” 1:12:11 PM 11/17/02 “Those brownies you made the first trip I met you on were pretty damn good- I'd take a chance with the cookies. Congrats on the Xmas stove!” 1:19:56 PM 11/17/02 Jump to Page << prev
