Thanks for thinking of me, everyone! I had a pretty good trip in the Smokies, though not as much hiking or painting as I'd like. I did get a free dessert from one of my favorite little restaurants, too. A belgian chocolate truffle torte. It's like the filling and just the filling from an extremely rich, dense chocolate truffle. No sugar or flour added either, just some raspberry puree and a little dollop of whipped cream. Wow, what a taste!

It's a little place called the Wild Plum Tearoom, on Buckhorn road. It's very good. They close for the season Dec. 13th, and reopen March 1st, which stinks. The dayhikes I did were mostly on unnamed trails this time. With all the leaves down you can see where all the old roads and railbeds were. I followed a few of those. I had a relatively close encounter with a bear. He was 30 ft. below me. I saw him, he saw me, we went in opposite directions.

I did see the most road carnage I've ever seen before on this trip. 18 dead deer on the highways in SC alone, one exploded goat in Ga., countless dead squirrels within GSMNP, and a woodchuck that I will miss. He was a regular on Glades road, where he lived next to a retention pond. Some schmuck in a beemer piffed him doing 15 over the limit. I was mad. Two dead coyotes, three foxes, several unidentified large birds, and some critters I have no idea if they were even mammals.

By the way, yes, I did have another large branch fall near me last night when I was tolling around Elkmont. The wind was kicking pretty good by that point, so it was inevitable.

Laurel blew out my candles for me. ;)

I spent an hour and a half trying on so many kinds of boots and I still didn't find some that really fit. The fitters recommendation? He said to get a pedicure, to reduce the calluses on my feet. He thinks that will eliminate the blisters I'm prone to getting at the bases of my toes. He's the first guy I've met who regularly gets a pedicure for non cosmetic reasons. Cool.
Right now HPM is trying to clean triple chocolate birthday cake off of a two year old. :D Good luck!
I got more Harry Potter books on cd, and my bro in law found a version of Tolkiens' "The Hobbit" on cd as well. I remember hearing some of it years ago on NPR.
