OK Dolts, I know you're gonna make fun of this...
BUT... how many of you took this standardized test throughout grade school when you were growing up? (bbinkley, I realize you have yet to get to high school...)

A bunch of states in the Midwest used this test. Who took it as a kid?

(And let me make the first joke: Iowa Basic Skills Test -- Can you walk and say "howdy" at the same time??

It's okay, the first line of the Alabama Basic Skills Test is "Congratulations! You're smart enough to know how to turn a page!"

I remember them.
I took the NJBST (New Jersey Basic Skills Test). We had hard questions like “Jerry is a month behind on his payments to his bookie, Vito. How many cement blocks does Vito need?”

I am, of course, very familiar with your "test". Damn good thing we won the cold war and they stopped shoving that "test" down our throats.
Thanks for all the trauma, Lizzy.

I went took them here in California during the 50s and 60s. I took several days each year or two. They wouldn't tell us our scores.

CAT tests for us in MI, when I was a kid. They still take skills tests, over several days, each year here. There's a website that parents can take the tests at somewhere. We got our scores mailed home every year.

I grew up in New York and we took the Iowa tests every year in school. They determined our IQ and what classes we could take depending on how we scored on the tests.

I hated them for some reason. They down right sux all forms of crusty a$$. I think the school latently used those to 'track' students and keep the bad apples together. I had my problems but I didn't need that test to tell me what my faults might be. To harsh a criticism for a fragil mind to handle at that age. They all but said I was stupid and that as parents you should stop paying for my schooling.

I'm still not in the bell tower so I quess they were wrong all along. Fascist's.

My oldest took the ITBS every year while in Catholic school. We have been home schooling for the last 3 years but still have him take the ITBS every year just to be sure we are doing our jobs as educators. It may not be the best test out there, but he has established benchmarks with that test.

I took the tests, except they had electronic devices hooked up to me that gave me little scocks when I got an answer wrong.

When you guys took them, was there a grubby, smoking VC army officer administering them? And, were you strapped to a mattress spring? Just wondering.

Iowa Basic Skills Test
Farmer Brown has 350 acres planted in corn. He gets an average yield of six ears per stalk, and there are an average 8,314 stalks per row.

When will the Des Moines Trust Bank foreclose on Farmer Brown if the price falls to 8 cents per bushel?

Those who pass this test will be eligible to work in the Agricultural Loan Department of the Des Moines Trust Bank. Those who fail will have to do the best they can to keep from losing the family farm.

Well, we have to assume a few things to figure your equation Geobeet. ist, we'll assume that is was a good year for harvest, and assume that at harvest, he got 175 ears of corn per buschel. Also, we'll assume that they planted narrow rows (20 inch rows), which yeild approximately 145 bushels per acre.

The Total yeild - 50,750 buschels per 350 acres,
At - 175 ears of corn per buschel, 148 buschels per acre.

Total ears of corn - 8,881,250

Total yeild buschel price (geobeets scenario)- $4,060

Total Yield buschel price (Iowa Oct. avg. price 2.2660) - $114,999.50

Avg. cost per acre - Iowa Farm Land - $3,000
x 350 acres = $1,050,000 total farm cost.

Mortgage Rate - (30 year loan, 6% fixed interest) $6,295 p/m or $75,540 per year

Gross Profit - $34,459.50

Unlimited corn on the cob - priceless.

Of course, if it's a family farm, the mortgage will be much less, unless they borrowed to get new equipment, but that could be offset by the government paying the farm not to grow crops on some acres..........etc, etc

In fifth grade I fudged the Iowas by randomly marking the multiple choices with my Number Two Pencil.

I was pissed about having to take the tests.

I don't recall hearing anything about the results.

Maybe they had seen that kind of thing before and figured I was just another smartA$$.

While we're working on our own version of Iowa Basic Skills, here's something you might want to check out. ('specially you, aero)

It's the geocaching page for the Buddy Holly "shrine" near Mason City. Look at some of the photos. It's smack dab in a cornfield, too.

I haven't been there yet. Soooon.... (hope they'll let you see it with having to get a membership!)

Also, regarding Buddy Holly? In my town, this ballroom burned down over the weekend (Matter's Ballroom). It was old and historic. It's were Buddy Holly played the night before his appearance at the Surf. Oh, the Surf still stands and has a celebration each year.
