I spent all day trying to delete all the garbage that got downloaded with the IMs. What a cluster#&%!$! I deleted both of them.” 4:40:01 PM 8/10/04 “rdanner1k on yahoo and rdanner2377 on aim” 4:55:37 PM 8/10/04 “DSL only costs $26.95 through Yahoo. It can't be worth what your saving to go through all that. Messengers don't do well on a slow dial-up though. Yahoo IM alway's froze up while I was on Juno. Got DSL and it works fine now.” 5:02:12 PM 8/10/04 “But isn't dsl the same as the highspeed dial up? How can a dsl line be faster than the hispeed if they both use the same phone line?” 5:11:35 PM 8/10/04 “youngathrt2002 on Yahoo divinityluvs2bp on aim..(I think)” 5:19:48 PM 8/10/04 “trailgem (aol) trailgem (yahoo) trailgem (msn)” 5:30:36 PM 8/10/04 “Gem, you should have a license plate that says Trailgem..” 5:36:45 PM 8/10/04 “nah, she needs one that says hikrbich!” 5:41:09 PM 8/10/04 “lol...trailgem isn't that great, but it's ALWAYS available. yeah, the plate would prolly avail. too.I like the hirbich better though” 5:44:48 PM 8/10/04 “over the bars - AIM Yes, I was wearing a helmet.” 5:50:56 PM 8/10/04 “has trillian stabilized?...they keep having problems staying up with msn and aol..they kept changing the coding to f up trillian” 6:04:53 PM 8/10/04 “PhntomSoul on AOSmell... This handle goes back to the fall of 1997 and carries some history: I had to eliminate the 'a' from Phantom so the name would fit within the 10-character maximum back then...” 6:10:58 PM 8/10/04 godzilla!!! 6:17:22 PM 8/10/04 “DSL actually has a seperate line that runs from your home to the server. Along voice lines the FCC limits data transmission speeds (56K), but DSL gives you your own personal data line just for using the internet. Transmission speeds are only limited by technical factors such as equipment and the length of the line. Most DSL servers only reach out for 2 miles to keep transmission speeds on the lines high. A lot of people see that DSL plugs into the same socket as your phone (using special filters) and think that it's limited to 56K but it's not. Also, cable (RoadRunner) is not a line dedicated just for YOUR use, like DSL. This means that your speed will vary with congestion since you are essentially sharing with your neighbor. Peak hours do not apply with DSL. It's your personal line and the speed is typically consistent. Hence the statement, "...up to twice as fast as DSL standard package." Between the lines, it's possible but not likely. In time your speed with cable will most likely decrease as they gain more customers while DSL will remain the same. No big deal though since most home users will never have that large of a demand for bandwith for a prolonged period of time. It's just a misleading statement. Now, this is not common information but knowing all this I got pretty heated when I went to the local Best Buy, out on Mall Woods Dr., looking for a router that uses your home phone lines (HomePNA) to network multiple computers in your home. The guy kept asking why I wanted to limit network transmission to 56K. I kept telling him that it would not happen but I really felt I shouldn't have to explain anything to the guy. If he's going to work in the computer department then he should understand computers! Everybody is allowed to not know, except the guy that's supposed to help with all my computer needs!” 6:18:37 PM 8/10/04 “Damn! That sounds like everything I'll ever need to know about connections. Thanks for taking the time to explain it so well. I can get around a computer but there's a lot I don't know. A LOT! thanks J.” 6:35:01 PM 8/10/04 “rangertarol on yahoo” 6:36:03 PM 8/10/04 “Actually, you have the same bottlenecks in both DSL and Cable connections; they just occur at different places. Cable is like a gigantic Ethernet Network, and you share it's available bandwidth resources with your entire neighborhood. The net result is that if everyone in your neighborhood is online, it's going to lag a bit. DSL does operate on the phone line grid, but requires a special type of phone line to be installed. Many more modern buildings are already wired for it, or "DSL ready". But since it operates at much higher frequency than the standard 8 kHz voice calls, DSL signals and voice signals can be separated with filters so they do not interfere with each other. Also, because DSL is not a voice call, it can transmit data at speeds much much faster than 56 kbps. While it is true that with DSL you have your own dedicated line, your internet traffic still has to be routed through your DSL provider's systems which is shared by everyone with DSL who's phone lines are routed thru that switching office. DSL PRO: More providers to choose from and service is way more competitive than cable. Also, you might still be able to get DSL even if you don't have a landline phone number, as long as an actual phone line is present in your home. DSL CON: In my experience, DSL has been slower than cable, but significantly. Also starts to get unstable (if it even works at all) if you live more than 2 miles from the Telephone company switching office. Also, if using a version of Windows prior to Windows XP, you need a 3rd-party PPPoE client program (usually provided by the DSL carrier) to connect, which have been known to interfere with various Internet software. Cable PRO: Distance to local office does not matter whatsoever. Also capable of providing multiple Mbps transfer speeds, although this can only really be enjoyed on local connections (with your cable provider itself -- for example, when I upload files to my webhost on Comcast.net), because the general Internet can only handle about 1.5 Mbps or so. Cable CONS: Expensive and not very competitive, as cable networks are still "controlled" monopolies in most neighborhoods. The average cable connection costs $50 per month, and the average wait time for local service, should it be required is about 1 week. Also not as available as DSL -- if you don't live in the suburbs, there's a chance you might not even be able to get it.” 6:47:24 PM 8/10/04 “AOL IM: ScorchFire Yahoo IM: Scorchess7 (I think?) I'm not at home to check.” 7:00:43 PM 8/10/04 “karofishes@aol” 7:16:18 PM 8/10/04 “Sorry, I wasn't trying to be bias. I just don't believe most users will see a noticable difference between the two services under "normal" circumstances. Assuming the phone company has not went past a 2 mile radius, the cable co. does not have too many people running through a single office, and the user is just doing normal web browsing. Once you begin to venture from what is expected then you may see a difference when downloading movies, pics, etc. That apply's to both types of service. My backlash was concerning the statement they make that it can be twice as fast. They know most people will think, "It 7:44:04 PM 8/10/04 “That was a typo...my bad. I meant to say that there really is no significant difference in speed between the two. And yes, cable providers will often advertise speeds of 6+ Mbps. The important thing to remember though is that is just capacity. The actual Internet itself, on average, cannot really handle speeds faster than 1-1.5 Mbps, which DSL is usually fully capable of, pending you subscribe to that level of service.” 7:51:14 PM 8/10/04 “Alright, for all you Yahoo-ligans, I've resurrected my YM. I haven't used it in forever because, well, prior to this, no one I knew was on there. So: YM: phntomsoul AIM: PhntomSoul” 8:11:55 PM 8/10/04 “Cable rawks, just move to a neighborhood with an older population :)” 9:33:02 PM 8/10/04 “Ivygal36-yahoo Ivygal36-aim Ivygal36-msn pathetic huh? I'm not at home to check." ScorchFire I lied. Yahoo is scorchfire7” 5:29:52 PM 8/11/04 Nigal “I've heard that as well. Your in Dayton right? I know a guy down the street from me that had both services and advised me to do with the DSL. I had been pro-cable up to that point. In today's world quantity is quickly becoming more important that quality. The only reason I got DSL is because they expanded the service area past 2 miles in my neigborhood (Kettering).” 7:38:22 PM 8/11/04 7:46:38 PM 8/11/04 “AOL instant message party online right now...
