nightvision vs inferred? “I wanted to get my husband binoculares... but i have found that there are two types.. at least i think there are... Nightvision vs inferred... anybody know the difference.. or the pros and cons????????” 12:08:07 PM 11/15/02 “Nightvision scopes use the available light, but just essentially "pump up the volume." Infrared scopes are built to see the heat coming from an object, which they then translate to a color in the human-visible spectrum, usually green. As to what the pros and cons are, not sure. I'm guessing that the nightvision would give you more detail, but like I said, that's a guess.” 12:18:09 PM 11/15/02 “Just what is is you are trying to infer?” 12:21:11 PM 11/15/02 “can you get night vision w/ regular vision as well?” 12:22:16 PM 11/15/02 bitpusher “thanks alot.. thats what i thought... nightvision uses the available light to enhance/wheras the inferred can be used in complet darkness...Now how in the world am i going to ask him What can i say it must be a guy thing.. more toys.. but i really appriciate your answers.. thanks” 12:22:19 PM 11/15/02 “This is another guess, but since the nightvision scopes/binocs use an electronics package to amplify the available light, I'd say yes, although you'd have to turn the amplification down during the day. Again, just a guess though.” 12:24:22 PM 11/15/02 fathergoose “stinker... who knows what he would want them for.. hunting and camping im assuming.. spying on the other gender when im not around?... just as long as he does not bring them home is fine..” 12:24:34 PM 11/15/02 “Some night vision devices use an infared illuminator. The terms are not mutually exclusive. You might check these out.” 12:25:02 PM 11/15/02 “They're great for attaching to your camera and taking pictures or movies in complete darkness. Oops. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that...” 12:28:01 PM 11/15/02 chili36 “thats exactly the briand name i was looking at... I found them at cabelias first than i found them at a better price at B&H photo out of new york... I use to use them often when i was a photographer..they have really good prices” 12:29:18 PM 11/15/02 “I think infrared will also detect and illuminate heat sources, like human bodies, as well as hidden light. While I was covering a reserve exercise, an otherwise dark tent with a woodstove and Coleman lanterns inside looked like a huge glowing neon sign with infrared/night vision. The bad guys who "attacked" the camp had a nice beacon to guide them around the defensive perimeter. The device also picked up human bodies as though they were glowing.” 12:59:19 PM 11/15/02 “You can obtain infrared illuminators / flashlights separately also, to really 'light up' your subject. I believe the heart of the other gizmo is known as an image intensifier (those wacky Astronomer types use them also). Didn't Sony have a video camera that easily saw through peoples' clothes? They finally perfected those X-Ray Specs from the back pages of the comic books... but it got yanked from the market.” 1:54:12 PM 11/15/02 “I think the term "infrared" is being mixed up with the notion of "thermal imagery". Infrared is a light on a spectrum not visible to the naked eye,it is used broadly to illuminate a wide area. Military vehicles wil use infrared headlights that appear to be black BUT with a pair of nightnision goggles that have an infrared option that can be switched on/off you can see the light. AN-PVS7 is one style that is does this.Infrared is also used in weapons aiming and sighting systems. A rifle mounted infrared target identifier (basically an IR laser pointer) can be used by a squad leader to direct fire to targets of importance in a firefight. Regular night vision is essentially an light amplifier (up to like 50,000x). If used in daylight or bright conditions SERIOUS eye injury can occur. I can recall the warnings on our NODS (night observation devices) that were quite stern. Thermal imaging (at least what we had) was NOT like the hollywood stuff. It did not work very well and certainly did not show imagizes like what is seen on TV. Those systems are VERY large and non-portable for a man.” 6:44:11 PM 11/15/02 Infared. “Check your spelling, please” 7:20:26 PM 11/15/02 “Infrared is correct.” 7:32:10 PM 11/15/02
