Here's the recipe for mushroom gravy for the loaf. Heat a heavy bottomed sauce pan and saute together: 2 Tbsp. margarine 1 Tbsp. minced onion 4 ozs. mushrooms thinly sliced Cook about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle with: 1/4 cup flour Stir well, then add slowly while stirring: 2 cups vegetable broth Cook until sauce begins to bubble. Per 1/4 cup: Calories 54, Protein 1 gr. Carb 5 gr. Fat 4 gr. Makes 2 cups” 7:38:51 AM 12/06/02 “Thank you very much Rich, they sound good. I do grow fresh herbs in the garden but I think this storm put an end to them for the season.” 8:52:17 AM 12/06/02 “Try Silk Mocha. It has become my new favorite drink. Less caffiene than coffee but still good for a buzz, and tasty.” 8:58:55 AM 12/06/02 “I haven't seen it in the store, but it is funny that should mention it, because I was just going to experiment making a coffee smoothie tonight (using Kaulua). Actually I'm one of those wierdos who don't like chocolate in my coffee. Does the Silk Mocha taste more like coffee or more like chocolate?” 9:04:42 AM 12/06/02 “Lyndy, An option to try with that Herbed loaf mixture is to form it into patties and brown them in a teflon pan with some oil and serve on rolls. It's pretty good that way and easier too. I would think that if you don't use the gluten flour as a binder and use eggs instead that you could substitute some bread crumbs for the flour.” 2:11:23 PM 12/06/02 “richb and Lyndy: I am enjoying this discussion, and the recipes from rich. I've ordered the book rich recommended. thanks” 2:30:47 PM 12/06/02 “Did you get the Vegan Nutrition book? I used to have a video tape from that doctor, but I don't know where it is. I may have loaned it out and haven't had it returned.” 2:40:50 PM 12/06/02 “Hi Pedxing! I'm down 5 lbs now, including the 4 I lost on the Maine hike. I used the Soy Vay teriyaki marinade for the TVP chunks for lunch and it was really good. And they have Silk vanilla and chocolate in the store here but not mocha. They had some other brand in cappacino but I didn't want to try it at this time.” 2:53:29 PM 12/06/02 “Sounds great Lyndy! Nice start! Rich: Yes, I got the pure and simple book. Thanks for the recommendation. Amazon shipped it two days ago.” 8:18:53 PM 12/06/02 “I hope you enjoy reading it. It's not really a cookbook, although it has some recipes. It's more of a why and how to book, to make sure people go about it in the right way. He also explains some benefits and how they take place in the body. There's some meal planning too. Most people think it's a diet of deprivation, but it isn't and he explains that in eating a wide variety of foods you can get what you need and feel better.” 8:28:42 PM 12/06/02 2:37:43 PM 12/07/02 “I wish BuffaloBabe would post about her rheumatoid arthritis and whether she was vegan before or after diagnosis. That link that Rich posted was very interesting in that the doctor who wrote it is quoted as saying that many r.arthritis sufferers are helped by cutting all dairy out of their diet. The pictures in the link are interesting too, showing the blood separating into lymph fluid and red blood cells, and showing the fat in arteries.” 11:38:59 AM 12/08/02 6:49:55 AM 12/09/02 “Heh, heh, funny thing about that site, everyone uses their real names instead of trail names or troll names. Whazzup with that? Yes we are different here.” 7:07:21 AM 12/09/02 “I didn't notice that, but no trolls sounds refreshing.” 2:25:23 PM 12/09/02 “Okay so I'm scrolling around in the vegetarian discussion board that RichB linked in an earlier post. Everyone is posting using real names. Lots of good questions and answers, including a discussion of the Soy Zone book where some posters say that too much soy protein is recommended. Then I spot a question posted by ... NewgirlI felt like a stalker because I had to open the thread and see if it was her or another new girl. Couldn't tell though. Good site RichB, I like it.” 10:59:53 AM 12/19/02 “I liked that too and found it interesting. My mom gets Good Housekeeping magazine and there was what looked to be a good stir fry recipe in there using tofu. It looks like an easy recipe so I hope to try it soon.” 5:16:42 PM 12/19/02 “I have to say that I'm using the soy TVP that I ordered a lot faster than I thought I would. I really like the medium sized chunks, they have a good texture much like chicken. I haven't had a chance to do the loaf yet because of so much holiday stuff. My girl scout troop sang at the nursing home in town and we had several practices to learn some new songs. The girls sang great and the residents loved them. I hope to bring the girls there a couple more times a year to spread some cheer.” 3:11:44 PM 12/21/02 “The chuncks are good form of TVP and I still did not see them for sale in any retail store. I wonder why they aren't available except through mail order.” 6:23:00 PM 12/21/02 “I tried the TVP herb loaf recipe that RichB posted and it was really good. I used corn flake crumbs and one egg instead of the gluten, and added BackBay seasoning (normally used for fish). It came out really good. I also found the Silk soylatte coffee flavored in an Atlanta grocery and tried it. Very yummy but has a lot of sugar. Very much like having a Kailua and Cream.” 7:19:00 PM 12/30/02 “Glad you liked the recipe. I didn't try that stir fry recipe yet, but when I do and if it seems good I'll post it.” 7:36:48 PM 12/30/02 “Tried Silk brand soy milk. Wasn't bad. How does soy milk keep, compared to 1% reg milk?” 8:43:43 AM 7/15/07 “It will keep 7 to 10 days after opening.” 8:50:27 AM 7/15/07 “The question is not how long it will keep. The question is "How do you know when it's gone bad?" Blech” 8:54:47 AM 7/15/07 “Yes, I was wondering that, rev. ;-) last edited: 7/15/07 9:05:55 AM” 9:01:51 AM 7/15/07 “I found this from the Silk soymilk website. The package looks abnormally bloated When poured, the soy milk appears to have thickened slightly The color of the soy milk has changed (chocolate turns lighter and vanilla may look beige) It is so thick that it won't pour easily, or it looks like a milk shake and has curds or lumps Any smell resembling dying flowers, sour milk or chemicals A slightly "off" or beany flavor, or a bitter, metallic, earthy, grassy or extremely sweet taste I don't use the packaged soymilk, instead I mix my own soymilk each day using a powdered soymilk.” 9:03:21 AM 7/15/07 “If you can eat it with a spoon... DON'T” 9:05:52 AM 7/15/07 “we've had opened soy for at least 10 days - no problem. if you're having a difficult time with the taste try vanilla. How some one can say "yuck" to soy milok as oppossed to a fluid frtom a cows tit is beyond me. ;)” 11:00:55 AM 7/15/07 “How some one can say "yuck" to soy milok as oppossed to a fluid frtom a cows tit is beyond me. ;)” bearmagnet 2:00:55 PM 7/15/07 Back at ya over some mashed, squeezed, manipulated, flavored, plant juice. I'll take the moo juice any day.” 11:06:21 AM 7/15/07 “All those factory cows have Mastitis too. Heat and pasteurize it all you want, you're drinking quite a bit of pus. Cheer! ;)” 1:41:08 PM 7/15/07 “I had a stage in my younger life where everything was soy. Soy this, soy that. I finally got the the point where if I had to eat another soybean product I was going to puke. Now granted it was a good number of years ago. But that kind of thing stays with you. >:?) Whatever floats your boat dude...” 1:46:40 PM 7/15/07 “I agree. Who am I to say you shouldn't drink pus? well, except for the fact that those animals are treated so inhumanely. Lab mice have more rights. But then again some people get off on that.” 1:53:01 PM 7/15/07 “there is an energy bar called soyjoy that is great.” 3:40:04 PM 7/15/07 “I like soy milk with my cereal, but won't put it in hot coffee (can be OK for iced coffe, but hot I'd prefer it black).” 4:07:44 PM 7/15/07 “I like the vanilla flavored soy milk on cereal. I thought they was an expiration date on the carton of soy milk just like on reg milk?” 4:23:44 PM 7/15/07 “That's a sell by date. How does soy milk keep, compared to 1% reg milk?” 4:39:49 PM 7/15/07 “I use the unflavored/unsweetened on cereal. I also use it to substitute for milk in other recipes. Compared to regular milk, I think it keeps much longer. If you need to keep it longer, just buy powered soy milk. When I go backpacking, one of my favorite snacks and breakfasts is a ziplock with about a cup and a half of cereal with a third of a cup of powered soy milk. Dump in a cup (or so) of water, shake it up and eat it up. Definitely not as good as real milk, but palatable. (I am now lactose intolerant as a side effect of giardia.)” 4:52:13 PM 7/15/07 “I just looked; my refer has three different soymilks ,one wheat, one rice and an almond. I mix all kinds of combinations according to use. Can't handle that nilly vanilly kind. Watch to amount of soy guys - the 'Energizer' bunny owns 'Playtex' and you might need one of their products.” 5:36:38 PM 7/15/07 “We buy our Silk at Sam's Club. We go thru that much. I buy cows milk to cook with once in a blue moon, and that is it. Our soy milk is never in the house long enough to go bad.....” 6:27:41 AM 7/16/07 “I have to buy milk in the 1/2 gallon size. Milk spoils on me ever time I get a gallon. I need to only buy by the quart. That's why I am so intererested in how soy keeps, that and getting rid of some of the fat in my diet.” 6:51:31 AM 7/16/07 “I love the Silk chocolate....yummmmmmm vanilla is good for cereal.....” 6:51:37 AM 7/16/07 “SS, have you tried the soy milk/drink that doesn't have to be put in the fridge until you open it. It comes in a box that is about a quart size. I wish I could remember the brand name. I think it is West something” 7:05:22 AM 7/16/07 “I have seen some that size, but it it rice milk...which isn't too bad.....” 7:08:39 AM 7/16/07 “I have gotten into the Primal Treats TVP jerky. Anyone else tried these? Soy Hickory is my favorite but the Thai is pretty good as well. Best fake meat I have found and each treat has 10 grams of protein.” 8:38:51 AM 7/16/07 “I love the chocolate soy milk! There are several brands and flavors availabe in the shelf cartons. I have a Silk Chocolate Soymilk carton that has been sitting on my desk for a week or so and the expiration date is 10 Oct '07. SS, I had to cut dairy out of my diet because of becoming lactose-intolerant due to a bout with giardia. It cut a lot of fat from my diet. My cholesterol went from 260 to 203, and I have lost about 15 pounds. I am not sure if the weight loss is from the giardia or the lactose-free diet. Right now, milk products are a bad thing. The odd thing is that during the reduction of my cholesterol, because of the effects of giardia (a lot of bathroom time,) I was eating everything in sight-including a lot of lean meats. During the giardia onslaught, I could eat meats and real sugary stuff with out much gastrointestinal distress, so I did.” 8:45:37 AM 7/16/07 “As far as I know - All soy milk has to be refrigerated after opening. At which point it "stays fresh" 7-10 days. I know the bigger, non-box containers are kept like milk in stores but I think it might be a display/marketing/convenience thing only. Thos containers have the same directions as the box - refrigerate after opening...7-10 days.” 9:07:31 AM 7/16/07 “Ewker, I buy the shelf stable versions of Silk soy milk for winter use and car camping. You do have to frig it after opening, but it is nice for long term storage.” 7:54:19 PM 7/16/07 “sarbar and BM, I said it had to be put in the fridge after opening SS,have you tried the soy milk/drink that doesn't have to be put in the fridge until you open it.” 8:07:38 PM 7/16/07 “I used to looove Silk soymilk, until I found this out: http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/oca/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=4756 Now I get Edensoy, it's also extremely delicious and I think it was the first soymilk in North America.” 9:08:10 AM 7/17/07 “I heard on the news last night that they pushed back labeling the origin of food until 2008. China is the source for a lot more than just soybeans. They are taking over the food additive business along with apples, wheat gluten and many other things.” 10:21:10 AM 7/17/07
