Their home region gets all the pollution from production and none of the economic benefits.
The American oil companies involved say its not their fault or concern......."we are responsible only to our share-holders"

In the Belgian Congo, in the bad old days, local native workers would sometimes displease their colonial masters with poor production.
"Overseers", sometimes and sometimes not from a rival ethnic group, would be sent in to hang a few heads on stakes to inspire harder work.
The Belgians would play the ethnic groups off against one another......Hutu and Tutsi, for example.
