“I wish I could go and help these poor animals. They say this is worst then the Alaska spill http://www.msnbc.com/news/836553.asp">Oil Spill” 8:37:10 AM 11/19/02 “That does suck mapleleaf. I lived in Valdez a few years after the spill. The place was teeming with wildlife. It seems that nature is able to clean up after our messes, but in the long run, who can tell.” 8:48:58 AM 11/19/02 “Just another example of man's ability to trash his environment. Too sad...” 8:49:48 AM 11/19/02 “BB, yes it does but it also can not bring back the life that they ruin. we lost a couple of species(sp) along with that oil. Ill find that info on it if you want. i think when you start leaning about ALL the things that are in our Oceans, you cant believe what is being done to it with these frigging oil spills.” 8:55:23 AM 11/19/02 Nature will find a way to vomit on us... “for all our misdeeds upon her. You wait and see...She even begun to get even.” 8:56:33 AM 11/19/02 we lost a couple of species(sp) along with that oi “maple....sorry but i don't believe that. really?” 9:00:21 AM 11/19/02 “Maple - I'm afraid to look - I don't want to see the suffering animals. dawn” 9:03:17 AM 11/19/02 They can line a beer can!!! “Can't they come up with a 'liner' for those tankers? I know most are doubled walled but I'm picturing a 'liner' that would have a coating (kevlarish fabric) on the inside that would be impermable to oil and provide that added protection against ruptures.” 9:06:39 AM 11/19/02 “I cant find the item where i read about the lost species, but here is alot more detailed info. Oil Spill Info ps ill try and find the story today.” 9:13:04 AM 11/19/02 Venting “1. Oil companies suck. 2. Mean people suck. 3.People that leave trash behind when they pack up to leave from a campsite or along the trail or anywhere in the forrest SUCK! Sorry, just had to get that out.” 10:14:41 AM 11/19/02 “Did any of you hear the bit on the lawsuit against Exxon-mobil, on NPR yesterday? Some little indoniasian country has a natural gas processing area, exxon does the work for them. The villagers are being tortured by the guards. Some poor guy had burning rubber poured all over his body, another man lost four fingers whike being interogated. People are bing maimed and raped. Scarey stuff. There's a class action suit against exxon-mobil for injuries. I think I'll not go to Mobil anymore. The wankers at Exxon say they can't be held responcible because they're just contractors. I bet if they refused to do the work unless the locals were treated better, some of the violence might stop. Arresting someone because they're in the wrong area is one thing...disfiguring them is another.” 11:06:52 AM 11/19/02 “I'll bet the tanker that went down by spain wasn't double hulled. There are still many single hulled tankers out there.” 11:12:56 AM 11/19/02 Colonialism “That sort of thing has played out all over the colonised world. In Central America coffee/banana/fill-in-the-blank workers who try to organize/protest for a better life they are subject to rape/torture/murder. In Nigeria natives of a certain oil-producing area are regularly abused. Their home region gets all the pollution from production and none of the economic benefits. The American oil companies involved say its not their fault or concern......."we are responsible only to our share-holders" In the Belgian Congo, in the bad old days, local native workers would sometimes displease their colonial masters with poor production. "Overseers", sometimes and sometimes not from a rival ethnic group, would be sent in to hang a few heads on stakes to inspire harder work. The Belgians would play the ethnic groups off against one another......Hutu and Tutsi, for example. Colonialism is alive and well! "First World" consumers benefit from this use of cheap labor.” 11:26:36 AM 11/19/02 “I know it happens. It still p!sses me off. I also heard that the Spanish are suspected of purposely spilling that oil out in the middle of the ocean, instead of dealing with it in their ports.” 11:29:12 AM 11/19/02 “Take heart. It is tragic but not final. During the time of the Valdez catastrophe I heard a wildlife biologist interviewed on CBC radio. She said that sudden tragedies have far less effect of wildlife than the slower but constant deterioration of their habitat. Wildlife can bounce back if given a chance.” 2:47:20 PM 11/19/02 “Gremlin, what about sudden tragedies plus constant deterioration? I don't think constant deterioration is going to stop soon. Once any species is wiped out...that's it for them.” 3:14:19 PM 11/19/02 3:31:34 PM 11/19/02 “Now that does suck!!!!!! 8|” 4:21:54 PM 11/19/02 “In Central America coffee/banana/fill-in-the-blank workers who try to organize/protest for a better life they are subject to rape/torture/murder. - Tom Terrific 11:26:36 AM 11/19/02 How dreadful! Where'd they ever learn to do something like that?” 4:22:36 PM 11/19/02 “I could post about 1000 links to all the horrors that are caused by stupid sh!!t that humans cause and the animals pay for it.” 4:23:15 PM 11/19/02 Heartbreaking “What a tragedy!” 4:32:26 PM 11/19/02 “It is horrible... and people were attacked as being environmental nuts when they complained about single hull tankers. On a different note, I gotta say I go with Stratdewd on his point... I don't think any species has been made extinct by any single oil spill. I know many species were hard hit... is there evidence of spill related extinctions? Just about any species that could be wiped out by one oil spill would have to have been in very rough shape to begin with.” 5:05:36 PM 11/19/02 “I may not be wording it right. But i do know that there was some kind of animal or might have been an invertebrate that was lost. I promise to find out all the proper info and post it for you all” 6:04:05 PM 11/19/02 “kewl!” 9:31:57 PM 11/19/02 “yeah phaed, there's not any species in the ocean that only lives in that tiny of an area to be wiped out by a single spill.” 7:51:12 PM 11/22/02 “Strat, did I even post on this thread? Are you losing your mind, or what?” 10:19:36 PM 11/22/02 oh....brain pootie “On a different note, I gotta say I go with Stratdewd on his point... I don't think any species has been made extinct by any single oil spill. I know many species were hard hit... is there evidence of spill related extinctions? Just about any species that could be wiped out by one oil spill would have to have been in very rough shape to begin with." pedxing sorry, i meant ped. i lost my mind long ago, btw....” 11:35:14 PM 11/22/02 Strat! “You got me mixed up with Fade??? You're s'posed to be apologizing to me! Last time I ever agree with you in public! (j/k both of youze guyz)” 12:01:10 PM 11/23/02 “lmao pedhead!” 12:02:49 PM 11/23/02 “TUCSON, Arizona (AP) -- A 45-year-old woman collapsed and died days after learning her son had been killed in Iraq, and just hours after seeing his body. Results of an autopsy were not immediately released, but friends of Karen Unruh-Wahrer said she couldn't stop crying over losing her 25-year-old son, Army Spc. Robert Oliver Unruh, who was killed by enemy fire near Baghdad on September 25. "Her grief was so intense -- it seemed it could have harmed her, could have caused a heart attack. Her husband described it as a broken heart," said Cheryl Hamilton, manager of respiratory care services at University Medical Center, where Unruh-Wahrer worked as a respiratory therapist. Unruh, a combat engineer, had been in Iraq less than a month when he was shot during an attack on his unit.” 9:23:46 PM 10/05/04 “Yeah, the stress could have pushed her over the edge, but it sounds like she may have had an existing heart problem. Nevermind the woman, I feel bad for the husband that's left behind without his wife and child now. I hope he has more kids or family around him and is not left alone.” 9:29:50 PM 10/05/04 “this is about chernobyl. i couldn't watch the whole thing. http://todayspictures.slate.com/inmotion/essay%5Fchernobyl/?GT1=8019” 8:34:39 AM 4/26/06 “I had to shut the door to my office. This is the sadest thing I have ever seen.” 9:47:57 AM 4/26/06 “Tough to watch.” 10:14:25 AM 4/26/06
