New to East LA area
Hi everyone, I just moved to East LA, coming from San Diego. I am originally from Brazil, where I've done most of my hiking on mountains by the beach...I did a search on hiking, and came across this website, and decided to join!

I live in Sierra Madre, I see the San Gabriel Mountains from my window, and would love to meet knew people to go hiking in this area :)

Welcome! Can I add you to our "TT'ers by State" list?

Please do!

I'm still figuring out how this works... I have to constantly check for new messages, is that correct?

Well, no, only if you are in the mood for chatting. You can post, "gotta go, see y'all later" if you were in the middle of a discussion, too.

Gypsy, that is the hard part, remembering which posts you've posted to and checking back with them. Its especially difficult after a weekend away.

So what do you suggest is the best way for me to meet people in my area?

Gypsy, you gotta watch out for the "men" here. hehehe

Some will think East LA means Eastern Lower Alabama.

.... I know... strange, ain't it??

Welcome!!

We have a large Southern Cal contingent. Keep this near the top and they'll pick it up.

Ok, should I rephrase to "Pasadena, Ca!"

Let's see... what does San Gabriel Valley mean to you ? :)

Gypsy, plan a group overnight backpacking trip, something fun and simple, as a party gathering, sort of, and post it here. Lots of people will chime in with suggestions and you will get a group together, and will "meet" others as well, even if they don't end up joining your group hike.

Ah well, an overnight backpacking trip has to be very well planned because I am a mom of two kids! Overnight camping I usually do with the Boy Scouts! ha!

But I'd definitely love to go to some new hiking trails in the San Gabriel Mountains. I've done a few...

Hey, there are some scout parents here. And a few Eagle scouts, too.

Whatever you do, please remember that dogs do not belong in the backcountry. Thank you.

San Gabriel Mountain Hiking
Gypsy,

You might want to pick up John Robinson's book "Trails of the Angels...100 Hikes in the San Gabriels."

I am 40 miles south of LA, and my wife and I have used his book extensively for hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains. The directions are accurate, and his trail descriptions are pretty up to date.
I think he might underestimate some of the distances, but it always seems like that at the end of a hike anyway.

Here is one of my WEBSHOTS pages of San Gabriel hike pics.

I tried to hike up Baden-Powell but was chased down by a fierce lightning storm. Does that count?

Hello Gypsi-

Here's my journal if you're interested in seeing the king of thing that tends to happen when you take a chance with these folks: Digital Drifter

The mountains change you. They bring you peace and somehow remind you that everything is going to be okay.

Hi Gypsi,
I'm south of LA (Torrance) but live in the Sierra (in my tent or truck) on the weekends. When I was raising my son, I dayhiked all over the local mountains.

We all have our own pace, gypsi. The point of it all is just to do it.

Here are some wise words of a man long ago.

"Another glorious Sierra day in which one seems to be dissolved and absorbed and sent pulsing onward we know not where. Life seems neither long nor short, and we take no more heed to save time or make haste than do the trees and stars. This is true freedom, a good practical sort of immortality. " - John Muir

Memorize these words. Live them. Make them your own and do not look back.

Sierra Madre is a very nice place and right at the foot of the San Gabriels.

Welcome. Our Boy Scout Troop hiked near you out of Chantry Flats many times. Also hiked to Henniger Flats. Great view of LA!

Keep watching the threads, or even plan a hike and see what happens.

I'm not familiar to all the possible hikes in the area, I have read about a bunch of them online and would love to try them out... will definitely keep an eye for when someone plans a hike in this area, or as you said, I'll try posting a new thread soon to see if I manage to get some people interested in trying one of the hikes one of these weekends.... suggestions are very welcome!
