Cubeville trip report

“I woke with a feeling of glee - Today is a workday! JOY! The following is the first in a series of journal reports from the front lines of America's Corporate House of Boredom:

I got up, I showered (because my boss started requiring it), dressed (my wife requires that), ate breakfast (no one requires that, but I do it anyway), and drove to work.

The sun does not shine until after I get here, and will go down before I leave, so my day will consist of a dark car and fluorescent lights, sort of like a lab rat being shipped.

My gear for this trip includes the following:

1. a thermos coffee mug (the sopoforic effects of the sameness of Cubeville have to be offset somehow)
2. A digital Camera (My coworkers think I'm crazy already, why not give em something to talk about? more on this later.)
3. A bottle of over-the-counter pain relievers (headaches here are rarely cured by them, but what the hey).

After declaring my intent to document the work environment to my coworkers, they all shifted uncomfortably in their seats, wondering if this would be another instance of me doing something "weird". Ahhh, the simple pleasure of the nervous stares of my people. Life is good. I haven't had this sense of anticipation since the guy in the next row brought in a whoopie cushion as a gag gift, and unknowingly left it unattended.

Anyway, I figure the project of truly documenting Cubeville should be an ongoing effort, and today, I'll start with the cast of characters.

Here in our cube-division we're downloading cartoon .wav files and puting them onto the mechanical engineers computers when they're not around, and eating chips and salsa with XXXhot El Yukateco sauce.
Did I mention our manager is out of town today?”

“I had the cleaning lady come in this morning. I'm expecting company this afternoon.”

“Was that a picture of newgirl I saw on your desk?

You might want to get rid of it before company shows up.”

“No, Chief, it was the newspaper. You probably had them confused.”

“I like seeing the "thebackpacker.com" banner on your monitor, aero....”

“HeeeHeee!”

“You may find this hard to believe, but my cubicle was built by "Prison Industries."”

“Oh My Gawd! Hilarious! This is too funny. I wish I had a web cam. If you guys saw where I work, you would die. BTW, Aero the comment about the newspaper being confused for me was great.”

“HA!! the newspaper...now i get it!”

“Um, I did a little detective work and discovered what that snapshot on aero's bulletin board really is. I tell you, these Montana people are a little odd.

Aero - glad to see somebody's desk is just as cluttered as mine. I think I'm the only right-brained person in my entire office.”

“Okay, as long as it is for certain that we aren't going to be viewing the crotch shots of your co-workers. They'd really think you were weird then!!! LOL!”

“Phaedrus - that was hilarious. I think this same scene (our hero snapping photos of uncomfortable coworkers) was left on the editing room floor of "Office Space".

Aero - I jealous of your work duds. Trail pants, trail shoes, watch out for the cotton sweatshirt though - I guess if you felt a little hypothermic you could start burning some of those TPS reports piled in your office.”
