I need help from you fine people. :) I want to purchase a down jacket. Which one do you think is the best? I looked at Patagonia and right now that is probably my first choice. I mostly just want it for wearing around town, but I want it to be versatile.
Suggestions please?

i don't know about spending this kind of money for around town but western mountaineering has a BAD down jacket.
for around town maybe check out St. John's Bay or LL Bean or eddie bauer.

The down jacket Geoge Costanza wore in the liquor shop rocks. Remember when he knocked over all the wine bottles. Too funny. And then Kramer slipped and fell in it. HA!

I compared a bunch of them a couple of years ago and got a Feathered Friends Volant Jacket. I just checked their site for the link and Helios Jackets are on sale....

Their Icefall Parka and Rock & Ice Parkas were a bit more heavy-duty than I needed.

I'm going to get the one that I want, even if I have to save a little longer. :) I want to be able to wear it at night around camp and stuff too. Does anyone have the Patagonia one?

I just got a (woman's) Mountain Hardwear. I haven't tried it out in really cold weather but it kept me warm watching the meteor showers the other morning.

Check MEC. They have some nice down jackets that are reasonable when you consider the Canadian exchange rate. I heard the quality is good too. I like the Cygnus 700, baffled, microfiber for around $190.

A few years ago, I picked up a solid blue down-filled Gore-Tex winter coat at a second hand store for $7. It was hardly used and stylish. I've had good luck with finding winter coats in those places. I wore that thing for 3 years before I stopped wearing it. It never wore out.

What about Woolrich? I have the Cedar Edge vest and love it! Maybe the Cedar Edge jacket would be a good idea. Anybody a Woolrich fan?

Down Jacket
I bought a MARMOT down jacket off of Ebay that I love. Never wear it hiking since it is too hot. Occasionally for breaks, when it is very very cold. I prefer a solstice uninsulated breathable parka & layer it with 300 wgt fleece. I also use this parka for year round rain gear.

OK. I'm a little slow, but I just found out that Western Mountaineering makes jackets.

Any reviewers here?

Best for you may not be best for me.

I got an EMS Down Jacket for about $60. I am sure it is not as good as the Western Mountaineering, but it meets my needs and the $160 left over was about the price I paid to get both Crampons and Snowshoes on closeouts.

Do you really need that top name brand stuff ? sure it is better, but sometimes the money can be better spent getting out there.

I have a MARMOT parka that looks like that on the inside, but smooth on the outside. Heavier material on the outside too as I am rough on things. Like the wind skirt inside & the hood. This replaces another fairly expensive goose down coat/parka that I've had for 15 to 20 years. Over that span, it was cheap & kept me very warm.

I have a No brand "down sweater" from Campmor, paid $50. It's never let me down. I'm not sure why it's called a sweater though...looks and feels like a coat to me.
