The Phillies
Just announced this afternoon.

Scott Who?

That moves Placido Polanco to second (his natural position) and makes Marlon Anderson expendable. As Daily News columnist Bill Conlin said, it ends Marlon's "reign of error."

One down two to go! Step right up Jim and Tom.

For Whom the Bell Tolls

Make his fight on the hill in the early day
Constant chill deep inside
Shouting gun, on they run through the endless grey
On the fight, for they are right, yes, by who's to say?
For a hill men would kill, why? They do not know
Suffered wounds test there their pride
Men of five, still alive through the raging glow
Gone insane from the pain that they surely know

For whom the bell tolls
Time marches on
For whom the bell tolls

Take a look to the sky just before you die
It is the last time you will
Blackened roar massive roar fills the crumbling sky
Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry
Stranger now, are his eyes, to this mystery
He hears the silence so loud
Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be
Now the will see what will be, blinded eyes to see

For whom the bell tolls
Time marches on
For whom the bell tolls

No man is an island,
if a clod wash off from England, Europe is the lesse. Oh, do not ask for whom the bell tolls. The bell tolls for thee.

John Donne during a sermon when a funeral bell tolled at another church.

Hemingway's
'For Whom the Bell Tolls' about the Spanish Civil War was a warning to us all that if the Fascists won in Spain, all the world was in danger. Hemingway was labelled a communist by many and had trouble getting back into the U.S. - and that is as close as I will come to talking politics.

No folks, the thread is titled: For whom the Bell toils, not For whom the bell tolls. It's a play on words. You see, the Phillies signed David Bell Sunday, so the Phillies will be For whom the Bell toils, get it?

Both the Inky and Dreary Snooze stories today really paint a glowing picture of Bell. It things turn out like they project, getting rid of Rolen might be the best thing that's happened since Pete Rose came to town.

There was no questioning Scott's talent, but he made himself into another head case, and I think he spent way too much time sulking last season. Placido Polanco gave up nothing on defense and his hitting was solid. The guy's a gamer, and sounds like Bell is too.

Funny, but when that cancer in the clubhouse comment got loose, I had to agree, and I can almost bet it was either Pratt or Hollins who said it.

One of the things mentioned in one of the articles was that the Mariners won without Griffey, A-Rod, and Johnson. When Bell left, they didn't make the playoffs. Which proves that baseball is a team sport, not just a star or two hitting for average or striking people out. It's the clutch hitting that counts, driving runs in, and winning games, not striking guys out.

And the Phillies showed last season that they need to learn how to move runners. So many sacrifice situations went wasted, and the innings ended with three men on. Not the way to win games!

So I am a bit excited about Bell. Thome and Glavine would be icing on the cake, but I think this guy Bell can help the team, both in presence on the field and in the clubhouse, and in clutch hitting.

Brooks Robinson is generally conceded to be the best defensive third baseman in history, while Mike Schmidt is considered the best all-round third baseman. I would take Brooks over Mike because Brooks was a clutch hitter. He did not hit for power, but he could go downtown. He did not hit for average, because he sacrificed a lot. He was just a solid team player who you wanted to see at the plate with runners in scoring position. Bell sounds like that kind of guy, although he's certainly not the defensive third baseman Brooks was.

Rolen had the tools to surpass both Brooks and Mike. It's just a shame he got such an inflated opinion of himself, because when he left here his numbers stunk out loud.
