Gear: Snow Shoes ???
I think I can justify buying insolated boots, because I'll use them again. I'm thinking of the Vasque Artic Insulated Winter Boots. I currently use the vasque clarions so I figure I'll stay with the brand that works.

Snow shoes on the other hand I have very few ideas. I heard some one say something about renting them. How do you plan on doing that? And where?
Other wise I have no idea what to look for in buying snow shoes, other than I want cheap ones. Since I probably will only wear them this once. Hopefully I will have more winter trips but I cant justify spending 200+ on them yet. So far I have found Tubbs Recreational Discovery 21. What do you think?

The 21 will not hold weight over 150 lbs.

To carry gear and you get a 30 inch I thihk you can get a set for $129 at REI.

I'm thinking that I will only buy them if snow is allready on the ground.

In NJ we haven't had real snow in 4 years. I have no idea what the dacks are like in feb

ask pennsy Tea, they have much snow from what I hear. Check out ebay dude, I'm currently bidding on some shoes. You can find some for under $100. Just don't bid against me... lol.

Le Subtil, swears that the old wooden tennis racket style work for him, but that's in MI. I think the daks call for a more technical shoe. CMB sounds on ttrack, but what do I know, never used any yet.

Tom Terrific rented snowshoes at an outfitter near last year's FYAO trip. He called ahead of time to reserve a pair and picked them up on the way. When the trip destination is finalized, I'm sure we'll be able to come up with a phone number of an outfitter nearby. You could check out EMS and Campmor to see if they rent.

As far as snow in Feb, they have snow now. Check out www.viewsfromthetop.com for NY trail conditions.

And for the old wooden tennis racket style snowshoes, Tommy T's newphew brought them last year. He had so many problems with them that I told him they would be firewood if he brought them again. ;o)

I think Artex just got a pair of those Vasque shoes. They should work out well. I have Columbia Titaniums that worked fine for me last year.

Tea, get a set of Tubbs Altitude 30 (The ones I have), or Altitude 25 snowshoes...you'll need the bigger footprints if you carry gear.

I think those Vasque boots look great! As for the snowshoes it doesn't hurt to rent a pair first to try them out. I have a pair of the MSRs and I really like them.

Tea --

1. The daks aren't NJ. At elevation there can be tons of snow.

2. I some (all???) areas of the ADK snowshoes or skis are REQUIRED back country equip and you will be fined by a ranger if you don't have them.

3. A weekend rental is $20 or so. I have gotten them from the local EMS. There is a shop "the Mountaineer in Keene Valley that rents them. The Outpost at the Adirondak Loj has a supply.

4. Were I you, I would plan on skiing in, with snowshoes strapped to my sled/pack.

Skiing is fine on packed trails . . .but once you head into the woods to take a squirt. Or try to pack down a base to set up your tent, you will wish you had something besides just skiis.

This is especially true at elevation. Clearly, last year was a disaster snow-wise, even up north.

Tea...
definitely rent a pair of shoes, before you buy. I tried a few and learned the hard way on FYAO I that certain bindings, for example, will freeze up and be useless in some conditions.
I bought a great pair of Tubbs, that I love! (thank you, bpbaby!)

Buy the boots, rent the shoes...there are always rental places around. Almost any outfitter up North will have them.
no worries, mon. ;o)
