I was planning to head to the AT Sunday for a very short day hike (another moral victory). I could move that up to Saturday if you want to join.

I was thinking in the area of Bake Oven Knob/Baer Rocks for a short jaunt. I have to be careful not to overdo it like I did Sunday. By the weekend I may also be in better shape. I'll just have to see how it goes, but I am thinking short and sweet - under five miles at most.

It is on Blue Mountain north of Allentown and west of Lehigh Gap. You go up 309, then take a flock of back roads to get to the parking area.

It would probably work best if I meet you in the Lansdale area. What are your plans?

Im driving my older daughter home in the early am. then go see her boyfriend and stay there for a little bit. then i can go for a short hike. i cant do an all day hike but maybe a couple of miles. if this messes up your plans then go and have a great time!!

No, I can meet you in Lansdale or somewhere. You can follow me up, and when the hike is over you can head over I-78 for the Big Apple. Like I said, it will only be a few miles, perhaps two hours at the most. How's that sound?

Nope. I was thinking we could meet somewhere along the line of 309. The other issue is what time you want to meet, considering that it gets dark early and it would take a good hour to get there once we hook up.

Harleysville is west and north of Lansdale, actually away from 309.

The other alternative is to meet in Lansdale and head up the Turnpike (probably faster). I have no idea where would be a good placed to meet in Lansdale. I think there's a McDonald's along 63 somewhere near the heart of town, but my memory is not overly confident of this. Do you have any ideas?

Geo, you probably know this, but...

From the large parking area on Bake Oven Knob Road, you can go south 1.5 miles to Bear Rocks, or north about half a mile to Bake Oven Knob. At Bear Rocks you have to do some climbing to get to the top and enjoy the views. Nothing that would be a problem for most people with two good wheels, but this may be a challenge for you, depending on how far your recovery has progressed.

There are pics on my webshots page under "AT: 309 to Lehigh Gap."

I took my kids up there on Father's Day, and we did both hikes. It was a nice time.

OK, the Bear Rocks pics are spread between two albums, "AT: 309 to Lehigh Gap" and "AT: 309 to Lehigh Gap 2." Look at album 2, the "Fido" picture, for the best view of what you'd have to climb to enjoy the views there. The "get my gun" picture is NOT representative of what you would have to climb, that one is purely optional. :)

Those are both potential targets Fritz. I've hung out in both places. Baer Rocks (named for a guy by that moniker, not a bear) is an old favorite. I know the scramble. Bake Oven is also a scramble. It all depends on time, how I feel, and the other variable, weather. We're due for snow tomorrow night, so if it's icy up there I'm not going anywhere.
Geobeet

Not likely Maple, although I would like to. I will have all the kids that day, and if the weather is good I will probably drag them either to the Pinnacle or to the Jersey side of the Delaware Water Gap.

It is indeed open to anybody who wants to hike with Da Gimp on the Road to Rehab. I don't expect to be skipping down the trail with my usual aplomb.

The issue remains a meeting place. Another alternative is to just go up 309 to that German restaurant on top of the mountain and meet in the parking lot, then hike to the Knife Edge, or as far toward the Knife Edge as we can get. Otherwise we are still looking for a place in Lansdale along 63, heading toward the Turnpike entrance, and I am not familiar enough with the area to know what is available.

or is Lansdale Tpike closer or at least easier to get to where we want to go

Suggest you meet at the parking lot of the hotel across the street from the Lansdale Turnpike interchange. You probably want to go up the Tpk to Allentown, then 78 West to 100 North to ???.

i have to go back to harlysville when the hike is over, so it dosnt matter where we meet to go to the hike.
So Lansdale Tpike it is!
as for the time id like to try to shoot for 10:00am. just remember that im driving in from Ny and need to drop my daguhter off.

Well you should slow the car down when you drop her off.

Remember to wear something with blaze orange. I think I'll pack my old running vest. They'll have a time convincing the judge they were shooting at a fat deer wearing an orange vest carrying trekking poles and limping.

It's good for me. You have my cell phone number in case you are running late, you can give me a call.

The only issue I might have would be if the snow that falls on the trail turns to ice by Saturday. If we get out there and it's icy, we'd have to bag it. (We could always repair to EMS at the mall and buy more gear, then have an Orange Julius and something to eat.)

..whatever you decide is fine with me..
...yes...I might be able to go...not 100% sure but just keep posting the details and i'll let you guys know by the weekend...

I live in the Valley Forge area near a town called Trappe...in fact my house looks out onto Rt 113....i'm about 10 miles down the road so to speak from Harleysville.

Anyhow....i'm familar with the RT 309 crossing of the AT...I was just there a couple of weeks ago...it's real easy to find...like geobeet said there's a restaurant at the top of the mountain and a parking lot across the street for hikers...going north from there is probably a better bet than south...just my $.02....so again just keep posting the details...

I thought we were going to meet in the parking lot of an inn across the road from the Turnpike entrance at 10 a.m.

stratusloop, I will email my cell phone number to you. I drive a gray 1983 Toyota Cressida, and Maple drives a dinky little station wagon with NY tags, I think.

The only fly in the ointment would be if the trail is icy. I'm not going to risk it if it is.

Maple's car is dinky. Maple is an EMT call looking for a location.

There is supposed to be more snow and rain on Friday. It is not improbable that it could be ice and snow up there. If we decide to bag that idea, there is always the canal for a nice stroll. Or we could stop in a restaurant somewhere and drive the wait staff crazy.
