Riots
Did anyone see the riot scene on the news tonight in Columbus, Ohio? 100 fires, broken windows and cars flipped over. They said it was a combination of alcohol and joy of winning that caused people to do this. Violence broke out in Hawaii and Pullman, Washington too over football games. It just doesn't make any sense.

Today's kids are just the type of punks to pull stuff like this. No rules when they're growing up....

Geo, it reminded me of a soccer game in England when the people went crazy there.

It's a strange bit of group dynamics. This seems to happen everywhere in certain situations. And I don't think it's a modern thing. Lynchings, mob actions and execution parties have been around since the beginning of the country.

the riots were actually over a scott baio poster signing, by a bunch of horny teen women. Nothing to do with football.

It kind of casts a pall over the whole football thing. This season will forever be known as the riot year. Too bad for the OSU fans.

The mayor of Columbus, Ohio said the riots gave the city a black eye. It did look like an ugly scene.

This scene is happening more often...mob mentality.

Having been up close and personal at a couple of these things (last Rutgers/Princeton game and Mets playoffs in 1986?) I can say it is a very primal reaction. Mob mentality and alcohol are a dangerous combination.

I wonder if we could ever have a "TT Riot" where we tip over our computers and burn the monitors?

Rioting OSU fans are an embarrassment to the city of Columbus. My family is from there and my little brother actually lived close to the riot area.

I'm just glad I don't live there any more.

I think George Dubya is developing an outlet for young adults with a penchant for gathering in large numbers and incinerating mechanical devices -- and it even includes wearing matching uniforms and helmets!

It would be nice if we could hold a riot here in Philly to celebrate a championship. The problem is, nobody in Philly knows quite how to conduct themselves when somebody does win a championship.

Everybody pretty much stands around scratching their heads asking each other, "Can this be true?"

"Oh, it's true alright. Hey, aren't we supposed to be burning something?"

"Well I don't know. Besides, I didn't bring matches to the game. How was I to know?"

"Yeah, you'd think they would have printed something in the Inky."

None dead in O-HI-O!
There is a song in there somewhere.

When the Phillies won, a trolley was tipped over in Chestnut Hill. (quite the upper-crusty neighborhood, in Philly. Maybe the perps recalled the glory days of winning the cup at the cricket club, or the Inter-ac championship in squash.)

C'mon Limpy, you can't compare a little trolley tipping with a full-blown riot. That just proves what I was trying to say: Philly fans don't know squat about rioting to celebrate a championship, or in this case just playing in the championship game. We have no clue how to act.

"Hey, I know, let's tip a trolley."

"I dunno, is that what you're supposed to do?"

"How should I know? I wasn't around when the A's won the series!"

Philly folks know how to riot after a concert though. I was at Veteran’s Stadium to see Pink Floyd. Security thought it would be a good idea to make everyone from the field walk a circuitous route up into the stands before exiting. A few people started rocking the 12' high fence they put up and the crowd started chanting "TEAR DOWN THE WALL... TEAR DOWN THE WALL" Security wisely stepped outta the way as hundreds of people joined to toss that thing over.

I'm surprised the riots in L.A. this weekend haven't gotten much press.

After USC routed UCLA it was a madhouse! People were going insane. There was brie and shrimp cocktail littering the streets of Brentwood... THE HORROR

Hockey or Football
About 10 years ago, the Montreal Canadians won the Stanley Cup...we had a riot. After work (1am) I went downtown to check it out.

This year, we (Montreal Alouettes) won the Grey Cup but we didn't have a riot. Maybe the citizens are more behaved, or because the game was played in Edmonton, Alberta.

Whatever, riots suck, makes the city look bad.

The were celebrating that peaceful and wonderful role model onetime Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes. He would have approved.

Used to be when Les Habs won the Stanley Cup the fans shrugged their shoulders, drank down the last of their Molson, and went home peacefully. Those were some great teams. It was like a hockey clinic watching them play.

Now if Les Expos won the World Series, the six fans at Le Stade Olympique would rush outside and burn a paper cup.

I have no idea strat, I've never been there, so I don't even know if it exists. I did fly over it, but from 30,000 feet I could not tell whether there was anybody down there or not.
