Dang Earthquakes!View Messages“OK, I've had enough. There have been over 50 small earthquakes centered about 15 miles from my house over the past 36 hours, with 4 of them registering over 3.0 in magnitude. We felt the second one the night before last, and my wife insisted I put a pair of shoes and a jacket out in case we had to evacuate in the middle of the night. Nothing happened, of course. Last night, we joked with my cousing, who was staying overnight with us, that there could be an earthquake, since there had been a bunch of other ones. Sure enough, at 4:40 this morning, another one hit - this one at magnitude 3.7. The cat went flying off the bed, and of course, I couldn't get back to sleep. HEY EARTH!! JUST GIVE US A BIG ONE AND GET IT OVER WITH!! Then maybe I can get some sleep.... USGS Recent Earthquakes near SF” 8:58:46 AM 11/26/02 “Oops. Should say "the past 72 hours," not 36....” 8:59:49 AM 11/26/02 “"cousin" not "cousing" see what they're doing to me?” 9:00:26 AM 11/26/02 “M-M-M-M-eow?” 9:01:30 AM 11/26/02 Relocation,Relocation,Relocation “If you want it I have a number to a reliable moving company” 9:06:15 AM 11/26/02 “Despite my complaints, I'll take earthquakes over tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, snow, etc. But thanks for the offer!” 9:10:23 AM 11/26/02 “I think everybody's like that. I live in a high tornado area, compared with most of the rest of the country. But they don't really bother me that much, when the siren goes off, I take the kids down into the basement, and wait for it to be over. It happens about 2-3 times a year. But this area is also filled with people who come from someplace else, usually someplace where there aren't any tornadoes. The local news media latched on to that about 10 years ago, so now if there is sever weather anywhere within about 100 miles of here, they go to fulltime coverage of that storm until the front passes out of their extended coverage area. It's hilarious. On the other hand, I'd just as soon not live someplace where the ground shakes underneath me on a regular basis.” 9:15:23 AM 11/26/02 “Aren't cats suppose to senses those things coming? So like when you see your cat hanging from the ceiling you should go for cover or something??” 9:16:10 AM 11/26/02 “Hey, wait just a minute!! When the 'Big One' nails Frisco, Reno is going to get all shook up too. We always feel the vetiges of the earthquakes over about 6.0. Read my lips, no new earthquakes.” 9:17:00 AM 11/26/02 “vetiges=vestiges” 9:17:46 AM 11/26/02 “vetiges=vestiges” 9:17:46 AM 11/26/02 “Briar, MrHyde is coming up on 16 years old. Whatever ability he ever had to predict earthquakes is long gone. He mostly gets annoyed by them now, since they interrupt his sleep time.” 9:20:15 AM 11/26/02 “Zzzzzzzzzzzzz......” 9:20:45 AM 11/26/02 “Marty, you should come back to Montana where it's safe (except for that volcano lurking over at Yellowstone)” 9:24:04 AM 11/26/02 “Not to make matters worse, but I heard that the San Andres fault is due for a really big one. PLease be careful!” 9:29:40 AM 11/26/02 “Look at the bright side martyb- in a few years you might be closer to Alaska!” 9:31:43 AM 11/26/02 “Sorry aero, but I'm on the North American Plate. It's the folks on the Pacific Plate that might be in Alaska in a few years!” 9:44:02 AM 11/26/02 “Good to see so many of you are up on your tectonic science!” 9:56:18 AM 11/26/02 “Hey, 2 more at 8:08 and 8:09, magnitude 2.4 and 1.6, respectively. Didn't feel either. Now up to 62 for this swarm.” 10:15:05 AM 11/26/02 “get use to it” 10:18:52 AM 11/26/02 “Hurricanes aren't that bad. At least you can see them coming so far in advance you can get out of the way. Only total idiots get killed in Hurricanes. There is a reason why they are called mandatory evacuations.” 10:22:35 AM 11/26/02 “Same thing in Maine bitpusher, so many people here from away that everytime we get a dusting of snow, it turns into a big media event. People clean out the shelves of bottled water every time we get a couple inches. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so stupid!” 10:22:51 AM 11/26/02 “So far, for the ones greater than 3.5 magnitude, the second one occurred 13 hours after the first one; the third one 14 hours after that; the fourth one 18 hours after that. So, the average is 15 hours between 3.5+'s, making the next one due at about 8:00 tonight. Or if you look at the increasing trend of time between quakes, we should get the next 3.5+ one at about 5 or 6 tomorrow morning.” 10:25:54 AM 11/26/02 “Having spent 18 months living above a diving plate (the Philippines), I can say with certainty I would not want to live on a plate boundary again. I went through three minor quakes there. Ground seemed like Jello for weeks after.” 10:27:17 AM 11/26/02 “We get the snow thing too. When they forecast snow here, people go en masse to the grocery store and strip the shelves clean of milk and bread. What makes it even funnier is that snow rarely lasts for more than a day or two. It's Alabama, for Pete's sake! I dunno about you, but I have more than two days' food in my house usually. Even if I'm out of bread and milk, I could get by.” 10:27:58 AM 11/26/02 “Can't imagine setting your clock by earthquakes!” 10:30:40 AM 11/26/02 “3 more little 'uns in the last 40 minutes, all around magnitude 2. Up to 65 now....” 11:17:30 AM 11/26/02 “66 and 67 5 minutes ago. Isn't this fun?!” 11:24:38 AM 11/26/02 “I always heard that it's when you don't get the little ones for a while you should begin to worry. Of course if you're near a volcano, you might want to revise that... Hey, isn't Yellowstone just One Big Caldera?” 11:34:00 AM 11/26/02 “Marty, certain members of my family are "end of the world as we know it, it's the end of the world as we know it" types and they always think things like your earthquake build-up are signs of the impending doom. I kinda' take an easy-does-it approachto the whole apocalypes thing, they already took care of the bunker and supplies. Newergirl and I should be able to ride it out just fine. BTW, Aero, those same family members try to convince of the impending doom of the Yellowstone volcano all the time. "It'll be like 3 nuclear blasts when it goes!" LOL! (I spit in the eye of paranoia and fear!)” 11:35:17 AM 11/26/02 “And which family members might those be, ng????? You don't have to answer - I think I know....” 11:40:58 AM 11/26/02 “So what does one feel like???? I herd that it can feel like being in a water bed or something? 8)” 11:42:18 AM 11/26/02 “sounds ominous...i remember here in LA in 94 we had swarms of small quake/tremblors a week prior to the BIG ONE(6.8). I think we are overdue in SF and LA for some action. Its been real quiet here since 94...Good Luck-ya.i'll take quakes over crap weather any day...” 11:42:23 AM 11/26/02 “CM, we had a little one here in Alabama, a 3.9 about 35 miles from where I live, and I thought someone was running down the hall upstairs in my house. That's been my only experience with earthquakes.” 11:46:35 AM 11/26/02 “...and thats not the worst of it. After you survive, you need to protect yourself and loved ones from the maurauding hordes who didn't make provisions.” 11:49:12 AM 11/26/02 “I chortle at the thought of impending doom.” 11:50:49 AM 11/26/02 “Yeah, Marty, I'm sure you can narrow it down pretty easy. They are the same family members who are also ready to handle the marauding hordes that Limpy mentioned.” 11:56:51 AM 11/26/02 “They're actually expecting the hordes to make it as far as Montana? Most of them will be buzzard bait long before they get there...” 12:03:09 PM 11/26/02 “Limpy, you also made a good point about that not being "the worst of it." Why, why in the heck, would you want to survive? It will suck. Marty, I'm not saying that you shouldn't try and survive a major quake. I was refering to the apocalypes, k. LOL!” 12:03:37 PM 11/26/02 “RAY I remember Revelation 7:12. And I looked, as he opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became as black as sackcloth. And the moon became as blood. WINSTON And the seas boiled and the skies fell. RAY Judgment Day. WINSTON Judgment Day. Limpy Judgment Day.” 12:04:13 PM 11/26/02 “Yeah, Judgement Day. Damn. We better watch for the other signs. Turn on CNN and I bet you can catch about 4 other signs in about 5 mins. Skeery!” 12:07:25 PM 11/26/02 “CMB, Earthquakes feel different, depending on many factors. If it's a pretty strong one, you can feel both the "p-waves" and "s-waves" (for "primary" and "secondary" I believe). The p-wave feels like a truck just backed into your house (sharp jolt), while the s-wave is the rolling action. Sometimes you miss the p-wave and just feel the rolling. The recent ones we had here, we just felt the p, but not the s. In '89, I was relatively close to the center of that one, so, even while driving, I felt some very strong ground accelerations (from p-waves, I figure), but not the rolling of the s-waves.” 12:30:16 PM 11/26/02 “Dang Marty, do all you Calfornians know this much about it?” 12:32:17 PM 11/26/02 “Not too worried about an apocalypse, ng. I figure I'm more likely to get killed in a car wreck than by somethin' like that. Also, why worry about the marauding hordes. Just be one of them!” 12:33:07 PM 11/26/02 “ng, you do if you're a licensed civil engineer....” 12:33:41 PM 11/26/02 “Of course, I could probably just make this stuff up. Who could tell?” 12:34:37 PM 11/26/02 “Ooooooooh, that explains it. I was in a small one in LA (Costa Mesa) in '97 around X-mas. I think it was a 4.0 or something. I think I felt the p-wave stuff. I described it to my mom exactly like you said, "I thought there was a huge truck hitting the apartment Mom!" After that it just kinda' rolled for a min. and we all (had hangovers) went back to bed.” 12:37:41 PM 11/26/02 “10 more in the past few hours, including a 3.3 - woo hoo! Up to 77 quakes now since Sunday morning....” 2:24:27 PM 11/26/02 “Come over baby whole lot of shakin' goin' on Yes I said come over baby baby you can't go wrong We ain't faken it Whole lot of shakin' goin' on Well I said come over baby we got chicken in the boarder Come over baby baby got move a little harder We ain't faken it Whole lot of shakin' goin' on Well I said shake baby shake I said shake baby shake I said shake it baby shake it I said shake baby shake Come on over Whole lot of shakin goin' on Well I said come over baby we got chicken in the Barn whose barn what barn my barn Come over baby better got to move along We ain't fake it Whole lot of shakin' goin' on” 3:10:26 PM 11/26/02 “Gives a whole new meaning to that "If the van's a-rockin', don't come a'knockin'" thing...” 3:13:41 PM 11/26/02
