Dang Earthquakes!

“OK, I've had enough. There have been over 50 small earthquakes centered about 15 miles from my house over the past 36 hours, with 4 of them registering over 3.0 in magnitude. We felt the second one the night before last, and my wife insisted I put a pair of shoes and a jacket out in case we had to evacuate in the middle of the night. Nothing happened, of course.

Last night, we joked with my cousing, who was staying overnight with us, that there could be an earthquake, since there had been a bunch of other ones. Sure enough, at 4:40 this morning, another one hit - this one at magnitude 3.7. The cat went flying off the bed, and of course, I couldn't get back to sleep.

HEY EARTH!! JUST GIVE US A BIG ONE AND GET IT OVER WITH!!

Then maybe I can get some sleep....

“I think everybody's like that. I live in a high tornado area, compared with most of the rest of the country. But they don't really bother me that much, when the siren goes off, I take the kids down into the basement, and wait for it to be over. It happens about 2-3 times a year. But this area is also filled with people who come from someplace else, usually someplace where there aren't any tornadoes. The local news media latched on to that about 10 years ago, so now if there is sever weather anywhere within about 100 miles of here, they go to fulltime coverage of that storm until the front passes out of their extended coverage area. It's hilarious.

On the other hand, I'd just as soon not live someplace where the ground shakes underneath me on a regular basis.”

“So far, for the ones greater than 3.5 magnitude, the second one occurred 13 hours after the first one; the third one 14 hours after that; the fourth one 18 hours after that. So, the average is 15 hours between 3.5+'s, making the next one due at about 8:00 tonight. Or if you look at the increasing trend of time between quakes, we should get the next 3.5+ one at about 5 or 6 tomorrow morning.”

“Having spent 18 months living above a diving plate (the Philippines), I can say with certainty I would not want to live on a plate boundary again. I went through three minor quakes there. Ground seemed like Jello for weeks after.”

“We get the snow thing too. When they forecast snow here, people go en masse to the grocery store and strip the shelves clean of milk and bread. What makes it even funnier is that snow rarely lasts for more than a day or two. It's Alabama, for Pete's sake! I dunno about you, but I have more than two days' food in my house usually. Even if I'm out of bread and milk, I could get by.”

“Marty, certain members of my family are "end of the world as we know it, it's the end of the world as we know it" types and they always think things like your earthquake build-up are signs of the impending doom. I kinda' take an easy-does-it approachto the whole apocalypes thing, they already took care of the bunker and supplies. Newergirl and I should be able to ride it out just fine. BTW, Aero, those same family members try to convince of the impending doom of the Yellowstone volcano all the time. "It'll be like 3 nuclear blasts when it goes!" LOL! (I spit in the eye of paranoia and fear!)”

“sounds ominous...i remember here in LA in 94 we had swarms of small quake/tremblors a week prior to the BIG ONE(6.8).
I think we are overdue in SF and LA for some action.Its been real quiet here since 94...Good Luck-ya.i'll take quakes over crap weather any day...”

“CM, we had a little one here in Alabama, a 3.9 about 35 miles from where I live, and I thought someone was running down the hall upstairs in my house. That's been my only experience with earthquakes.”

Earthquakes feel different, depending on many factors. If it's a pretty strong one, you can feel both the "p-waves" and "s-waves" (for "primary" and "secondary" I believe). The p-wave feels like a truck just backed into your house (sharp jolt), while the s-wave is the rolling action. Sometimes you miss the p-wave and just feel the rolling. The recent ones we had here, we just felt the p, but not the s. In '89, I was relatively close to the center of that one, so, even while driving, I felt some very strong ground accelerations (from p-waves, I figure), but not the rolling of the s-waves.”

“Ooooooooh, that explains it. I was in a small one in LA (Costa Mesa) in '97 around X-mas. I think it was a 4.0 or something. I think I felt the p-wave stuff. I described it to my mom exactly like you said, "I thought there was a huge truck hitting the apartment Mom!" After that it just kinda' rolled for a min. and we all (had hangovers) went back to bed.”
