“for his birthday/Christmas. he is 11. i got my first 20 ga when i was 10. it's jsut a "new england" brand from walmart. only costed $88. i got him a case and a box of shells and a butt cushion, cuz it will kick like a mule. it a single shot and is very light. i'm gonna surprize him with it tomorrow at my sisters. we always shoot guns out there because it's out in the country.”

i will teach him very well, as my dad did me. this boy is one of the best kids i've ever known. makes straight a's. plays baseball, football, basketball, loves to hike and fish. he is very kind hearted and nice and polite and funny and i am very very proud and fortunate to be his father. he would never shoot another human by accident. he is very intelligent and stable and i trust his judgement, otherwise i would never give him a gun. it will be locked up(trigger lock came with it) and only i will have the key. he will only use it if he's hunting or target shooting with me. i shot 300 doves before i was 12. never hit one single human in all those shots.....



incendently, i bought this gun tonight at walmart. i went in ans said i want to buy a gun, and in 30 minutes i walked out with it, and ammo. they calle din my name, and i guess it cleared(i can't believe they din't hear bout the donkey incodent in madamores). my point is, i though there was s'posed to be a 7 day waiting period. WTF?”

BTW- Most scout summer camps offer hunter safety courses led by certified NRA trainers for signifigantly less cost than anywhere else. If you attend camp too you can do a refresher with him and make it a father son thing.”

“I, too, was taught just as you... but, something else I was taught.... NEVER shoot any living thing you are not going to eat. Now, tell me.... just how many of those 300 doves did you actually EAT? Did you just kill for the sake of killing? What other wildlife did you kill or mame just for the thrill of shooting them????
If you REALLY want to teach this young man firearm responsibility, do as my dad did. If you kill it, you eat it. Simple as that. Target and tincan shooting is a blast. I have many guns in my home and not one will be used to just to go out shooting wildlife just to see it fall from the sky or lay bleeding to death on the ground. Teach him the laws of nature... kill for food only and to respect all wildlife and the enviornment.

“My daughter and my son each got a .280 caliber Remington 700 bolt action rifle for deer hunting when they turned 13. Each completed a hunter saftey course. My son has won awards at two different summer camps for marksmanship. My daughter can shoot a 1.5 inch circle at 100 yards. My deed of gift for the hunting rifles are that the rifles stay locked up in MY vault, which they have no access to, unless they are in the act of hunting or target practising, and they don't get to keep the rifles themselves until they turn 25. We eat everything we shoot. Each of my children are quite satisfied with the arrangement.”

I think giving kids a responsible exposure to gun safety is a good preventative measure. My son has always loved guns and started collecting them when could afford it.

He just won a Springfield XD-40 in a steel target shooting tournament. He did well and was totally stoked. He had to wait 10 days to pick it up. I went and watched part of the tournament. It looked like so much fun I think I'll try it next time around.

He worked for 3 years at an indoor shooting range and so he is extremely well versed on guns and safety.

You can also buy other barrels for the NEF shotgun. Ours has 12, 20, & .410 barrels. If you can't find them at the local pawn or gunshops, or maybe gun show, you can send the receiver to NEF, and they will fit one there. Sorry, but I can't quote you a price, as I did this about 10-15 years ago.”

“I was handed my first piece of weaponry when I was only 10 years old. I was a little terrorist. I shot everything that walked or crawled with my Arkansas Can Opener, (.22 Cal Pellet Rifle) including my brother. I had to bribe him to keep him from telling mom and dad. Over the years I gradumicated to larger more powerful firearms and continued to kill and maim God's small and defenseless creatures. Although I never did take another shot at my brother.”

phil, that does sound like fun. and you were right, the boy loved it! he shot it about 8 times i think. put the hurt on some old buckets and plastic soda bottles. i taught him all about it and we locked it up before putting in the case. he was very proud of it.

trekker john, i ate every single fawking one of them. why would you assume otherwise? we belonged to a large informal hunting club and they had huge dove dinners on fri and sat nights. they had these gigantic iron kettles and would fry 30 or 40 at a time. it was around jonesburo AR, and we hunted in soybean fields. everybody pitched in their doves for the dove-fry. and we would bring some home with us also, and freeze them and eat them later. BEEEOTCH!

“One of my colleagues is fairly well off financially and usually goes on a hunting safari somewhere in the world during the summer. It is not my "cup of tea", but it is interesting to hear about it.

To his credit, he does support the local people whereever he goes. All the meat goes to poor people and then he has his trophies mounted there and shipped home. Apparently, many African countries depend on hunters for much of their economy. The daily cost for guides, etc., plus permits for each animal killed really add up. The tag for one large animal he shot cost $10,000...and he said it was cheaper than most countries.”

“During the three years my son worked at the shooting range, he introduced many people (friends and/or customers) to target shooting that had never touched a firearm before. In every case it was a very positive experience for them. My wife was one of them. My son says she is a pretty good shot.”

Getting ready for our new New Year's Day observance -- going to the target range. Last year, no one there but us. The range is very different when draped in snow, and it's more fun than watching a parade on TV!”
