The newest SUV contraversy
On a recent conservative radio talk show, conservatives were left speachless as they stumbbled around for an arguement against the idea that Jesus would not drive an SUV. A clash of values was obvious as conservatives love SUVs and Christianity. We will now see which is more important... OIL or GOD
SUV's or God's Creation

LOL

Why don't you people leave your liberal B.S off here. Liberals using Jesus to make their point. Now that's a joke.

I didn't say I supported this spin, just thought it was funny...

Seriously though, don't you think SUVs are immoral? I mean, they really are a bit excessive when most people use them as grocery getters and for their every-day commute.

Liberals want everybody to stay out of their personal business, but want to impose their beliefs on others. I drive an SUV and don't really care if it bother anyone. I don't try to tell liberals how to live their lives or what to drive.

I don't care what you drive, the question was, what would Jesus drive?

He would probably take the bus or walk. These guys like Al gore don't drive hybrids or anything. You see them in big SUV's.

I don't know Jesus could possibly drive a SUV...he would have to get all the disciples around to their destinations!

I am laughing at this question...isn't there more important issues to think about rather than what Jesus would drive?

I believe the Bible states/infers that Jesus' disciples were "all in one accord". So Jesus must have been in there with 'em! :^)

Conservative/religious pundit George Will was even more contorted than usual over this issue.

He managed to point out the great results that environmentalism had produced over the last 30 years in the same column that he derided it as an attempt to make everyone dependent on government.

This issue should get them totally psychotic.

As I recall he drove a Colt on Palm Sunday.

Jesus didn't have a driver's license, so it is a moot arguement anyway.

Seriously, our liberal news media knows so little about Christian theology they love to jump on stories like this and watch the feeding frenzy. Why not ask something really important like, "Where will you spend eternity?" Jesus talked a lot about that!

Phil – Don’t you think that there is some stewardship implied in our “dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”?

BTW – my SUV that holds 7 passengers gets 50% better mileage than a 1972 station wagon and pollutes a whole lot less.

A 50% improvement in 30 years? Yeah, we've made such great leaps and bounds...

I would walk/ride my bike/ride the bus if there were infrastructure for it here that would support it. There isn't. Therefore I drive. I can't wait for the Ford Excape HEV to come out next fall. Forty mpg hwy, 29 mpg city ain't nuttin' to sneeze at.

there were no cars during that time period so i guess that answers that question...and like violin said..SUV's don't pollute more...if you think of it like this

Yeah, and of course, the SUV's are always completely loaded, every time they go anywhere, right?

Jesus, by the way, was a liberal.

I drive an economical car on my commute. I wish I had mass transit available but only because I resent the public’s emancipation from dependence on government, not because I don’t like spending hours in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

We have three kids. My wife needs a large enough vehicle to cart them (and sometimes their friends) around. I often use it to carry stuff home from Home Depot. It’s not always fully loaded, but are we doomed to go to hell because we can’t afford a different vehicle for every possible use?

More ramblings...
Violin - No argument with your comment toward "dominion over the earth..." My remark was a snipe at the mainstream media which majors in trivia and doesn't have a clue when it comes to mainstream Christianity. As I have mentioned on other threads, I believe that massive implementation of ISO-14000 would do two things:

1. Clean up the environment and reduce pollution many times more than the EPA ever could or that Congress ever would.

2. Save companies LOTS of money by reducing waste and non-value added steps in their operations.

Phaedrus - I doubt Jesus would line up too well with "today's" liberals w.r.t. abortion, gay marriages, victimless crimes, and the "current" stance on separation of church and state. He criticized the leaders ("Pharisees") the most. He associated with "sinners" quite a bit (e.g., tax collectors prostitutes, etc.) and tried to get them to change their ways. I am not sure I could attribute that to any particular side of the house today.
Phil

I think Jesus would drive his SUV to take a liberal to the abortion clinic.

I think that is a gross over characterization.

If I wanted to argue a direct point against that, I would launch into a dialogue about Roe v. Wade, which could arguably be a direct point against such statement.

I find it unbelievably ironic that the Christian Right consistently opposes increases to the minimum wage. After all, these aren't the prostitutes and crack dealers; these are the folks who are trying to make an honest living.

Oh, that's right... it's cheaper for the companies who employ those people to fund studies, make capaign contributions and hire lobbyists (i.e. recently FIRED politicians).

WWJD?
Ima gonna get me one'a them rings for my fat little pinky, which will stand for this: What Would Jason Do? Hehe, thank I'm jokin' don't ya?

Lordy, shall I wade into the fecal fray?? I hafta sometimes giggle at those naive enough to thank this ole planet will continually support the most advanced animal it's ever seen. Not gonna happen, simple as that. Yeah we're gonna make incredible breakthru's and such. But good grief, we ain't gonna outgenius prosperity, or humpfest, or the global production giant. Now lookit me, I'm concerned about the environment, it's my #1 concern, and as such is really about the only thing I regularly donate $$ to. But Violin and Phaedrus, I have an SUV and an 'evil' minivan, and I don't give a flip what anyone else says, I will absolutely not give them up, period. I love this planet, but I ain't about to give up disposeable diapers, which are landfills' #1 or #2 filler. And I am one of many, many millions of Americans who are not gonna give up their cars or their landfill supplies. We have numerous wonderful centuries a'comin. But not many, the planet cain't supply us with many. For those who thank future technologies and advancements in science will save us from ourselves, I do believe have an unrealistic view of human nature, a Walt Disney Complex ya might call it. What, by 2040, we're predicted to be a world pop of 12 billion? Hey the USofA is in a big hurry to pump out babies nearly as fast as the rest of the world ..... lotta cars to be sold to'em over the next 40-odd years, polluting cars, even if they're polluting just a little bit. Oh yeah, don't forget all the forests being hacked down 'cause peasants gotta eat, sleep, and reproduce too yaknow! We cannot keep it up.

I'm curious to know whut kinda bunk ya thank these thoughts are. Yeah I'm fatalistic about what the world will bring for humans (heck all major life forms on the planet for that matter), but I'm very comfortable with it, quite happy. I'm not depressed about it, or saddened about the misery of my familial lineage 30 or 40 or 50 generations out. And I'm not a Star Trekker type of person, meaning that I don't thank that we'll escape into the universe and populate other planets. Maybe a little bit, but not enough to successfully propagate our numbers more than a few centuries.

Deep poop! I wonder if I should just delete all this crap and git in da bed where I should be?!

Anyway,jgeils... Your remark about liberals using Jesus to make a point is part of the typical right wing conceit that they own Jesus. In other places and times, people thought Jesus was a socialist.

Personally, I think that a lot of liberal sentiments come pretty close to the Jesus described in the Bible. Where most liberals differ is that they want government (and thus the coercive power of the state) to implement these sentiments.
