Light Compact Food “Robert and I are going on a Nankoweap hike. Our permit is for seven nights so we need 8+ days of food. Room in the packs and weight are considerations. I loaned out my ti zip stove and if I can't get it back then fuel will be a consideration too. We should have some trout to eat as Robert will be fishing. I would appreciate responses from some of you that have been out for that long. What things did you come up with that were light and compact. THX in advance--Mary” 10:34:00 AM 11/30/02 Good & Filling “Take stove top stuffing.Buy the premixed kind and put in baggies. It really makes a good hot meal. They also make ckicken now that comes vacumed sealed. It's by the tuna or canned chicken. Mix chicken and stuffing together and you got yourself a little treat. HAPPY TRAILS” 1:21:28 PM 11/30/02 “It you want some gravy with your chicken and dressing, grocery stores carry various gravy mixes--I'm not sure of the exact name, but it's something like "Hunter's stew/gravey mix" where you just add water. You can make separately or add just a bit to your dressing. Variation on a recipe "Thanksgiving on the Trail" I found somewhere.” 3:36:35 PM 11/30/02 A couple of my favorites “In addition to the normal home-grown / home-dehydrated offerings, are Packlite foods, they have some pretty good stuff, http://www.packlitefoods.com/menu.htm I thought that I was almost alone until this came up in a thread last week and a couple other tt'rs joined in, but I also really like Enertia foods, they're at http://www.trailfoods.com/index.html” 4:20:33 PM 11/30/02 “Thanks all--do you remember the name of that thread wanderer? Might there be another thread on dehydrating ideas?” 4:56:28 PM 11/30/02 “Can't remember off-hand (I'm OLD, MaryPhyl!), but, there is usually some good info here http://www.backpacking.net/bbs.html Search the lite food forum, and if you have time hit the archives.” 6:53:25 PM 11/30/02 “Just remember, MP... "if the fish don't bite, neither will you," <VBG>” 7:03:08 PM 11/30/02 “I agree w/ wanderer. The Enertia foods are excellent. They taste great and are pretty light weight. They sell a sampler pack so you can test several meals. Oh, and the prices are right, too. 3.75 per dinner, I believe.” 9:10:10 PM 11/30/02 “Enertia foods rock!” 9:37:14 PM 11/30/02 “I think Barb sells them--I will give her a call. She left one of those GC cheesecakes here last summer and we ate it not long ago. 'twas nummy.” 12:25:10 AM 12/01/02 “Bear creek makes a decent dry chilly mix but ya have to pack small can of paste with it, 1 bag will easily feed two hungry hikers tho....” 2:52:57 AM 12/01/02 “Tou can purchase tomato powder to replace the paste at Enertia's site. Just mix it up with a bit less water than called for. Last eight day trip I went on, we ate alot of lipton noodles and Lipton rice. I like the enertia meals alot better!!!! Highly recommend the chowder, Raineer rice, and the cheesecake!” 8:07:48 PM 12/01/02 “well tou? are ya gonna get me some or not?.... thanks sass..” 3:36:59 AM 12/02/02 “I bought the chili and I already own the tomato powder. Thanks again.” 5:24:32 PM 12/02/02
